Obertraun is a village situated on the shores of Lake Hallstatt, in the Inner Salzkammergut region of Austria. The Inner Salzkammergut is a region packed with a variety of attractions. Since December 1997, a large part of this region has been honored with a position on the UNESCO World Heritage list. With this distinction, the region joins the ranks of other prestigious UNESCO World Heritage sites such as the Pyramids, the ruins of Pompei, the Great Wall of China, and the Galapagos Islands. With its unique network of caves and variety of flora and fauna, the region is considered a complex phenomenon. It is not only a cultural heritage site but also has the distinction of being a natural heritage location as well. With this international honor the region finds itself in an exclusive circle among UNESCO World Heritage sites.
