Situated in a walkers' paradise close to Castle Bolton, Leyburn and the famous Aysgarth Falls is the tranquil Wensleydale village of Redmire. It is situated on the Wensleydale Railway, which features steam locomotives in the summer and has frequent special events. One of the finest preserved medieval castles in Yorkshire, Castle Bolton dates back to 1378. With its powerful towers and rectangular courtyard, much of the castle survived the orders to demolish famous Yorkshire castles, issued by Parliament in the Civil War. Close by, Carperby was a significant centre for Quakerism, and the biggest building today is the classically styled Friends Meeting House, overlooking the market cross and village green. Redmire's Village Pub serves excellent food and there is an outstanding range of facilities in the nearby market town of Leyburn. Swaledale and Arkengarthdale are both within easy reach from Redmire.
