An imposing, stone built farmhouse, Caicrese is situated in a peaceful location near the medieval village of Montone in Umbria, the 'Green Heart of Italy'.
The property has recently been renovated and throughout the work has been carried out with great taste and attention to detail. The house retains all its original features which, combined with modern amenities, creates an extremely comfortable home.
Montone: Montone, which in Italian means 'Aries' or the 'Ram', is a small medieval village unchanged throughout the centuries and beautifully preserved. It is surrounded by sturdy walls and has a network of narrow streets, alleys and stairways. Its origins date back to the 10th century and in recent years the traditions of the medieval period have been brought back to life during re-enactments of historical events.
There is a film festival in July and an archery tournament in August when different sectors of the village compete against each other, dressed in historical costume. There are several very good restaurants and a cafe for breakfast croissants in the traffic free main square.
Local Interest: A weekly market is held in the car parking areas by the fortress and in the main square, in Umbertide, the nearest town, every Wednesday morning. Produce includes fresh fruits, vegetables, hams, fish, cheeses and other local specialities. There are numerous restaurants and cafes to enjoy. A list of our favourites can be found in the guest book.
The 5 acres of land surrounding the property ensure wonderful privacy. There is a tree lined drive providing shade to park your car and a covered well at the entrance to the property. A two bedroom guest-house, is adjacent to the house. Surrounding the house and with French doors from the kitchen and sitting room, is a large terrace and lawn with magnificent uninterrupted views of the valley. Nearby there is a covered pergola for dining al fresco, and a path leading down to the swimming pool and pool house. Behind and in front of the house are mature olive groves. At the rear of the guest house is a footpath which descends through an oak forest to a stream below. You may occasionally meet locals looking for truffles or out hunting. From the terrace buzzards can be seen circling overhead and on summer evenings fireflies dart around. Light pollution is minimal and the sky is awash with stars.
Other Activities: Sight seeing, wine tours, olive oil and truffle tours
