Beaches: In Kalkan village there is only a pebble man-made beach however there are plenty of “Beach Clubs” which are open to non-members. They offer sun beds, swimming, water-sports, restaurant & bar facilities. There are 2 sandy beaches in the immediate vicinity of Kalkan. Kaputas being the first is only 6 km drive away east and found at the bottom of a ravine down approx. 100 steps but with the most beautiful turquoise sea. There are no facilities at Kaputas so you must take your own parasols. Patara is the second, part of a National Park and a 19 km drive to the west. Voted one of the world’s best beaches by The Times its 22 kms of pure white sand stretches as far as the eye can see, making it ideal for a day away from the holiday crowds. There is a restaurant and toilets. The beach is home to a protected species of turtle. Patara is also an ancient site with numerous interesting ruins. Historically it is known as the birthplace of St. Nicholas (Father Christmas) and Apollo.

Local Attractions: Travelling further afield and all easily accessible from Kalkan within Turkey’s Lycian region, there are the ancient sites of Xanthos (Kinik) the Lycian capital, and the single most important city 18 kms.north of Patara. Letoon 6 kms. farther on with its important religious buildings, and Tlos, Lycia’s longest inhabited city and many others. Saklikent, a narrow gorge about 300m high and 18 km. long and is accessed by a suspended wooden catwalk. Once you have crossed through the ice-cold water of the Xanthos River you can begin the journey uphill into the gorge. After an epic excursion there is an abundance of restaurants serving freshly cooked trout from local hatcheries and local delicacies to choose from for lunch. Kas (Antiphellos) a town about 30 minutes drive from Kalkan.This modern town has been built on an ancient site so while strolling around don’t be surprised if you come across ancient ruins or sarcophaguses.
