Slightly further afield lies Kielder Forest and Waters, excellent for fishing, horse riding and nature watching. Within a short drive is the lively city of Newcastle upon Tyne. About the area: Otterburn 5 miles; Newcastle upon Tyne 34 miles. The superb village of West Woodburn is set amidst the deep Rede Valley and was once a vital resting point in Roman times for travellers that were on route to Scotland from York. The village has a welcoming pub and a post office with basic supplies, visitors can also explore the remains of one of the outpost forts of Hadrian's Wall that is nearby. Just a short drive away is the historic village Otterburn, with its world renowned Woollen Mill and Shop and is popular with walkers and cyclists, whilst the beautiful Kielder Forest nearby affords excellent fishing, boating, horse riding and nature watching opportunities.
