The Auberge is set in the sleepy, quiet, village of Bouriege which is surrounded by vineyards, in the foothills of the Pyrenees in the heart of Cathar country in the Languedoc. Our three story, four bedroom village house has been lovingly restored and period furnished. From the top floor you can access an outdoor terrace that leads down to a solar heated swimming pool. Down the small alley at the back of the house is the 'secret garden' A old stone wall enclosed garden full of roses and grapevines as well as a barbecue and hammock.
Adjacent to the house is a two bedroom, two story converted stone barn; its interior balcony overlooks the open studio loft space and leads out to the exterior terrace and swimming pool.
Down the road, next to a stream is our second garden where we play croquet and badminton or just lounge in the hammock.
These houses while completely independent are just next door to each other and rented together are wonderful for a large house party.
An Englishman and an American who met over a haricut and moved from Oxford to New York over twenty years ago. Alvin is an artist which allows us the freedom to divide our time easily between New York and Bouriege. Each place is the perfect foil for the other.
Over twenty years ago while traveling around Europe in our Morris Minor Convertible, which is still happily living in Bouriege and gets a regular Sunday outing, we accidentally ended up buying a house. We fell in love with the area and our lovely old inn.
Alvin is also very handy. So over the years, he has added skylights, built the terrace and dug our swimming pool. We both have had fun furnishing the house with local antiques found in the brocantes or vide greniers ( the French equivalent of a car boot sale) or even from our lovely neighbor who, when he retired from making wine, restored old furniture.
We have been fortunate enough to make wonderful friends in the village and the area and admitted into the local community. Alvin helps the men set up for the summer village fete, while I stereo typically am in the kitchen with the women, preparing the food for the evening meal. We have introduced our friends to the joys of indian food and sushi while they have taught us how to make pate, plant our tomatoes at the right time, and eat three different types of fois gras!
We like to say that we bought our house for its key. When you come to Bouriege and you see the enormous house key, you will understand why. We also say without our bathtub we wouldn't have bought it. When we found auberge,it had no bathtub or shower. Just a sink. We told ourselves that if we found, in one day, an old ball and claw bathtub, something I had always wanted, then we should go ahead and purchase the house to go with it. Needless to say we found the tub! It is the piece de resistance in our large bathroom. We took over a bedroom and converted into our bathroom. It is big enough to have a party in and we have.
