Bouriege House Rental Photos and Description

Self Catering Rental With Pool And Gardens In The Foothills Of The Pyrenees

The Auberge is set in the sleepy, quiet, village of Bouriege which is surrounded by vineyards, in the foothills of the Pyrenees in the heart of Cathar country in the Languedoc. Our three story, four bedroom village house has been lovingly restored and period furnished. From the top floor you can access an outdoor terrace that leads down to a solar heated swimming pool. Down the small alley at the back of the house is the 'secret garden' A old stone wall enclosed garden full of roses and grapevines as well as a barbecue and hammock.

Adjacent to the house is a two bedroom, two story converted stone barn; its interior balcony overlooks the open studio loft space and leads out to the exterior terrace and swimming pool.

Down the road, next to a stream is our second garden where we play croquet and badminton or just lounge in the hammock.

These houses while completely independent are just next door to each other and rented together are wonderful for a large house party.

On this floor is also the living room, full of books, music and lots of light. On the top floor is the yellow sky-lit attic bedroom with adjoining study/dressing area with a double bed.. At the top of the stairs to the right is another bedroom, the blue room, with a double bed and a large skylight and steps up to the outdoor terrace. Next to this is a bathroom. An Englishman and an American who met over a haricut and moved from Oxford to New York over twenty years ago. Alvin is an artist which allows us the freedom to divide our time easily between New York and Bouriege. Each place is the perfect foil for the other.

Nike Lanning purchased this house in 1989

Over twenty years ago while traveling around Europe in our Morris Minor Convertible, which is still happily living in Bouriege and gets a regular Sunday outing, we accidentally ended up buying a house. We fell in love with the area and our lovely old inn.

Alvin is also very handy. So over the years, he has added skylights, built the terrace and dug our swimming pool. We both have had fun furnishing the house with local antiques found in the brocantes or vide greniers ( the French equivalent of a car boot sale) or even from our lovely neighbor who, when he retired from making wine, restored old furniture.

We have been fortunate enough to make wonderful friends in the village and the area and admitted into the local community. Alvin helps the men set up for the summer village fete, while I stereo typically am in the kitchen with the women, preparing the food for the evening meal. We have introduced our friends to the joys of indian food and sushi while they have taught us how to make pate, plant our tomatoes at the right time, and eat three different types of fois gras!

We like to say that we bought our house for its key. When you come to Bouriege and you see the enormous house key, you will understand why. We also say without our bathtub we wouldn't have bought it. When we found auberge,it had no bathtub or shower. Just a sink. We told ourselves that if we found, in one day, an old ball and claw bathtub, something I had always wanted, then we should go ahead and purchase the house to go with it. Needless to say we found the tub! It is the piece de resistance in our large bathroom. We took over a bedroom and converted into our bathroom. It is big enough to have a party in and we have.

Fantastic, quirky house full of charm and surprise

We had a lovely week in Bouriege. The house was delightful, and Nike and Alvin were most welcoming. We all particulary enjoyed the fantastic large bathroom and bath. The secret garden was a delight for sitting in in the evening and enjoying a barbecue. The children loved going down to the big garden - to sit or run around. We loved the old-fashioned charm and the comfortable beds. Obviously, a lot of thought has gone into the restoration of this house. The kitchen was fabulous - we loved the feeling of having gone back a few decades to a more romantic time - the huge cooker, the old farmhouse furniture - and all the candles everywhere. Thanks for a great week.

Favourite outings were to the mountains - all those gorgeous gorges. Carcassonne was better than expected, and we enjoyed the degustation at local vineyards.

Absolutely amazing! We stayed in Auberge No. 1. Bouriege is in the middle of a beautiful nowhere, but accessible to the outer world with a car - be sure to take the bicycles out, take a long walk, or relax in the garden. The kitchen/ dining room is a dream kitchen for those who like to cook and have candlelit dinners ;)  Be sure to do your shopping before you settle in- There are great local markets during different days of the week, but Limoux has great supermarkets to fill in with the extra things you may need. The place is exactly as pictured with lots of charm. The auberge is well equipped with linens, dishes, staple products etc. and the hosts  friendly, fabulous and full of good ideas.  Enjoy!

Notes:
From the top floor of the auberge via the outdoor terrace is a shared solar heated black outdoor swimming pool set within a small stone walled courtyard. There are two gardens. The 'secret garden' is a small stone walled garden filled with roses and grapevines, the all important hammock, ping pong table and swing and a simple barbecue for dining outdoors. The second garden, further down the village, runs alongside a stream and has cherry, apple, pear and plum trees round its edge. There is a central lawn where we often play croquet and badminton or lie in one of the many hammocks with a good book.
