The tiny autonomous region of Cantabria in northern Spain is one of the Iberian Peninsula’s hidden jewels and largely overlooked by the mass market tourist industry. Most British holidaymakers arriving by ferry at the Cantabrian capital of Santander only catch a glimpse of this gorgeous region through the car window as they pass through en route to one of the costas. The Cantabrian climate supports a breath taking array of landscapes ranging from spectacular mountains bedecked with flower-filled meadows to lush green valleys and dense forests which provide a safe haven for some of the country’s few remaining wild wolves and bears. There are plenty superb sandy beaches which never suffer the over-crowding of Spain’s eastern and southern coastlines, hidden coves and pretty fishing villages to be found along the Cantabrian coastline. Fresh seafood is prominent on local menus and there are some exceptional dining spots to be found locally.

Things To See: The spectacular Picos de Europa (Peaks of Europe) mountain range, to the south west of us, is one of the best places in Spain for hiking, climbing and various other outdoor pursuits. And for those more interested in history and culture, Cantabria is a treasure trove of medieval villages, ancient monuments, grandiose architectural gems and well-preserved prehistoric cave paintings. One of the region’s most precious assets is the Altamira Cave where huge multi-coloured paintings dating back 15,000 years adorn the ceiling. Access to the cave is severely restricted these days but you can see a recreation of the paintings at the Altamira National Museum which is only a 15 minute walk from us. The Cabarceno Nature Reserve, forty five minutes drive from us, is one of Cantabria’s top visitor attractions with its safari park where endangered exotic creatures from five continents roam semi-wild. The park is home to more than 500 species including elephants, leopards, bears and lions.

Cycling In Cantabria: Whatever your level, beginner or expert, Cantabria offers a wide range of either on-road or off-road cycling. For those in search of steep trails and wild off-road routes the Picos de Europa mountain range is only an hour away. Local to us you will find traffic free trails suitable for all ages and abilities. We can provide a safe place for your bike, cleaning facilities, general tools and, for adventurous couples, a Cannondale mountain bike tandem to explore the local trails with.

Other Services: For those wishing to improve their Spanish language we can organise private tuition for all ages. If you’re considering a more permanent move to Cantabria we can provide advice about such things as residency, employment, property purchase, health care, etc. We can also help by providing introductions to local English speaking builders, architects, estate agents, independent solicitors and council representatives. Please phone for more details.

Other Activities: Cycling, Surfing, Wind-Surfing, Fishing, Swimming, Tennis, Horse Riding, Walking & Potholing.

Autumn Break

Review Submitted: November 16, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
This was our second visit to the property at 'El Chaparral'.On this occasion we stayed in the studio apartment and found it to be clean , comfortable and offering all the facilities we needed for our short stay visit. The weather was extremely kind during our stay and we were happy to soak in the relaxing atmosphere and chill out. El Chaparral is such a relaxing place, with very friendly hospitable English owners.During our stay we revisited and explored some of the wonderful beaches that the area offers. I am sure this will not be our last visit to the property it is so easy to locate , just a short drive from the port of Santander.

We have just come back from a week in this lovely part of Spain and was wowed by the sheer beauty of the area and the fanatastic accommodation. The location is excellent for touring the area and there's lots to do and see. We particularly loved the Wildlife park -Carbarceno, especially the bird demonstration - not to be missed!! Santillana del Mar is charming and you can spend hours wandering around the cobbled streets admiring the stunning architecture and soaking up the history. Loads of fab beaches near by, walks in the mountains and not too expensive restaurants to try. The owners of the property are extremely helpful and friendly and very respectful of your privacy. We hope to see them again in the not too distant future.

Great summer holiday destination

Review Submitted: September 1, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
We have recently returned from our first family holiday to Spain and would definitely recommend staying in the Studio Apartment - our 11year old daughter loved her own space in the loft bedroom !! The living area compact as described, but more than adequate with the addition of a sheltered deck and BBQ - we all enjoyed the alfresco dining...
Becky and Robert were very welcoming, thank you for that cup of tea on our arrival !! Also, the never ending advice and suggestions on locals sights and attractions - also the supermarket opening times !!
Santillana was well worth a few visits, the Saturday morning quieter which made for easier browsing around the many shops, cafes and interesting buildings.
We especially enjoyed the local beaches, Playa de Luana for great surf and Comillas our favourites.
Having driven through France, we didn't feel equal to long day trips into the mountains, but did enjoy San Vicente and Santander - the car ferry to Portsmouth recommended for ease of travel.
Thank you again for a great holiday - you and all your family (pets included!!) made our time in El Chaparral very special, we hope to meet you again.

Fantastic trip

We spent 8 days in this property and enjoyed every minute.
The description of the property was very accurate, small but adequate for us as a couple, very well equipped and clean.
We would have no hesitation in recommending this to our friends but would make clear that you are most definitely out in the country and the property has animals, ok if you are a cat lover.
The owners were really friendly and helpful, nothing was any problem to them or their kids.Information about the area was shared by them and proved to be helpful.
The area had lots to offer both in the local vicinity and further afield if you had a car, which I would recommend in order to get the most from this lovely area.
Beautiful beaches close by really worth a visit, the village was beautiful, lots to see and do. Lovely restaurants, a bonus if you can speak the language.
We liked best the Picos de Europa, especially the visitors centre, Suances beach and eating churros for breakfast in the village square.

In the words of my children "The best holiday ever." What more can you ask for!
We hired a car which we picked up form Santander airport. The directions to the appartment were easy to follow and when we arrived the beautiful rural location surpassed our expectations.
The appartment is well equipped and tastefully furnished.
The owners Rob and Becky were available for friendly chats and helpful advice on places to visit,shops and days out if required.We would recommend;
1) Picos Europas -For spectacular mountain scenery and great walking.

2) Santander. For White sandy beaches and free bike hire.
3) Bilboa - For Guggenheim museum and art/culture
4) Carbarenco . For one of best wildlife parks in Europe.
In summary This area is one of Spains best kept secrets!
Would love to return and great value for money .
