Piazza Navona. The most famous square of Baroque Rome stands on the site of Domitianus stadium and the name seems to derive from a popular corruption of the term for the competitive games in agone which were held here. From the times of Domitian on, the place was used almost exclusively for sports events, including the famous August regatta in which the participants wore the colours of the nobles and the civic clergy. Even now the feast of the Befana (January sixth) is celebrated there with a typical market.

Further details for this vacation apartment rental in Rome, Italy

Apartment area: Piazza Navona The most famous square of Baroque Rome stands on the site of Domitianus stadium and the name seems to derive from a popular corruption of the term for the competitive games in agone which were held here. From the times of Domitian on, the place was used almost exclusively for sports events, including the famous August regatta in which the participants wore the colours of the nobles and the civic clergy. Even now the feast of the Befana (January sixth) is celebrated there with a typical market. But the real attraction of the square is the famous Fountain of the Four Rivers by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, dated 1651, and thanks to which the artist gained the admiration and protection of the Pope then in office, Innocent X. The rivers represented in the fountain are the Danube, the Ganges, the Nile and the Rio de la Plata. They are arranged on a steep rocky reef from which a Roman obelisk taken from the Circus of Maxentius daringly rises up into the air.

Popular tradition has it that the sculptures on the fountain symbolize the rivalry between Bernini and Borromini, who were the most important artists in 17th century Rome. Innocent X at first had commissioned the work to Borromini, but Bernini obtained the commission by corrupting Donna Olimpia, the pope's sister-in-law (he gave her a silver copy of the project). Borromini built the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone, which stands in front of Bernini's Fountain. For this reason the personified Rivers seem to cover their faces, not to see Borromini's horrible work. In line with the Fountain of the Four Rivers are the Fountain of the Moor, in front of the Palazzo Pamphilij and the Fountain of Neptune, formerly of the Calderari, at the northern end of the square.

Great place to see Rome from

Review Submitted: June 9, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
We had a cosy but brilliant holiday here with 6 adults and 1 child. The location does not get much better than here, so close to walk to all the top tourist attractions and restaurants. Since it is in a back street it is nice and quiet too.

The description was slightly miss leading since it only has one bedroom not two, the living room doubles as the second bedroom. The bedroom is large enough to sleep 5 people (2 double beds and one single bed on the floor) with another double bed in the living room. The owner was friendly, accommodating and kept the place nice and clean.

Access to the apartment is up two flights of narrow winding stairs, so you will need to be comfortable with a small climb. It would be a great place for a families, even up to three or four kids. It was a short ride on bus no. 40 from Termini Station to near Ponte St. Angelo. Very close to the Vatican, only a short walk across the river.

Wonderful Trip- Great Accomodations

Brookie Cookie San Jose, CA, USA
Review Submitted: November 11, 2009 Date of Stay: November 2009
The apartment is as advertised. We arrived late at night (11:30pm or so) from our flight and were welcomed by the owner, Luigi. He was very accommodating, explaining to us about the neighborhood and the workings of the apartment. Later on in the trip when we needed help booking an early morning taxi to take us to the airport he was very helpful, calling the taxi company, giving precise directions to the apartment and letting us know that the price quoted was reasonable.
The apartment was clean and well maintained. The kitchen was stocked with everything that we would need (espresso maker, pots and pans, etc.) We cooked dinner ourselves several nights. There are two grocery stores nearby where you can get all the fixings to make a delicious Italian dinner. There are also several good restaurants nearby. Taverna was one of our favorites. If you walk around the neighborhood at night you will see which restaurants are full of locals, which will help you figure out which ones to go to.
The apartment is well situated for seeing the sites and walking around the city. Our first day we walked from the apartment to Piazza Navona, Campo di Fiore, the Pantheon, the Forum/Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish steps, then back to the apartment. It was a full day, but all of these sites are within walking distance of the apartment. In the opposite direction is the Vatican City, with Saint Peter’s being less than 1 mile away and the Vatican museums a bit further (probably 1.3 miles or so). Overall it’s a great location to see the sites from.
Two things must be mentioned. First, although there is a washing machine there is no dryer. This is more common in Europe, and the apartment has a clothes drying rack. For us, it was no problem to hang our clothes to dry. When in Rome, right? Secondly, the apartment is two rooms (one with two king beds and one with one king bed), plus the kitchen/dining area and bathroom. For my family, this is fine since we are used to sharing rooms when traveling. If you are traveling with your family, it will work fine since the bedroom is spacious and there is enough room to put your luggage and unpack and still feel like you have space.
I would rent the apartment again and recommend to a friend. In all it was a great value given all the amenities and the location of the apartment.

Great Location, great host

rucks USA
Review Submitted: May 16, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
I gave this a place a four because of the location and the host, Luigi. It is in an amazing location where everything is close by and walking distance. That is from the Vatican to the Forum, to Piazza Navona,to the Castle of Angelo, to the Spanish Steps. There are literally a hundred restaurants at your door step, all very good. You can also find small boutiques, coffee shops and a super market very close by. Just an amazing location for exploring Rome. As a plus, Luigi, is very kind, helpful and present to make sure he helps in almost anyway. I say almost because the Internet went out while we were there and stayed down for several days. We actually had to leave because it did not work.

Here is what I didn't like about the place and kept it from getting a five. It is small for American standards. The kitchen is impossible to maneuver for more than one person and the bathroom was next to the kitchen, which was not so nice when someone needed to use the bathroom. Also, the advertisement claims that is 2 bedroom. He has a fold out bed in the living room, which then gives you no place to lounge around. Finally, the washing machine barely holds one set of clothes and there is no dryer and since the place is so small, if you have your clothes hanging on the dryer rack all day trying to dry in an apartment then you even have less space.

To sum it up, we were very pleased about the location, the best, and the host was very nice and helpful. It's just that the place was very small, smaller than expected, with no breathing room, and the Internet went out and although Luigi called to get it fixed, in the end we had to move on to another place because I'm working while here in Europe.
Owner's Response: Generally i don't like to reply to reviews but in this case due to the genuine kindness of this renters i decided to do it.

I know that for travellers to rent an apartment abroad sometimes means to be surprised by new styles and habit of living, and i know that there are big differences between american and italian (roman) houses especially in the medieval part of the historical center.

This apartment has the classical size of the medieval apartments built in this part of the city: to have an idea consider that during those times the Sant 'Angelo bridge, very close to apartment, was the only bridge to cross the river (called Tiber) to get to Vatican so every one would like to own a house in this area creating a very chaotic but charming urbanistic style.

In particular in the building where the apartment is located there is only one apartment per floor and this is pretty rare to find and it creates a nice privacy for living.

About internet i can only say that i pay for the broadband connection and offer it to renters but (not depending from me) sometimes (once in 1-2 year) there can be some lack of connection for technical reasons, for this i can't do anything.

I'm very sorry that this renters had to face with this problem.

Very good experience staying here

Bob from NY New York, USA
Review Submitted: April 1, 2009 Date of Stay: March 2009
My wife and 2 young adult children stayed for 3 nights in the apartment and were very pleased. The owner was very pleasant and easy to deal with in terms of advance arrangements. The apartment was clean and functional--not luxious but more than adequate for us. The interior bedroom with 2 double beds is very large; closet space is adequate. The kitchen and bathroom were very good for what we needed. The location is superb--very close and easy walking to bus, good restaurants, the Vatican and other tourist areas. On the day we left Rome, it was an easy, quick bus ride to the train station. The apartment is a little difficult to find because it is on a very small street, but that is the only negative and not a problem after you've located the apartment. We would definitely stay there again.
