The Villa Amygdalia is a large three bedroomed Villa, completed in 2005 set on the hills overlooking Gavalahori with panoramic views of the Souda Bay. The Villa is set in a 4000 square metre plot with a backdrop of pine trees and almond bushes. It has a 40 square meter pool with a shallow paddling area and ample terraces for sun-bathing. It is close to the local regional centre of Vamos, a small traditional village with tavernas, small shops, bank (with cash machine) local bakery and health centre. A short drive will take you to the large sandy beaches of Kalives, Almirida or Plaka; all of these have sea-front Tavernas serving local fish and local Cretan specialties. The Villa is fully equipped including a fridge, dishwasher and a range of other electrical appliances having being previously let through one of the main high quality Villa letting companies. The dining and living areas open onto the patio which has tiled pergolas to give a shaded sitting or dining area.

Second time around!

Submitted: July 20, 2011 Stayed: July 2011
We stayed at the villa last year and it was so good we have just returned with friends this year. The villa has all the facilities you could possibly need and the views of both the bay and the mountains are very special. Particularly useful is the fact that it is a 20 minute walk into Vamos and a 15 minute walk down to Gavalochori (but a VERY hard climb back up!). As I personally love walking/keeping fit I was very happy to get up early each morning to walk into either place to buy bread and enjoy the calm and beauty of the morning as well as the chance to greet the locals! The villa is very clean and the pool absolutely brilliant. Both times we have stayed the next nearest villa has been unfinished and therefore deserted so a fantastically peaceful place to be. Both times we have used a small hire car but feel the track to the villa does merit a vehicle with good clearance underneath. Steve and Lyn who maintain the villa are really helpful (warning us of a taxi drivers strike on our return trip which could have affected our friends return journey) and very pleasant. Great welcome pack on arrival.
Vamos has some really nice tavernas (we liked the one near the amphitheatre) and we visited the Art bar several times. We really liked the taverna in Gavalochori that is on the Vamos road and has a fountain playing in the seating area. We discovered some snorkelling opportunities in Almiryda from the white pebble beach (as you face the sea the far left of the resort past the seafront tavernas) which would be ideal for children who can swim ...just bring jelly shoes/ beach shoes as there are some sea urchins around. Walked Samaria gorge last year (picked up from Vamos and returned there)..brilliant!
We normally never stay anywhere twice so the fact we have (and will, I think, want to return again sometime in the future) is testament to the quality of this villa and its situation.

Spacious, well-fitted out villa

5 of 5
Submitted: October 14, 2009 Stayed: August 2009
We had two happy weeks at this villa in August with 4 children aged from 5 to 11, who were in the pool dawn til dusk. The standard of fit out and furnishings is very high and the villa was well-cleaned and cared-for. Air-con is only in 2 of the 3 bedrooms, but at least the one without is on the ground floor & can be kept cooler with the shutters closed. Kitchen had all the necessary of equipment to self-cater and plenty of space to eat inside or outside. A car is essential. It's not that far into Vamos, but a long way to walk in the heat. This is a lovely part of Crete with good access both to mountains and beaches and away from the main tourist centres.

Great villa with fabulous views

Submitted: September 7, 2009 Stayed: July 2009
We spent a wonderful 2 weeks at the villa with our four boys aged between 10 and 15. It's a truly beautiful spot, with breathtaking views and peace and quiet for the adults, and plenty of space and a great pool for the kids. There's often a lovely breeze too as you're basically nestled into the hillside. Beautiful beaches nearby and pretty quiet even in August!
The local villages have everything you need, supermarket, baker etc but you need a decent car as it's a little drive and the track to the villa is quite entertaining at times!
I would highly recommend it and would certainly go back. The villa has everything you need for a great holiday and is well maintained. The only thing I would change is that there's no air con in the third bedroom, which would be useful in August as it's so hot.

Our first visit to Crete

5 of 5
Submitted: September 5, 2009 Stayed: August 2009
This was our first villa holiday and our first visit to Crete and we were not disappointed. We had a fabulous holiday, and this was down to everything that is described in the villa details being accurate. It is a large and spacious villa, with the panoramic views being better than imagined. It was so peaceful with only the sheep/goat bells to be heard across the valley and the faint noise of village life below. The villa was spotless on arrival and well looked after throughout our fortnight (including pool cleaning). Would definitely recommend this property, we have two small children aged 5 & 2 and the steps down into the pool made it easy access for them. As the villa is just off the beaten track and you cannot walk to the local shops, a car is essential. Although the local beaches are nice and clean we would highly recommend visiting other beaches, especially Stavros and Falasarna. It is great to see that tourism hasn't spoilt this part of Crete and there are no fast food american restaurants, just your traditional tavernas. We would definitely consider returning to this lovely villa. Greek life is very laid back indeed!
