Claviers is a charming medieval hamlet, famous as the regional resistance centre in the war. It has a boulangerie, post office, general store/newsagent, two bars and two restaurants, with €12 lunches. Not fine gastronomy, but great with a pichet of chilled Rose. There are also several starred restaurants nearby. The small market is on Saturday, but serious marketeers drive 20 minutes to Fayence, Draguignan or the Marche Paysan for the freshest, most delicious fruit, veg, meat and fish anywhere. Even the supermarkets have excellent local produce here! Gliding, riding, tennis, walking, canyoning and even skiing are all nearby, and either play golf or enjoy a great cocktail at Four Seasons(20 mins). Nearest beaches are Frejus (30 mins), or Ste Maxime(35 mins), then by ferry 15 mins to St Tropez Good vineyards for tasting and buying are easy to find. Nice or Toulon Airport are 1hr, with Marseilles, Nimes and even Avignon not much more. TGV/Motorail to Frejus, or Car/ferry is easy.

Additional information about rental rates

  • The house, the garden, the pool and its surrounds are designed and finished to the highest 'Cote Sud' standards by award-winning designers and architects.
The garden is fully planted, and much of the garden was designed by TV and Sunday Times garden writer James Alexander-Sinclair, and the garden architecture by Alexander Jackson. Payment may be made in any currency, within reason, and arrangements for this can be discussed with us. We ask for 50% of the rental to be paid on booking and the remainder no less than 4 weeks prior to start of rental period. We are afraid that we also need to ask you for a cheque as a guarantee against damages for £400/€500 before the rental period, which we will tear up as soon as Magali assures us that all is well!
Finally, whilst we do not specify UK School half-term dates above, we normally charge a premium of £200 per week for these periods.
  • The pool has heating available, but due to the cost of running it, we have to ask for €300 per week, if you wish to have it on. We find that it really only needs to be on in the shoulder months, and personally we only have it on from mid-October till the end November, and again over Easter, till the sun warms it up in May.

Notes: The house was completed recently to the very highest standards, with extensive award-winning designer inputs. The British owners built the house as their 'Grand Design Abroad', and the garden has now matured nicely. The house itself is very elegant and roomy, very easy to live in,and is built on a woody slope, which gives it such stunning views. Many children, and several octogenarians, have already stayed, with no problems so far. The infinity swimming pool 'drops away' down the slope of the garden to give a full panoramic view across the valley and surrounding mountains. The pool has heating available, but this is really only required in the shoulder months(at extra cost, we're afraid) A brand new top-end Weber gas barbecue is provided and next to the pool ,there is a 'summer kitchen' with running hot water, kettle etc, a fridge for your drinks. And also a loo. Please enjoy, on arrival, our gift of a 5-litre box of excellent local Rose. It awaits you in the fridge

Further details for this vacation villa rental in Fayence, France

Cleaning and general: The house will have been thoroughly prepared for your arrival, and Magali will come in every Saturday (at our cost!) to do some cleaning during your stay. Please let us know if you want her to come in more often, and we can help make arrangements. The house is very easy to keep clean with stone floors throughout, and a Hoover, mops etc are all to be found in the utility room, behind the kitchen. Any phone numbers you may need (plumber, electrician etc) are to be found in the house book. Please take your rubbish to the nearest communal bins on the road above the house, and the recycling areas. If you do this frequently, it makes life easier, as we have found! Please try to leave the house as clean and tidy as possible, since there is often a very short time between departures and arrivals. Fiona, who is English but lives in the village, looks after the garden and may also visit you to mow lawns or do small garden jobs, but she will take care not to disturb your peace and quiet!

Pool: Magali's husband, Patrick, looks after the pool and will visit the house once or twice a week during your stay, depending on weather conditions. He will do all the necessary to keep the pool looking sparkling, and if you wish to offer him a glass of Pastis, or Rose, he is always ready for a chat about Rugby, Politics or the heat! An infinity pool requires no additional attention. Patrick's number is in the house book and he will usually be able to come quickly if there is any type of pool problem....or indeed most other types of problem as well! Heating is available at an extra charge of €200 per week, but is only really needed in the 'shoulder months'. Please let us know if you want it, so that we can put it on in time for your arrival.

Food, wine and spirits: You will find on arrival a 5 litre box of the excellent local Rose in the fridge in the Utility room. Please enjoy this, as our welcoming gift. You will also find both spirits and most of the basic food requirements ready for you (Oil, salt, pepper, etc), and we try to operate this on an 'honesty' basis, so if you find that for instance the Vodka has mysteriously 'evaporated' during your stay, please top it up. You will be amazed and delighted how cheap Spirits are compared to UK. In the House book, you will find pretty comprehensive details of restaurants, vineyards, supermarkets, markets, good local shops etc.

Golf: We are not golfers ourselves, but many of our friends and renters talk very positively about the courses nearby....varying from the two Championship courses at the Four Seasons resort in Fayence, to the excellent and somewhat cheaper, St Endreol, at the end of the Vallee d'Esclans. Both of these are about 20 minutes away. Full details of these and another course about 30 minutes away in the mountains, which apparently is also excellent if energetic with magnificent views, can be found in the House book on arrival. The best golfing months are usually any time except July and August, when it can get pretty hot and the courses are full of seasonal visitors. Whilst it can of course rain a bit in almost any month, our golfing friends have so far had excellent golf in February, May, and October. Out of season, we are also happy to help you take advantage of the cheaper flights, by renting out, if available, from midweek to midweek or for long weekends.

Other Activities: Table tennis, Board and Pool games. Gliding at Fayence (20 mins), Skiing 1 hour.

We had our first ever renters in July this year, and this is what they said..........'We are back in the UK after the most fabulous holiday. You have the most lovely place right next to the most friendly and overwhelming village - how did you find Claviers? It is such a wonderful place. Your house was home from home, but with extra space and quality furnishings. You should be very proud.
We made many friends in our time in Claviers, and the atmosphere was tremendous......the magician/singer, and the lovely old man with all the history of the Resistance in the area. Our girls were made to feel very welcome.
Thankyou from our hearts, and hope we can book the house again - perhaps next year?'
(We promise all this is genuine!!!)

A beautiful home - a magical holiday

The Lynwoods Reading
Review Submitted: September 27, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
We loved our holiday at Le Mas de Piol it was truly magical. The photos are good but they really don't show how lovely the villa really is. We spent 2 weeks there this summer and it was our best holiday ever.

The villa is beautifully decorated with lovely furnishings, paintings and ceramics - you really feel like you are staying in a home from home. We felt very privileged to be allowed to share it. The pool is fantastic - we all spent a lot of time in it or near it and there are plenty of sunbeds and extras. The owners description is all that it says and more and they were wonderful at keeping in touch with us - sending directions, recommendations on flights and even giving good local tips on where to find a birthday cake for our daughter. There is a huge central living space where you can all come together to eat, watch films, play games (there is a good selection) with the bedrooms off in different directions so that you can escape from each other too - there is plenty of space to spread out. There are plenty of towels and all the silly things like sugar, oil, salt etc are there. It is like staying at a friends but your friend doesn't happen to be there. There is plenty of information about what to do, where to eat etc., The local 'staff' Magali and Patric are great - not too intrusive and very forgiving of poor French! The village and surroundings are beautiful and you don't really need to venture out apart from to stock up on food but you can still easily get to Cannes or Nice or the stunning scenery of the Gorges du Verdon. The roads take a little bit of getting used to but I'm a bit of a wimp but apart from that It's perfect - we're going back next year and wish we could stay there forever.
