A Stone built Victorian quarryman's cottage with great views along the Purbeck Hills, the headland and round the bay to the Isle of Wight. Sleeping 4/5. It is furnished to offer comfort and a 'home from home' feel, centrally heated and double glazed throughout. A weeks entertainment can be reached on foot from your door. An elevated position, yet an easy gradient 7 minute walk along the hillside to the main shopping area and Steam Railway and under 10 minutes on foot to the safe sandy beach. While some of the local terrain may prove hard going for push chairs, the cottage is literally surrounded by footpaths which give access to the coastal path, Durlston Country Park and The Priest way. The location makes this a base which can offer something for most.

Swanage boasts not only a traditional family atmosphere but activities for the more adventurous. Safe swimming from a sandy, blue flag, beach with Punch and Judy is balanced by the diving school and climbing opportunities. The Swanage Steam Railway runs a regular service, even out of season, to the village of Corfe with its National Trust run Castle. There is a tourist information centre, heritage centre, the Mowlen Theatre, 18 hole pitch and putt, public tennis courts, Sea front public gardens and a bowling green. Boat trips to sightsee or visit Bournemouth, Poole or Brownsea Island, fishing trips and a diving school can all be located on the pier. There are 2 supermarkets and plenty of little shops and restaurants, and all these activities start no more than 10 to 15 minutes walk from the cottage. The area is renowned for its walks and the coastal path runs through the town and Durlstone Country Park with its dolphin watch and visitors centre.

Additional information about rental rates

  • Weekly rates for 2010 £325 min £600 max. Weekend, midweek and late bookings welcomed usually out of main holiday periods.

    Linen is included in weekly lets and subject to a further charge on short lets.

    Gas (central heating and cooking) and electricity are included in the rental charge but we request occupiers consider the effects of their use on the environment.

    Entry 6pm Exit 2pm Friday on weekly bookings unless out of main season.

    A refundable deposit of £150 is required against damages or exceptional costs incurred.

    The house will be in a clean and tidy condition, and hirers are expected to leave it in a similar state at the end of their stay.

Main season rentals run Friday 6pm to Friday 2pm, late arrivals are catered for. Out of main season we are happy to take bookings for weekends (usually 3 night minimum) or mid week bookings (usually 4 nights). If we have late availability we may be willing to negotiate on price.

The cottage is on 3 floors having a twin bedroom and a second sitting room on the 2nd floor and a large double bedroom on the third floor. The stairs to the first floor are fairly steep, open plan and not gated but there is a hand rail. The bathroom with bath and proper shower over is ground level. The kitchen is well equipped, there is a small garden and a patio front and rear, garden furniture and BBQ. There is televisions, a DVD player, video, radio, board games and books for all ages. The cottage is in a quiet area surrounded by footpaths giving access to walks over the Downs to the Coastal Path and Durlston Country Park. There is plenty of free parking in the quiet residential roads surrounding the property.

The local 'Arkrights' stores is 3 minutes away and rents DVD's etc for a small deposit. The local pub (3 minutes) serves meals and often has musicians at weekends (as do many of the pubs in the town). Swanage is home to a diving school and cliff climbing takes place in the area along with many other adventure activities. There are a host of places to visit in the area, good bird spotting sites, the Tank Museum at Bovington, Monkey World, open topped buses to Bournemouth, boats to hire, fishing trips the options seem endless. The town has many restaurants. Along with current timetables, much information is supplied in an indexed folder at the property and there is a local tourist information centre on the sea front.

Excellent base for exploring the Dorset coastline

I first visited this cottage in November 2008 with my father. We were looking for a comfortable place to stay that we could easily reach by public transport and we found it. We travelled down from London on the train to Wareham and then took the bus to Swanage through pretty countryside, passing by Corfe Castle. The cottage was just a few minutes' walk from the bus stop.

We were very pleased to find the cottage to be spacious, clean and especially warm (having found in the past that winter heating in self-catering cottages can often be inadequate). The views from the lounge and both bedrooms are stunning. I enjoyed the stay so much that I decided I must bring my partner and returned with him the following spring.

The coastal walks from the doorstep to Worth Matravers, Durlston Head and Studland are breathtaking. The Square and Compass Pub in Worth Matravers and the Ocean Bay Restaurant in Swanage are also particularly recommended.

We certainly hope to be back again and again.

My family stayed at this cottage in Swanage for a week. It's a lovely location - quiet and peaceful as it's a little way out of the centre of the town.
The cottage itself has a real home-from-home feel and has everything that you need for your holiday.
The owners were exremely helpful and nothing was too much trouble.
We had a super holiday and will definitely return again.
