Photos and Description of the Lunac vacation farmhouse rental

Behind the distinctive arched wooden gates of 'Les Portails' feast your eyes on the rolling hills of the Aveyron countryside & absorb its natural beauty and tranquillity. The large garden is mostly laid to grass puctuated with a variety of fruit trees, which as well as offering fruits in their season, provide welcome shade. 'Les Portails' is a converted farmhouse with its own open sided barn & over half an acre of garden. The house has been carefully restored & whilst retaining many original features, such as exposed beams in most rooms, & furnished substantially in local traditional style it offers comfortable accommodation for 8. A great place to relax & unwind, or have an active holiday if you prefer!

The farmhouse has a 'pigeonnier' a typical feature in this part of France. There is no accommodation in the pigeonnier & no longer any pigeons in it, but it is very attractive and dates from times when pigeon droppings were sold for good profit! The private swimming pool is for your use; it is not shared & not overlooked. Theground floor terrace has a furnished eating area. The first floor south facing terrace has dining for 8. Large secluded garden overlooking beautiful, unspoilt countryside. Easy access to low cost airports. Excellent for walking, canoe/kayaking, tennis, swimming locally. The area is rich in historic, geographical & geological sites. There arecolourful local markets& wonderful local food & wine. Restuarants to suit all tastes & pockets are within easy reach. 8 miles from the beautiful village of Najac and about the same distance from the fortified town of Villefranche de Rouergue.

Accessible directly from the garden, the kitchen has a traditional fireplace with a wood burning stove, a large dining table and chairs. The kitchen was completly refitted in 2012 with an induction hob, large electic oven, dishwasher, washing machine & granite worksurfaces. There is also a large fridge and a further free standing combination oven with microwave and grill. There is also another fridge/freezer in the'cave'. The kitchen is very well supplied with ample crockery, pans, bakeware, glasses and kitchen equipment even for the most enthusiastic of cooks! There is a food processor,a hand blender & elactric whisk. You can even make your own pasta with a machine, if you really want!

The master bedroom opens off the Kitchen/Dining Room, with its own window onto the garden. This room has a double bed, wardrobe & bedside tables. The en-suite bathroom is fully tiled and has a bath with shower attachment, basin, bidet and WC.

Accessible via a staircase from the kitchen, the sittingroom has beautiful views over the garden & hillsides beyond. There is also double sofa bed in the lounge offering flexible accommodation. There is a digital HD TV, with satellite channels in many languages, a DVD player , & a pioneer sterio system, which you can link to the TV for surround sound.

On the south side of the room a doorway leads to the terrace. This has an external staircase leading to the garden. There is a full set of patio furniture for dining.

A corridor, opening off the sittingroom leads to Bedrooms 2 and 3. A travel cot ,highchair & stair gate are available. Bedroom 2 has a double bed. Bedroom 3 is a large room with a double & two single beds. Both rooms have generous storage.

The upstairs shower room is fully tiled. It has a WC, wash hand basin and enclosed shower.

Home from home

5 of 5
Submitted: July 22, 2012 Stayed: June 2012
We have just returned from a wonderful 2 week stay at 'Les Portails', a wonderful retreat in rural France. It was everything we hoped it would be, peaceful with beautiful views and the farmhouse was extremely well equipped.

So many places to visit, 2 weeks was not long enough! Some of our favourite places included Villefranche (particularly the Thursday market), Cordes, Narjac and Belcastle. My daughter and I went horse riding just outside Narjac, highly recommended.

Plenty of great places to eat, however it was nice just to shop at the local supermarket and eat at Les Portails with a nice glass of local wine staring at the view!

The swimming pool was fantastic and what a lovely garden, very private and plenty of shade if required.

I highly recommend Les Portails, a lovely home oozing with French character. All the instructions are very clear and you will have everything you need.

Thank you for a lovely holiday.

Delightful Holiday Location

5 of 5
Submitted: May 21, 2011 Stayed: May 2011
This was our 7th visit to Les Portails in 20 years - which speaks for itself!
As soon as one opens the impressive gates one enters a charmed world. Completely private and secluded, yet with wonderful uninterrupted views over miles of undulating hillsides, the house and garden offer a most relaxing experience. At the same time there is plenty of activity to savour within easy driving distance. Local towns and villages are exquisite - too many to mention all, but Najac, Cordes and the (Thursday) market town of Villefranche are a must. Walking, fishing, kayaking and golf are among local activities to suit all ages. The golf course at Albi is superbly manicured, at Rodez it is more rugged but also with great views; both towns also have splendid cathedrals worth a visit, as is the Lautrec museum in Albi.
The house is charming, immaculate and fully equipped so one can enjoy bbq's in the garden or cooking (provisions from Villefranche are of the highest quality). There are many excellent options for eating out - our current favourite for a real treat is the Oustal del Barry at Najac. The owners, and previous guests, have left comprehensive information about all these activities, indeed the customer service and helpful information provided by the owners is second to none.

All in all this is a delightful home in which to spend one's French holiday, and we have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone who enjoys or wishes to sample the French countryside.

Owner's Response: It is great to have people, who have stayed here as often as you. You obviously enjoy our holiday home as much as you do! Thank you so much.

An Excellent Stay

5 of 5
Submitted: September 30, 2010 Stayed: September 2010
Les Portails was as advertised - well equipped, comfortable and peaceful, with excellent facilities and delightfully situated. The owners were very responsive to enquiries and were commendably prompt in returning the damage and breakages deposit.

We found Les Portails it an ideal base for a two-couple holiday in late September 2010.
The directions and the instruction book were comprehensive and clear, and the pool was delightful. The wood-burning stove performed excellently on the (only) two chilly evenings we experienced, and the hot water system coped well with unlimited baths and showers for four.

We alternated between sunny, lazy days by the pool (which included sightings of buzzards) and expeditions to the neighbouring towns and villages.

The Villefranche Thursday-morning market is not to be missed – and neither is L’Assiette Gourmand restaurant (close to Villefranche church) where we had an excellent unstinted dinner - very good value at €165 for 4.

Najac is a must – incredibly photogenic mediaeval town and chateau. The steep ascent to the latter is well worthwhile (and serves to generate appetite and thirst, both of which were enjoyably satisfied at the Salamander restaurant).
Cordes, to the south offers similar vertical challenges and rewards, and Figeac, to the north also warrants a visit.
The grottes at Peche-Merle and Foissac are impressive.
For a full day out (90 minutes’ drive each way, and some challenging mountain hairpins on arrival) the Tarn Gorges can be recommended.

Altogether recommended a thoroughly enjoyable holiday.

Excellent base for exploring

The house lives up to its description and is very comfortable, well equipped and maintained. The views from the first floor terrace are beautiful and it provides a good vantage point from which to watch the wide variety of birdlife. It is very peaceful and I have rarely seen so many stars in the night sky.
There are plenty of places to visit. We particularly liked Sauveterre-de-Rouergue and market day at St-Antonin-Noble-Val, but just driving through the countryside is a delight and traffic almost non existent.
The owners are very helpful and quick to respond to questions.
I have no hesitation in recommending the property to others.
