Crete is the largest of the greek islands and is the most southerly point in Europe. It has a wonderful climate with long hot summers and short, mild (though unpredictable!) winters. It is awash with fascinating history dating back to Minoan times. The famous Knossos Palace, said to be one of the most important archaeological sites in the world, is sited close by in Heraklion where there are several excellent museums to visit. Crete can lay claim to the birthplace of Zeus, and Fodele, (on a slightly more mortal plane!) to the birthplace of El Greco.
For a slice of more recent history, visit the old hippie colony of Matala with its beautiful beach and ancient caves where the hippies used to camp out! There are so many places of interest here that people come back year after year. For more earthly pleasures, we have golf (a PGA course 35km away), watersports (diving, windsurfing, waterskiing, banana boats etc.
