The tiny autonomous region of Cantabria in northern Spain is one of the Iberian Peninsula’s hidden jewels and largely overlooked by the mass market tourist industry. Most British holidaymakers arriving by ferry at the Cantabrian capital of Santander only catch a glimpse of this gorgeous region through the car window as they pass through en route to one of the costas. The Cantabrian climate supports a breath taking array of landscapes ranging from spectacular mountains bedecked with flower-filled meadows to lush green valleys and dense forests which provide a safe haven for some of the country’s few remaining wild wolves and bears. There are plenty superb sandy beaches which never suffer the over-crowding of Spain’s eastern and southern coastlines, hidden coves and pretty fishing villages to be found along the Cantabrian coastline. Fresh seafood is prominent on local menus and there are some exceptional dining spots to be found locally.

Further details for this vacation apartment rental in Cantabria, Spain

Things To See: The spectacular Picos de Europa (Peaks of Europe) mountain range, to the south west of us, is one of the best places in Spain for hiking, climbing and various other outdoor pursuits. And for those more interested in history and culture, Cantabria is a treasure trove of medieval villages, ancient monuments, grandiose architectural gems and well-preserved prehistoric cave paintings. One of the region’s most precious assets is the Altamira Cave where huge multi-coloured paintings dating back 15,000 years adorn the ceiling. Access to the cave is severely restricted these days but you can see a recreation of the paintings at the Altamira National Museum which is only a 15 minute walk from us. The Cabarceno Nature Reserve, forty five minutes drive from us, is one of Cantabria’s top visitor attractions with its safari park where endangered exotic creatures from five continents roam semi-wild. The park is home to more than 500 species including elephants, leopards, bears and lions.

Cycling In Cantabria: Whatever your level, beginner or expert, Cantabria offers a wide range of either on-road or off-road cycling. For those in search of steep trails and wild off-road routes the Picos de Europa mountain range is only an hour away. Local to us you will find traffic free trails suitable for all ages and abilities. We can provide a safe place for your bike, cleaning facilities, general tools and, for adventurous couples, a Cannondale mountain bike tandem to explore the local trails with.

Other Services: For those wishing to improve their Spanish language we can organise private tuition for all ages. If you’re considering a more permanent move to Cantabria we can provide advice about such things as residency, employment, property purchase, health care, etc. We can also help by providing introductions to local English speaking builders, architects, estate agents, independent solicitors and council representatives. Please phone for more details.

Other Activities: Cycling, Surfing, Wind-Surfing, Fishing, Swimming, Tennis, Horse Riding, Walking & Potholing.

A great place to stay in a great part of Spain!

Chris & family Worcestershire, UK
Review Submitted: January 14, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2007
We stayed in the two bedroom apartment in July/August 2007 - A family of three with a two and a half year old daughter.

The location of the farmhouse is stunning, in it's own grounds with a view to the sea in the distance. The property is easy to find just at the top of the hill going west from Santilliana.

The property was very clean and modern, almost like walking straight into a room setting at IKEA! The layout of the property is ideal for a holiday let - open plan kitchen/living room/diner, with bathrooms and bedrooms off.

The property is surrounded by farmland and is therefore really quiet. Rob and Becky were on hand to provide any help needed and for friendly chats and advice about what to do in the area, including advice on beaches, how to get to the Hypermarket etc. We had no problems at all - the only thing I needed was with the TV remote control!

There are loads of beaches nearby and plenty of lovely small towns to explore, such as San Vicente and Comillas (fantastic artisan ice crams in the little town square). The magnificant Picos De Europa mountains are only just over an hour away - the cable car from Fuente De is amazing, and another good trip is the funicular railway inside the mountain to Bulnes. The Cares Gorge walk is also a must for hikers. The city of Santander is also worth a visit. A car is vital to get around - don't even consider it without. The location is ideal if you are coming over on Brittany Ferries from Plymouth, as it's only a 30 min drive from the port.

Cantabria is probably Spain's best kept secret, as there is so much to see and do and the beaches really are wonderful. The sea is not as warm as the med but you get proper waves for surfers if you are into that sort of thing. The only thing to remember is that the weather can be a bit more changeable in this part of Spain, so you probably won't get wall-to-wall sunshine. It is also really child friendly too.

To sum up - a great place to stay in a great part of Spain.

Farmhouse Apartment near Santillana

BenimAile Twickenham, UK.
Review Submitted: November 4, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
The apartment was very nice and well equipped with a double-bed bedroom and a bedroom with bunks and a single-bed. There's a sofa-bed, but it would be cramped with more than 4 or 5 staying. The kitchen is good and the living room is nice. Facilities were clean and in good condition.
You can sit out and admire the lovely view. There were three friendly cats and a dog, which the children loved so much that they never switched the TV on. They also liked the trampoline. The owner family were friendly.
The ex-farmhouse is surrounded by lovely countryside, with lots of cows and horses and quiet country roads. It's a 20 minute walk into Santillana, and you can also walk to the Altamira museum or to the sea. You'd want a car to go to one of the beaches.
We had 6 days of warm, sunny weather at the end of October - but this isn't guaranteed.

Erlebnisreiche Tage in Kantabrien

Gabi und Jürgen Idar-Oberstein, Rhld-Pf., Deutschland
Review Submitted: October 11, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2008

A Hidden Gem

Los Ingleses Reading/England
Review Submitted: October 7, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
We found this apartment quite by chance as the one we should have stayed in turned out to be in the middle of a building site. What a difference!!

The location is superb, in the hills overlooking Santillana del Mar and the Cantabrian coast. We woke every morning to the sound of the cows grazing in the fields, such a relief from the roar of the bulldozers.

The apartment is very clean and well equipped, mainly from Ikea, and the bed was long enough for me to sleep in (I'm 6'1) comfortably.

Robert and Becky are lovely people who will make you feel really welcome and also can give you lots of guidance on places to visit and where to eat. Just one tip from me, we had a coffee and a cake in the plaza in Comillas and it cost 12 euros.

If you like rest and relaxation then you will love this place.

August holiday in Cantabria

Shelley3 High Wycombe
Review Submitted: September 6, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
We thoroughly enjoyed a fortnight's stay at this property in Cantabria which was only a stone's throw from the ferry port at Santander. The location enabled us to visit the Picos mountains, as well as having the advantage of visiting numerous local beaches. The beaches were delightful and mostly clean. Although tackling the huge Atlantic waves was exhilarating for us, it was maybe not ideal for our 6 year old!

We were extremely pleased with our choice of apartment which had a veranda from which to enjoy our meals overlooking views of the countryside and sea. The apartment was very tastefully decorated, extremely clean and well maintained. The hosts were very welcoming and helpful, and we were sad to say goodbye at the end of our stay. I have already recommended this property to a friend!
