The charming, peaceful seaside village of Staithes, is something of an artist's dream with its cobbled streets and back alleys. Attractive houses and cottages are clustered around the old harbour, surrounded by enormous craggy cliffs on three sides, with a sheltered sandy beach nestled in the rocky coastline. Connections with Captain Cook, who was apprenticed to a draper near the harbour, are claimed by the village. A must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast, Staithes has a good variety of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Beautiful views of the town can be seen from the Cleveland Way which runs down from the cliffside to the sea's edge. Definitely a superb base to explore the Yorkshire Coast, while enjoying the larger resorts of Whitby or Scarborough and visiting the moorland villages of the North York Moors National Park.
