Hedingham Castle was built by Aubrey de Vere II in around 1140, using the Archbishop of Rochester as his architect. Now the home of the Lindsay family, direct descendants of the de Veres and Earls of Oxford, the Castle towers over the very attractive, largely medieval and Tudor, village of Castle Hedingham on the Essex/Suffolk border, with its quaint pubs, restaurants and shops. The Castle and the private 18th century mansion are surrounded by beautiful grounds which include woods, a lake and beautiful walks and are home to a wide variety of birds, wildfowl, flora and fauna. Garden Cottage entrance hall leads to the cosy sitting room with open fire, large bay window and TV/DVD player, the dining room, a shower room with WC/WB and kitchen. Well equipped kitchen and rear lobby. Frist floor has one double bedroom, twin bedroom and single bedroom. Private mature garden with park and woodlands. Pets not allowed, no smoking no under 10's. Private drive and parking.

Hedingham Castle is surrounded by lakes and woodlands. The valley walk is famous for its snowdrops in February and a carpet of bluebells in May. The Castle is across the Tudor bridge which spans the moat. The Castle grounds host several medieval events during the summer months including jousting tournaments on the Inner Bailey and mock battles. Marks Hall is a traditional English estate which lies in the Essex countryside near Coggeshall. You can explore over 300 acres of woodland via trails, enjoy the lakes, the 17th Century walled garden and visit the visitor centre which is housed in a 15th Century barn. Near Marks Hall is Paycocke’s which is a National Trust property. This is a merchant's house dating from the 15th Century and demonstrates the wealth generated from the wool trade in the 15th and 16th centuries in East Anglia.

Garden Cottage is a two storey cottage with ground floor entrance hall, sitting room with large bay window and TV/DVD player, dining room, shower room with WC/WB, and kitchen. The well-equipped kitchen, with large fridge/freezer, dishwasher, electric oven and gas hobs, has a small breakfast table and leads to a rear lobby, with concealed washer/dryer, that leads into the attractive, mature garden. First floor: Stairs to the first floor lead to a landing off which are one double bedroom, one twin bedroom and a small single bedroom (4’6” bed), all with attractive curtains and bed linen. Also off the landing is the bathroom with large, double-ended bath with hand shower, WC/WB and cupboard. The cottage is centrally heated throughout. Outside: Private mature garden with park and woodland views. Terrace and sitting out furniture. Garden Cottage is approached through Hedingham Castle’s parkland with its own private gravel drive and parking outside the cottage.

Guests can take advantage of complimentary entry to the several Medieval and Jousting events that take place in the grounds over several summer week-ends.
