The beautiful Teesdale village of Staindrop has always been associated with the fortunes of Raby Castle and its owners nearby. The Castle (open to the public) is one of the grandest in England. Enlarged and beautified over the centuries, the medieval heart remains and a 200 acre deer park and walled garden and add to the splendour. Staindrop provides interesting shops, cafes and pubs set round its long village green. 5 miles away is the bustling market town of Barnard Castle, with its castle, the Bowes Museum, and of course its wide range of shops and tea-rooms. Walkers will enjoy the abundance of walks around Teesdale.
