This tranquil apartment is enormously popular. Self-contained, it forms the first floor of an immaculate, well appointed private house hovering above the ocean at Garajau only 15 minutes drive from the capital town of Funchal and 5 minutes walk from a well stocked small supermarket, an ATM, a pharmacy, buses, taxis and a few good restaurants. The open plan sitting/dining room, with well-equipped kitchen and laundry behind, has large French windows leading out to a spacious terrace offering indoor/outdoor living all year round. The two bedrooms have the same uninterrupted views south over the sea. This is an idyllic retreat where you will be warmly welcomed by the friendly and helpful owner, Tina, who speaks English and Portuguese and is a fund of knowledge on all you might want to know about the island. Repeat guests return to enjoy the comfort and superb location, grateful to be so near the charming city of Funchal and yet apart from the normal tourist zone.

Garajau was originally a sleepy fishing village named after the flocks of terns that used to nest in the area and is now one of the most fashionable residential district of Funchal. Situated along the cliffs, with spectacular ocean views south towards the Desertas islands, Garajau is centrally placed and only 15 minutes drive from Funchal, the airport, golf, sea & pool swimming and Madeira's famous gardens. On a high bluff below Garajau stands a towering statue of Christ with outstretched arms, modelled on the Christo Rei at Rio de Janeiro - viewpoint here is definitely worth a visit to watch the sun set against the backdrop of the Bay of Funchal. A new cable car descends the steep cliff to the pebble beach, newly built changing rooms and restaurant below. Further east is the coastline conservation area at Garajau, one of Europe's first underwater nature reserves, which provides a sanctuary for whales, dolphins and seals.

In the immediate area: Within 3-5 minutes' walk you have various cafés and good restaurants including one which offers excellent take-away meals, a bakery and supermarket with ATM, a pharmacy, taxi rank and bus stops. Internet access is available in the excellent art shop. At Caniço, only 5 minutes away by car/taxi/bus, you have a full range of shops, restaurants and banks. Tina finds that many guests enjoy indoor swimming at the Dom Pedro Hotel 3 minutes walk away or you may prefer swimming in the sea or seawater pool at the new five star Galo Hotel in nearby Caniço de Baixo for a small charge. The charming city of Funchal is only 15 minutes away by car or 25 minutes by bus.

Walking: Madeira is a walker's paradise and Garajau is a good location from which to explore different parts of the island using the levadas which cover the island, extending to over 2000km in total. You will find walking books in the apartment and we recommend a guided walk for those who are not familiar with the island. Tina can help you with this.

Gardens: Plant lovers are in their element in this area of Madeira. Local gardens include the Botanical Gardens with adjacent Orchid Garden, Palheiro Gardens or Monte Palace Gardens.

Golf: Golfers will find two superb golf courses within easy reach - the 18-hole championship Palheiro golf course and the 27-hole Santa da Serra golf course, both with spectacular views. A 3rd course is under construction 45 mins drive to the south-western part of the island and a 4th is planned at São Vicente. Tina can help you access discounted green fees.

This apartment certainly lived up to its description. It was quiet, well equipped,beautifully maintained and with lovely sea views.
Tina is a lovely lady who made us very welcome. She is an wonderful hostess and an excellent ambassador for Madiera.
Funchal and Canico are accessible by bus. Also there are plenty of taxis available in Funchal for the return if you don't want to come back by bus. A car is useful but not essential.
Locally there are restaurants and bars including an excellent takeaway. In Funchal there are plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes. The botanical gardens are lovely and the cable car an experience nnot to be missed.
A highlight of our trip was afternoon tea at Reids - but it needs booking in advance.
We are looking forward to our next visit so we can explore more of this delightful and friendly island and we will certainly stay at Garajau. It made the holiday.

Garajau Riviera - A very special holiday

We were celebrating our 30th wedding anniverary and wanted a special holiday. Booking was easy and the photographs and details of the property on the website were correct (no nasty surprises!). Carlos was waiting with his taxi to pick us up from airport as arranged at time of booking. The apartment was very well equipped and straight away it felt like home. Tina the owner was very helpful and showed us the local area. We saved ourselves so much time and worry as Tina was able to answer all our questions. We easily coped without a car the first week but decided to hire a car the second week to see more of the island. We visited gardens, walked on the lavadas, did the sledge ride, saw breathtaking scenery and went to a service in the English Church in Funchal.
Highlight of the trip was tea at Reid's Hotel!

As two well travelled "fifty somethings" it takes a heck of a lot to amaze us - but this place did !
Views to die for. First class location.Perfect amenities.
In fact everything as described on the website - and more.
The owner is helpful,caring and so considerate as to even drive us into Funchal and to local beauty spots.She also recommended many beautiful walks and her knowledge of
Madeira is inspiring. We shall certainly return and will encourage our friends to visit.
We found a superb restaurant in Garajau main street called "Figos " where my wife said the food was the best that she had tasted anywhere in Europe. I have to agree. It was outstanding ! The service and atmosphere first class - pay it a visit . So go to Madeira,stay at the Garajau Riviera Apartment,eat at Figos Restaurant in Garajau,have lots of fabulous healthy walks and drink in the spectacular scenery - because we certainly will !
