The Perfect Holiday

Was it the luck of the Irish? I planned a trip to Cork to explore the land of my ancestors, with my husband and 15-year-old daughter, and my online research led me to Rock Cottage. The building is exactly what you see in the photos, spotlessly clean, and the description absolutely accurate. The property was postcard-perfect: beautifully maintained gardens (the hydrangea took our breath away), and surrounded by gorgeous terrain of meadows, lush vegetation, and rocky hills. We climbed the hill behind the cottage every day to see the incredible 360 degree view of the surrounding countryside, dotted with cattle, sheep and a view of the water.
Our host, Barbara, was helpful and friendly, but allowed us total privacy. We enjoyed the most sensational dinner in her dining room on our last night - where she brought out dishes that were so artistically presented, we were reluctant to spoil the presentation by eating them, but one taste and we couldn't stop.
In the cottage itself, we really liked the bathroom - again, absolutely pristine, and the shower was excellent, something we really appreciated. The kitchen had all the amenities you could ask of a cottage and Barbara had thoughtfully left a stack of brochures on the bookcase for us to pore over to plan our adventures.
You could spend a week just reading in the cottage by the fire, sipping cups of tea or a glass of wine, strolling the fields to feed carrots to the donkeys; you could walk to the neighbour's spa for an amazing full body massage; you might venture into Durrus for fish & chips or to check your email in the hotel pub or sample chocolate or view artwork at the shops; or you might do as we did, using Rock Cottage as the base to explore the peninsulas: Mizen, Sheep's Head, Beara and Kerry. My plan was to take lots of photographs of the rugged seashores, and I got lots of great shots!
I realize we did luck out with the weather which can make a difference: the rain would start only once we were back for the evening, sometimes falling all night, but the sun would come out in the morning just as we were preparing to leave. Truly a blessed holiday - one we will never forget.
