'San Niccolò' is a small romantic apartment in a quiet position inside the ancient city walls, just less than ten minutes' walk along the banks of the river Arno to the Ponte Vecchio. It consists of the upper half of a two storey seventeenth century mews cottage, approached through an archway from a small and silent road: from the private street door, a staircase will lead you up to the living room with dining area and sofa bed, a small but well equipped kitchen, a large bedroom with double bed, separate spacious wardrobes and ensuite bathroom. From its strategic position on the left side of the Arno, 'San Niccolò' gives you the opportunity to be right in the heart of the city, close to its main museums and monuments, but also to take pleasant walks through the secret paths that climb the surrounding hills up to Piazzale Michelangelo and to enjoy the characteristic atmosphere of the area with its medieval streets, its small shops, open air restaurants, trattorie and cafés.

This is a perfect location if you want to easily walk through the city, its monuments and its museums, but also if you want to escape from its noise and confusion enjoying a romantic hideaway in the heart of medieval Florence.

Very charming and excellent value

We had a terrific stay in Florence at this very charming apartment. Past reviewers and the owner describe it very well. Everything was well appointed--plenty of blankets, pillows, etc., and the kitchen provided all we needed. The sofa bed was so comfortable--I don't think I've ever slept that well away from home. The apartment provides easy access to the Michelangelo plaza, and we walked through the ancient gate and up the hill to the plaza each night--a lovely ritual that will give us a lifetime of memories. As others have mentioned, the apartment is on a quiet street, which is very nice for privacy and relaxation. The only hitch was that we had a little difficulty finding it on arrival (we were walking from the train station, not taking a cab). Some others have mentioned concerns about the tub/shower, but I think this must have been resolved by replacing the tub with a simple shower stall. We had no problems with that. This is a terrific, comfortable place with plenty of character and charm. Welcoming and friendly owners. Well worth it.

Charming apartment

I stayed at this charming apartment for 2 weeks in Dec./08. The description of the place was very accurate. It was a very good value especially during Christmas albeit low season. Everything you needed was at your doorstep and all of the main attractions were just a short walk away. There was a well-stocked grocery store and a great choice of restaurants and cafes in the surrounding neighborhood. The owners were so accommodating and sweet. I was welcomed with a delicious Christmas Panetone dome which I sliced and toasted every morning. The whole apartment would fill with the wonderful fragrance of orange essence. The high speed wireless connection helped me stay in touch with family and friends.

The bath tub took some getting used to and was manageable after the first time. The kitchen had all the necessities. The only thing missing was a tea kettle.

The owners provided excellent customer service and were extremely helpful especially in arranging my departure for an early flight out. I would definitely recommend this place if you're looking for a quaint place to stay in the heart of Florence. Grazie mille to the owners for everything!

Charming apartment in an ideal location

The apartment was excellent value. It was charming and well-maintained and the location is ideal - off a quiet back street in an area of great character. Within five minutes' walk there are several bars and restaurants (we enjoyed Pizzeria I Tarocchi) and at least two well-stocked convenience stores (open on Sundays). Florence is so compact that a reasonably fit person can do all their sight-seeing on foot from the apartment. The Arno is nearby and the historic centre of Florence is just across the river (from the river you look straight across at one of the great churches, Santa Croce); the Uffizi Gallery is about fifteen minutes' walk away. On the other side it's only a short climb to the Piazzale Michelangelo for fabulous views of the city.

We stayed with our 19-year-old son and there was plenty of space. A few things to be aware of (perhaps especially if you are in the 55+ category). The sofa bed was really a bed with bolsters; it had a proper mattress yet was comfortable as a sofa. The bedroom had two single beds pushed together. The mattresses were quite comfortable but on the soft side and sagged somewhat; the pillows were very firm. The shower was over a sit-down bath fitting the space across the bathroom. It was awkward for standing and getting in and out was a bit tricky; we had no accidents but we did worry about slipping. There was no kettle but the apartment was otherwise amply supplied with crockery, cutlery, and cooking utensils.

The landlords were away on holiday but easy to contact by phone, welcoming and very helpful.
