Charming 19th cent. renovated cottage (used to be a farmhouse) for up to 7 people (+ baby) in beautiful Upper Dordogne valley. Exceptional location with direct private access and frontage to river Dordogne (famous fly-fishing spot). Pets allowed (note: the property is not enclosed everywhere). Private heated swimming pool with security fences for sole useage, large grounds (2 acres), a petanque area. Quiet location but not isolated: in small hamlet between Argentat-sur-Dordogne (7 kms) and Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne (16 kms), the Riviera of the Limousin. Rental from Saturday 4 p.m. to Saturday 10 a.m. Look for late offers (pls contact us as we will always discount unbooked weeks 4 weeks before arrival). 10% discounts automatically apply on 2nd (and 3rd) week rental.   • Book for more than one week and get 10% off your second/third week rental price!
    Booking deposit: 25% of price. Security deposit cheque of 100 GBP at arrival (handed back at departure if OK). Balance payable 8 weeks or before prior to arrival or at booking time if within 8 weeks of rental date. Contract sent at booking request.
    Swimming pool: weekly charge of GBP15 for heating, NO CHARGE in high season (July and August) or when owners present.
    For rent: towel set (1 bath towel, 2 hand towels, 2 flannels): 4 GBP per person. Pool towel in pool season: 2 GBP per person. Bed Linen Included In Price.
    Mandates' services: 50 GBP for both Saturday change-over dates or 25 GBP if owner present ONE Sat.).
    Electricity standard charge: 0.08 euro (low hour rate)or 0.12 euro (high hour rate) for any Kwatt OVER 60 Kwatts included in weekly rental.
    Wood for stove: GBP 7 per week.
    Pets welcome (weekly charge 7 GBP) but need to be controlled as property is not completely fenced.

Owners (French hostess, British host with 2 children born in 91 and 93 and 2 Border Collies!) will let you know when you make your enquiry which dates they are going to be on site in the summer as the property comprises the cottage which is rented out and the converted barn which they use for themselves and do not rent out. The cottage comprises of 3 levels: Basement: 1 large room with ample storage facilities, a shower room with WC, and a laundry room (washing machine, dryer, iron and iron table provided). First floor: A large living room with regional features such as a fireplace (cantou) and bassiere (turned into a reading corner), a toilet room, a fully equipped kitchen and dining/eating room. Second floor: landing, 4 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, 1 separate WC. Swimming pool (heated) available from May to October. Flat weekly charge of GBP15 for heating, no charge for high season rentals (July and August) or when owners present.

When owners are not on site, there is an extra charge of GBP50 for mandates' services: cottage cleaning, bed making, welcoming you on arrival, pool and garden maintenance done by a local French couple.

We have been to this cottage three times now and it remains a favourite spot. This lovely cottage is extremely well located to explore the likes of Bordeaux, Sarlat and Rocamadour. There are some fantastic walks in the surrounding hills, as well as bike rides and canoe trips for the more adventurous. We have stayed here both with and without kids and it suits all. The fantastically kept gardens are wonderfull to relax in after a days excursion and the swimming pool is a great bonus. As a fly fisherman, you couldn't ask for more as the lovely Dordogne is at the bottom of the garden. We remain huge fans of Saulieres and look forward to the next time we stay.

Second Time Around!

My husband and I returned once again to the Martin's Riverside Retreat in Sauileres in September and three years later the magic is still there! Touring the picturesque French countryside, fab dining in nearby restaurants and a relaxing canoe ride on the Dordogne River was just as we remembered.
So many beautiful sites between just a few minutes to an hour or so away that our days were filled with trips to nearby Argentat, Beaulieu-sur-Durdogne, Collonges-la-Rouge, Rocamadour, the Cahors vineyards and so much more.
We found the cottage fully equiped to meet all our needs, even cooking several evening meals and relaxing with a fire in the evenings. One afternoon we played boules in the back property by the river and sunned around the pool - the garden being the perfect backdrop for a good book and glass of wine.
Look for us to return in the near future!

Relax, tour, or look for adventure

We've been going to France for about 10 years now and have never gone back to the same place twice, until now.

Anne-Marie (the owner) if in residence has always been most helpful and friendly and we hardly knew she was there most of the time.

The pool and gardens are lovely as is the house, though having British Television proved a little lethal as we felt too much at home at times!

There is plenty too do both on your door step (by car), canoeing, markets (day & evening), restaurants, walks, and a little further afield castles, water falls, and a beach (kids enjoyed it) at the resevoir about 15 miles north.

As a keen cyclist I found plenty of good challangening hills betwen 3 and 5 miles in length, both steep and others steady, and routes anywhere between 20 & 40 miles. I would definately like to go back a 3rd time in the years to come.

Our second visit to Les Saulieres

Another fabulous family holiday in this delightful cottage. Lived up to our previous visit in 2008. The cottage is well equipped and furnished tastefully. The pool, like last year, was a magnet not only for the kids, we enjoyed it just as much. Lots to do locally, Kayaking down the Dordogne, or fishing it from various locations., shopping and eating in nearby towns. Local markets are worth more than one visit. We found that the nearest one in Monceaux on Thursday evenings was different, as well as stalls, with local produce, including wines and aperitifs, there is a massive barbeque, where if you bring your own food, they will cook it for you, you can then picnic at one of the many tables provided. A coffee and croissant at Les Gabares on the Quay in Argentat is recommended. Les Saulieres is a wonderful location, and a superb holiday cottage, to which we will certainly return. The owners are very hospitable and we would recommend this holiday to friends and family.

Lovely Holiday

We spent a lovely, relaxing week at the farmhouse this summer. The farmhouse is spacious, clean, comfortable and well equipped with everything you need to self-cater. Anne-Marie was on site while we were there with her two dogs, Max & Minnie. Our children adored playing with the dogs and Ann-Marie was really helpful and friendly.

On the days where the weather was good, the children made the most of the swimming pool and loved playing with Max & Minnie. So much so, that they weren't interested in trying out any of the water sports available nearby. We did venture out to the local water park, but men must wear fitted swim trunks, not swim shorts, and unfortunately my husband didn't have any - worth bearing in mind if you think you may want to visit.

We had a couple of days which were rainy, but there were lots of games and books for the children, as well as the satellite TV, to keep them amused. We visited Collanges-la-Rouge which is very pretty with lots of shops to browse around and take shelter from the rain. Definitely worth a visit.

We made good use of the barbecue and the very well equipped kitchen, and with 2 supermarkets in Argentat, it was easy to stock up with some good food and wine to enjoy on those warm, relaxing evenings outside. If you want to have a break from self catering, you need to be prepared to drive to one of the towns/villages because there aren't any good restaurants in walking distance.

Overall, we had a lovely week and would happily recommend a stay here.
