Our fully renovated farmhouse is over 100 years old and is located on the unspoilt coastline of Cantabria in the north of Spain. We reside on over 13 acres of farmland and enjoy uninterrupted views of the Cantabrian sea and surrounding countryside. We’re within easy walking distance of the medieval town of Santillana del Mar and we’re only a 10 minute drive to the nearest family beach.
We're a young(ish) family of four, originally from Reading, England. We also live full time at the property and we're always happy to offer help and advice during your stay whilst, at the same time, respecting your privacy. Please take time to read our reviews below as we try to offer a little more than just a roof over your head!!
The Spanish provinces of Cantabria and Asturias together form a large part of the area known as Green Spain, a region far removed from the frantic activity of Spain's southern resorts it's easy to imagine that you're in an entirely different country. This is a traditional, still largely undiscovered part of Spain where the countryside and coast combine to reward visitors with a truly unforgettable experience.
There is no doubt that Santillana del Mar is one of the most perfectly preserved medieval villages anywhere in Spain and even Europe. To wander its network of cobbled streets and alleys lined with ancient stone houses has often been likened to entering a living museum. Visitors can easily become totally immersed in the atmosphere of centuries of history.
Just over a mile from us you'll find the Altamira Cave. Famous for its prehistoric paintings of boars, bison and deer dating from the end of the Ice Age the cave has become known as the Sistine Chapel of prehistoric art. Although the cave itself is closed to the public a museum adjoining the site has an exact recreation of the paintings using the very same basic materials and rock structure. It really is worth a visit.
All around us you'll find some of the most spectacularly beautiful countryside imaginable. Lush green valleys and forests, sleepy villages have changed little in centuries. Venture just a few miles and you'll quickly find the majestic Picos de Europa mountains rising to over 8,000 feet. Located in wonderful natural surroundings the cable car at Fuente Dé rises from 1094m to 1847m. At the top you can admire one of the most outstanding views of the Picos de Europa mountain range. Once there you can also trek back down, have a picnic, or just enjoy the view. All this combines to produce a landscape that will literally take your breath away.
Within a few miles you'll find a wonderful Safari Park you can visit by car or on foot. At the Parque de la Naturaleza de Cabárceno you'll find, in partial freedom, animals from all over the world. Between trees and cliffs you can admire a collection including bears, lions, tigers, wolves, elephants, gorillas and camels. The bird show is truly unmissable.
Whatever your level Cantabria offers a wide range of walking and cycling. For those in search of steep trails and wild off-road routes the Picos de Europa mountain range is only an hour away. Local to us you will find traffic free trails suitable for all ages and abilities. We can provide a safe place for your bike, cleaning facilities, general tools and, for adventurous couples, a Cannondale tandem to explore with.
The two major cities along the Cantabrian and Asturias coast line are stylish Santander and historical Gijon. In between them you'll find just about everything a holidaymaker could desire, from a rich cultural heritage, sporting facilities, nightlife, entertainment galore and fine dining. Fresh seafood (including locally caught lobster and clams) is prominent on local menus and there are some exceptional dining spots to be found locally.
Cantabria and Asturias share a coastline of approximately 200 miles, along which you'll discover any number of colourful fishing villages and gorgeous sandy beaches blissfully free of crowds. One of our nearest beaches, Playa del Luaña in Cobreces, is only a quick 10 minute drive away. It is suitable for all ages as it has a shallow fresh water river running into the sea. Whilst the older kids enjoy the surf the younger children can have as much fun paddling up to their knees in the river.
Getting here really couldn't be easier. We're only a quick 30 minute drive from Santander airport and ferry port. Bilbao airport and ferry port is also within easy reach. Ryanair provide cheap daily flights from Stanstead to Santander. Easyjet also fly daily from Stanstead to Bilbao. Car hire is provided at both airports. If you wish to bring your own car (or hate flying) Brittany Ferries sail from Portsmouth and Plymouth to Santander and Bilbao.
If you’re considering a more permanent move to Northern Spain we can provide a translation service and advice about such things as residency, employment, property purchase, health care, etc. We can also help by providing introductions to local, English speaking builders, architects, estate agents, independent solicitors and council representatives. Please e-mail or phone for further details.
For those wishing to improve their Spanish we can also organise private tuition for all ages.
