The house is situated in a National Park and within about 15 minutes drive from the seaside village of Portbail and the town of St Sauveur le Vicomte. At Portbail there are safe sandy beaches , sailing and windsurfing and a good selection of bars an reasonably priced restaurants. Further up the coast are Denneville and the resort of Barneville Carteret both of which have safe beaches ,good restaurants and which are popular holiday destinations for French ,Dutch and German families. The village of Besneville is roughly a mile away and has a bakery, general store and butcher. There are supermarkets close by at St Sauveur and la Haie du Puits and the nearest garage is at Portbail.
For children who cannot resist horses there is a riding centre near the beach at Portbail .At St Sauveur le Vicomte there is kayaking and canoeing and there is a golf course near Barneville.
The house is within a one hour drive of the D Day landing beaches at Utah and Omaha .The British landing beaches at Arromanches are slightly further away.St Mere Eglise which was the first town in France to be liberated on D Day and which featured in 'The Longest Day' is about 45 minutes drive away.During the liberation the house was used by American soldiers and when renovating various bits of Jeep and cartridge cases came to light! Bayeux with its cathedral and tapistry and Mont St Michel (the eighth wonder of the world!) are about one and a half hours drive away.
Fishing enthusiasts have plenty of opportunities at Carteret and the house is in an ideal area for bike riding or simply a quiet country ramble.
