We are an Anglo-Italian family and we have two twin boys who are totally bilingual. We live in England but whenever we can we love to spend time at Villa Pieroni where we have many happy memories. The villa is certainly the ideal place to enjoy family and friends.

Mrs Teresa Ingham Brooke purchased this villa in 2002

We were looking for a house near Lucca and we loved the villa at first sight. The house is grand, spacious but very cosy at the same time. The beautiful terrazza is the ideal place to have meals and drinks late at night. The sound of the cicados in the summer and the fire flies in May and June make the place magical. We have spent there many happy evenings simply talking, listening to music, relaxing.... A bit about its history. Villa Pieroni was built in 1911 by Giuseppe Pieroni for his wife. His family developed close links with the Kennedys and many other high profile people. At the villa we have extracts from a book about his life. Villa Pieroni has many stories to tell. During the Second World War became an American HQ when the Allies had broken through the nearby Gothic Line.

The area is incredibly beautiful and caters for every taste. If you don't like traveling too far you can enjoy little trips to our local beautiful medieval towns like Barga, Castelnuovo and many others. If you like nature there are lovely walks in the nearby mountains where you can enjoy watching stunning views and wildlife. The cities of Lucca and Florence are very close and the white sandy beach of Viareggio is nearby. The area is justly famous for its Slow Food and there are a lot of restaurants or 'cantine' where you can taste food with a glass of delicious wine. Local people are lovely and we have been fortunate to find a charming representative for the house, and a really helpful local guide, too.

THE PERFECT ITALIAN VILLA.

  • 5 of 5
Villa Pieroni exceeded all our expectations. Although the photos show the beauty of the Villa and gardens, nothing had prepared us for the thrill of the size and scale of the rooms in the property.

With a family of 11 to accommodate, including five couples and a toddler, we discovered we had lots of space to relax, cook, eat and laugh together, or seek private corners to read or chat.

The Villa is well appointed with absolutely nothing lacking for the perfect summer vacation. The house was clean, well maintained and very comfortable, with fresh flowers and wine to welcome guests. The decor is wonderfully authentic, with original cabinets furnishings and tiled floors, with marble staircases, providing true luxury. All facilities were modern and efficient, with the exception of an old television. Great plumbing, endless hot water and free internet made a lovely change from previous villas. The housekeeper was always available to answer any queries when they initially arose, and to assist with local information.

A local taxi service was excellent, and in addition, we also hired cars for some of the time, and used the local train service to Lucca, which was an adventure, with the subsequent bicycle hire. The luxury of a driver to meet the plane in Pisa was desirable after a long and tiring journey and gave us time to settle into the house, before setting out to the nearby villages to shop.

The location was suburb, with beautiful views from every window, a residue of snow still on nearby mountains, but the days were hot and sunny. We walked many of the local tracks, and for some of the family, a daily early coffee at the Station, lunch in Castelnuovo de Garfagna, and dinner in Barga nearby, became a delightful habit.

The local generi alimentary in Barga became a daily necessity for the picnics organised on the walks or excursions. There was an excellent large supermarket five minutes drive from the Villa, but the local shops in Barga provided wonderful local produce.

It was a truly memorable, magical holiday, enjoyed by all the family, who quickly made Villa Pieroni "our Italian home".

MORE BEAUTIFUL THAT WE COULD HAVE HOPED FOR!

  • 5 of 5
I spent many hours researching Tuscan villas to rent for a 25th anniversary celebration trip. We needed one large enough to accommodate up to 10 people as we'd invited four other couples to join us for the week. Villa Pieroni seemed to fit all our criteria: it was in the northwestern area of Tuscany we'd settled on, was close enough to a village, and yet away enough to enjoy the quiet Tuscan countryside, was reasonably priced, and it looked beautiful in pictures. Many of the villas I found in our price range were large, might have a good location or pretty exterior, but the furnishings looked shabby and uncomfortable. As I looked at the pictures of Villa Pieroni, I thought it might be too good to be true, but after speaking on the phone with the owner, Teresa, we decided to risk it and hope for the best. When we arrived and saw that the pictures didn't even begin to capture it's beauty, I was so grateful. Teresa was very helpful throughout the whole process, answering every question quickly and linking us up with local services we might be interested in while there. She recommended a local chef who came to the villa and did a 4 hour cooking school with our group that was fantastic. And they employ a local representative, Paola, who manages the property and any issues while staying there. Paola was delightful as well, even coming over on the evening of our anniversary celebration to take some group photos for us. In addition to each having our own bedroom and bathroom, there were plenty of common spaces that allowed all of us to spread out and be together or alone as much as desired. We spent many hours on the large terrace off the kitchen that overlooked a wooded area leading up to the mountains in the distance - stunning. The kitchen was equipped with everything needed to prepare even our cooking school meal, though it did seem a little small of a space for such a large villa. We found our way to local towns easily, and especially enjoyed exploring the medieval town of Barga. We were able to catch the regional train at the station 5 minutes from the villa - it connected to most major cities with connections at larger stations, and helped us avoid having to drive everywhere.(We traveled by train to Florence and Cinque Terre.) You will definitely want a rental car, as not much is in walking distance - to us the seclusion and quiet of the location was worth it. I would go back to Villa Pieroni in a heartbeat!

WONDERFUL WEEK!

  • 5 of 5
What a magical week at Villa Pieroni. All ten of us agree that everything there exceeded our expectations. A lovely, clean house; ample off-street parking for our two minivans; beautiful views from the terrace; Paola is helpfully on-site to resolve any problems (we had none); Nadia's exceptional meals, cooking school and delightful humor; a refreshing swimming pool for the end of a day of touring - a home away from home. I would definitely recommend Villa Pieroni.

Breakfast on the terrace each morning and drinks upon our return each day became our special "terrace time" visiting with our fellow travelers.

There is a convenient supermarket nearby, as well as smaller markets; wonderful restaurants in Barga are only 4 to 5 km away; closeby touring of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana and Castiglione di Garfagnana is an easy 20-30 minute drive. Lucca is less than an hour away.

I hope to return with my family when the grandkids are a little older.

Historic and luxurious villa in an excellent location. Perfectly placed for sight-seeing, hiking or just relaxing. Had a great and varied stay there which included visiting the local towns of Barga and Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, a day trip to Florence and walks in the local countryside. Villa is well-furnished and comfortable, with beautiful antique furniture and frescoes. Highly recommended.
