About Mrs Louise Nixon

I am married (30 years) have a grown up Son and a Labrador Retriever named Zac ! I love holidays abroad especially Cruises and peaceful breaks at my Lodge in Scotland with country and coastal walks. I love walking my dog Zac and he also loves going on his holidays at Heron Lodge. I am a keen gardener and love pottering around and attending my plants ! I also have another hobby of making mohair Bears which I make as presents for family and friends for their Special Occasions! I also take pride in my rental business and ensure a warm welcome for all my guests whom stay @ Heron Lodge!

Mrs Louise Nixon purchased this chalet in 2006

Why Mrs Louise Nixon chose Dumfries

This was purchased from my Aunt and Uncle whom owned Cairnyard House and developed the grounds into a small private holday lodge site. For many years we had visited and stayed with them and loved the friendly area of Dumfries and Galloway. The lodge being an ideal selfcatering base, for a peaceful and enjoyable time to spend with family and friends, giving time to unwind and relax from the hectic pace of everyday life!

There is so much to offer for everyone of all ages, lots to see and do for small families, teenage families, mature couples alike!

What makes this chalet unique

Peaceful rural setting with breath taking views of Mabie Forest.

High end Self Catering Holiday Lodge Sleeps 4 People.

Can be Rented Any Time of Year.

Spacious , with modern comfort and style - Cosy and Warm in Winter.

Ideal Self Catering Base in which to explore the Dumfries and Galloway Area, lots to see and do.

Take up your hobby and interest, like Mountain Biking (7 Staines closeby) Fishing,Bird Watching,Walking, Historial Places of interest,Robert Burns, castles and manors.

Great place for small familes, lots to see and so Mabie Farm Park.

Award winning Organic Farm Shop Loch Arthur 1 mile away and Kilnford Farm Shop for Organic Meats.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We enjoyed our stay at Heron Lodge very much. We loved the peaceful woodland setting and watching the birds feed on the bird table each morning.

We took our pet dog and he loved his walks and being able to sit out in the rear garden and sun himself.

The lodge was well equipped , clean and well presented. A great base to take in the surrounding area of Dumfries and Galloway.

We will definitely return and have already told our friends about this little gem ! For the price we paid we got more than we ever expected , never stayed anywhere so well equipped as Heron Lodge and owner very helpful on our booking.

very quiet area which was great. Accommodation was ok, electric meter was greedy for the heating !

Wasn't keen on the plastic plants in every room that harbour dust.

There was a wooden slatted floor mat in the bathroom which had a piece loose on it and could have been dangerous as it was held on with fine nails and the towel rail was hanging off the wall.

Not the sort of place we would use for a holiday but it was convenient for us as our new bungalow wasn't ready and we had already sold our houses, so it was a last minute booking, however, for people wanting to explore the area it would be a good location to stay.

Owner's Response: Heron Lodge did come in handy for these people that were stranded and in need of immediate accommodation as their new property was unavailable to move into re house move. On holiday myself at the time, I managed to arrange for these people to have immediate access within a few hours notice. They booked an 8 night stay and then coming to the end of this period contacted yet again to ask for a further weeks stay which was duly accommodated. My cleaner was also very understanding in that I had to cancel her services and rebook for the following week at short notice. It may not be somewhere in which as these guests say would spend their holidays- but none the less unfortunately, they were not on holiday, but under different circumstances of a stressful house move. Many past guests have had a wonderful time and holiday @: Heron Lodge and appreciate the lovely area of Dumfries and Galloway and many guests are repeat visitors. Granted Heron Lodge is not the Ritz but none the less is a well equipped holiday lodge for the purpose of a selfcatering holiday break. Some peoples perceived idea of what they have paid is not going to get them 6* accommodation on a budget price paid of £30 per night charged. There is obviously plenty of choice in the surrounding area including some luxury Hotels whom command their high price accordingly ....which is the choice you make. The small problems encountered in the bathroom will be attended to but would have been nice for these people to communicate to me whilst staying or on exit.

Fantastic lodge in great location

A great lodge in a fantastic area, very well equipped, and comfortable only slight drawback was the site looked a little run down but the lodge itself was great, perfect location for mountain biking in Mabie forest, a little far from Glasgow for our trips to C/wealth games

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review of Heron Lodge. Glad you had a great stay and action packed holiday @ Heron Lodge and trips up to see the Commonwealth Games ! Indeed Heron Lodge is around 90 minutes reach of Glasgow and can be travelled on one of the most scenic motorways of the UK and also Loch Lommond and Edinburgh can be reach around a 2 hour drive away. Scotland is indeed a large country and Dumfries is only 35 minute drive from Gretna Green and the border of England. The size of Scotland is often not appreciated or anticipated by guests, but none the less travelling from A to B is often enjoyable with the scenary and quieter roads making driving around a more pleasurable experience with the ability of further a field day trips to its popular cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh and all they have on offer as a full and enjoyable day trip! Hope to welcome you both back for a return visit real soon. KR Louise Owner of Heron Lodge

Lovely property, best we have stayed in.

  • 3 of 5

Lovely property, best we have stayed in and we had a wonderful stay - perfect location for children however,......

We had hoped to visit again as we enjoyed it so much but, now put off by argument today about our £50 damage deposit being retained - on our final morning the nappy of our 15month old son leaked slightly onto the top sheet and quilt cover on the bed, (which on occasions happens at home.) We immediately stripped the bed to ensure no stain on the quilt itself but, did not put the bed covers in the washing machine as it clearly asks you not to do this in the property information pack which we followed to the letter.

My husband today was notified that the £50 deposit would be retained in order to replace all the sheets as cleaner claimed that the sheets could not be washed- this is ridiculous!! the staining was minimal and would have come out on single wash in a washing machine and despite my husband offering to cover cost of any additional laundry bill (which would be nowhere near a charge of £50) this was rejected and it insisted upon that a cost of £50 be incurred.....totally unacceptable and very upsetting as we made sure to leave the property exactly as we found it and followed the exit instructions and hence, did not attempt ourselves to wash the sheets before we left.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay @ Heron Lodge........... A small Security Bond is taken to ensure that respect is taken by clients during their stay at my holiday home. I have been renting out my holiday home since 2006 and have only had a couple of occasions were the Security Bond has not been refunded during these 7 years of renting- this being one of them. I was informed by my cleaner that on entry to do her usual clean to make ready for the next guests, she was unfortunately greeted with the fact that human excrement was left on the double bed linen. She was most upset and had telephoned me to explain that on laundry of bedding there was still staining present. I instructed her to repeat wash the bed linen but unfortunately the stain could still be seen. Therefore, replacement bed linen has been purchased for future guests that stay and hence the non-return of the Security Bond which has gone towards such replacement. I am at a loss as to why the family did not contact me firstly to report the incident, and why common sense was not used to wash the bed linen concerned in the washer provided at the lodge as soon as the incident occurred that way the stain would have come out no doubt ? Under normal circumstances we do not expect our clients on exit to clean the bed linen used, but from one human being to another I do not think it fine to exit a property without contacting the owner and at least to report this incident as would be normal courteousness. I unfortunately, was the one that had to contact them directly and on a full explanation to this ladies husband by myself, he had accepted that the Security Bond would not be refunded in this case.
