The peaceful Wensleydale village of Aysgarth is located in a walker's paradise close to popular Aysgarth Falls and remarkable Bolton Castle, which dates back to 1379. Aysgarth Falls have drawn visitors for over 200 years, including the famous Ruskin, Turner and Wordsworth, who all visited and enthused about the 'falls' remarkable beauty. Being a staging post in the 19th century, many travelers would make their way down to see the falls from the bridge. Today, many will distinguish the Upper Falls from the film Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. In the close by Freeholders' Wood, the ancient art of coppicing is still practiced, enabling visitors to find hazel, ash and wild cherry, as well as others. Carpeted with wildflowers in spring, the woodland is home to over 120 species. An exceptional holiday location for walkers, Aysgarth provides an ideal base from which to explore both Wensleydale and Swaledale, The beauty spots in the area include Aysgarth Falls, Semerwater, castles at both Bolton and Middleham and Hardraw Force, England's highest single drop waterfall at 99ft!
