Overview

Santillana del Mar Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Large 2 bedroom apartment sleeping up to 6 & studio apartment sleeping up to 5

Our fully renovated farmhouse is over 100 years old and is located on the unspoilt coastline of Cantabria in the north of Spain. We reside on over 13 acres of farmland and enjoy uninterrupted views of the Cantabrian sea and surrounding countryside. We’re within easy walking distance of the medieval town of Santillana del Mar and we’re only a 10 minute drive to the nearest family beach.

We're a young(ish) family of four, originally from Reading, England. We also live full time at the property and we're always happy to offer help and advice during your stay whilst, at the same time, respecting your privacy. Please take time to read our reviews below as we try to offer a little more than just a roof over your head!!

The Spanish provinces of Cantabria and Asturias together form a large part of the area known as Green Spain, a region far removed from the frantic activity of Spain's southern resorts it's easy to imagine that you're in an entirely different country. This is a traditional, still largely undiscovered part of Spain where the countryside and coast combine to reward visitors with a truly unforgettable experience.

There is no doubt that Santillana del Mar is one of the most perfectly preserved medieval villages anywhere in Spain and even Europe. To wander its network of cobbled streets and alleys lined with ancient stone houses has often been likened to entering a living museum. Visitors can easily become totally immersed in the atmosphere of centuries of history.

Just over a mile from us you'll find the Altamira Cave. Famous for its prehistoric paintings of boars, bison and deer dating from the end of the Ice Age the cave has become known as the Sistine Chapel of prehistoric art. Although the cave itself is closed to the public a museum adjoining the site has an exact recreation of the paintings using the very same basic materials and rock structure. It really is worth a visit.

All around us you'll find some of the most spectacularly beautiful countryside imaginable. Lush green valleys and forests, sleepy villages have changed little in centuries. Venture just a few miles and you'll quickly find the majestic Picos de Europa mountains rising to over 8,000 feet. Located in wonderful natural surroundings the cable car at Fuente Dé rises from 1094m to 1847m. At the top you can admire one of the most outstanding views of the Picos de Europa mountain range. Once there you can also trek back down, have a picnic, or just enjoy the view. All this combines to produce a landscape that will literally take your breath away.

Within a few miles you'll find a wonderful Safari Park you can visit by car or on foot. At the Parque de la Naturaleza de Cabárceno you'll find, in partial freedom, animals from all over the world. Between trees and cliffs you can admire a collection including bears, lions, tigers, wolves, elephants, gorillas and camels. The bird show is truly unmissable.

Whatever your level Cantabria offers a wide range of walking and cycling. For those in search of steep trails and wild off-road routes the Picos de Europa mountain range is only an hour away. Local to us you will find traffic free trails suitable for all ages and abilities. We can provide a safe place for your bike, cleaning facilities, general tools and, for adventurous couples, a Cannondale tandem to explore with.

The two major cities along the Cantabrian and Asturias coast line are stylish Santander and historical Gijon. In between them you'll find just about everything a holidaymaker could desire, from a rich cultural heritage, sporting facilities, nightlife, entertainment galore and fine dining. Fresh seafood (including locally caught lobster and clams) is prominent on local menus and there are some exceptional dining spots to be found locally.

Cantabria and Asturias share a coastline of approximately 200 miles, along which you'll discover any number of colourful fishing villages and gorgeous sandy beaches blissfully free of crowds. One of our nearest beaches, Playa del Luaña in Cobreces, is only a quick 10 minute drive away. It is suitable for all ages as it has a shallow fresh water river running into the sea. Whilst the older kids enjoy the surf the younger children can have as much fun paddling up to their knees in the river.

Getting here really couldn't be easier. We're only a quick 30 minute drive from Santander airport and ferry port. Bilbao airport and ferry port is also within easy reach. Ryanair provide cheap daily flights from Stanstead to Santander. Easyjet also fly daily from Stanstead to Bilbao. Car hire is provided at both airports. If you wish to bring your own car (or hate flying) Brittany Ferries sail from Portsmouth and Plymouth to Santander and Bilbao.

If you’re considering a more permanent move to Northern Spain we can provide a translation service and advice about such things as residency, employment, property purchase, health care, etc. We can also help by providing introductions to local, English speaking builders, architects, estate agents, independent solicitors and council representatives. Please e-mail or phone for further details.

For those wishing to improve their Spanish we can also organise private tuition for all ages.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I recently spent a few weeks in an apartment in el chaparral, and would highly recommend this location, not only for the delightful property, but also the surrounding, beautiful countryside. The apartment was warm and comfortable and equipped with just about everything to make for a very pleasant experience. The kitchen was very well equipped too, and anything extra which was needed, the host owners were more than happy to provide. There are delightful walks, spectacular views across the hills and countryside to the sea. The very popular village of Santillana is gorgeous. It has just about everything one would need. The village is only a short rural and attractive walk from the property. All in all, a very pleasant experience thanks to the friendly and welcoming owners.

Excellent comfortable family apartment

  • 5 of 5
As we are a family of 5 we stayed in apartment 1 and it suited us well. The layout was good with a double bedroom a second bedroom with a bunk bed and a single bed. The living space had room for relaxing and also eating indoors if we wanted to. Actually we most often chose to eat outside to enjoy the stunning view down to the sea.

The kitchen area was well equipped for self-catering and it was great to have a washing machine as we could pack less, fly with a budget airline and wash clothes as we needed to during our two week stay.

The apartment is well located for the beach; in fact the local beach was so lovely we never looked for another one nearby. It was a bonus to be able to borrow boogie boards from Rob and Becky who own the apartment, as our boys found the waves great for surfing and we could not have fitted body boards in our luggage.

Our 3 boys, aged 9, 7 and 5, enjoyed using the play equipment in the garden most evenings. The trampoline, basketball hoop and table tennis kept them entertained, and they especially enjoyed getting to know the 9 year old son of the owners. Rob and Becky were on site in their own house and therefore around to give advice on local museums, such as the days for free entry, or what places were good to visit. We found this really helpful and it saved a lot of tourist information centre visiting.

During our stay we visited the local town, travelled further afield to the Picos de Europa and into Asturias for canoeing on a river and we enjoyed exploring the Jurassic coast too. We found the apartment comfortable and well located for a family holiday in Northern Spain. It was made even better by Rob and Becky's welcoming and relaxed approach. I would definitely recommend a stay here for a family. We are considering visiting again another time.

Perfect Introduction to Cantabria

  • 5 of 5
Though a tad difficult to find the effort was well woth it. (included map did help alot)

Thoroughly comfortable, clean, modern and very well appointed we had a wonderful stay getting to know the beautiful area. Both Becky and Robert were gracious, helpful and discrete. Both were well versed in the local points of interest and details of the countries policies and politics. Very informative.

We highly recommend a stay with them and will return ourselves soon.

Highly recommended

We’ve had a fantastic 20 days at el Chaparral. If you like quiet rural holiday with a history then this place is for you. Cantabria has it all: mountains and beaches (there is such a great choice that you won’t be bored with the same one everyday). You can easily leave your childrens playing around as el Chaparral is away from main road.
We couldn’t ask for better hosts. Let lack of Spanish language capability don’t put you off as Becky and Robert are happy to book you a table at the restaurant or appointment. By the way they know great restaurant that serve huuuge I mean HUGE portions and tasty local food. Both Becky and Robert are not only great business people but also very approachable and easy to talk to.
The apartment that we had was clean and well furnished. We had separate entrance and terrace with table+chair, BBQ and stunning view from each window. Plenty of car space in front of el Chaparral in very safe area. It is very close to Santander and Bilbao where you can take ferry or plane.
If you are horse enthusiast you MUST ask Becky to book you hack/ride at the local stable and I’ll promise you wouldn’t like to get off (they have comfy western saddles) and again views - you can even go to the beach. There is plenty of walk trails in nearby woodland however if you take dog like us you need to make sure that there is no hunters before you let him off the leash. If you like sport/outdoor activities try surfing with plenty of surfing schools and shops. Go to Picos de Europa which is about 1.5 h way by car but definitely worth it. You’ll be surprised how high and steep the mountains actually are. If you have equipment, you can climb too.
We’re not big fans of museums but we recommend visiting Museo de Altamira with Neocave and of course beautiful village Santillana del Mar.
“The cave of Altamira has the privilege of being the first place in the world where the existence of rock art from the Upper Palaeolithic age was identified.”

Thank you Robert and Becky for great service and atmosphere you provided, you made us feel like at home but with better view and weather :)

Incredible experience. Exceeded expectations!

  • 5 of 5
Our family of 5 with young children had an excellent stay at this beautiful farm. Robert and Becky could not have been more accommodating to our needs. A perfect distance from the local village we enjoyed the countryside without a car and even though it rained a few of the days, our children loved the entire experience. The apartment met our needs perfectly, providing everything necessary for a great stay, including BBQ and baking cookies. With a baby in tow, it was great for safety concerns and also introducing the kids to animals. The owners provided just the right amount of interaction and hospitality without being overbearing. Our daughter often talks about her time there and we all look forward to going back again.

Thanks to Cantabria’s climate, the local golf courses are well-watered and well-kept. Probably the best of them is the Real Club de Golf de Pedreña, with its position overlooking the Bay of Santander, making it one of Spain’s finest. It was designed by Severiano Ballesteros, who was born in Cantabria.

Alto Campóo Ski Resort lies between the Cuchillon, El Chivo and Tres Mares mountains. Here you'll find 19km of ski and snowboard runs. The resort offers magnificent facilities for family skiing and offers some of the best views in all of Spain.
