About roberta hunter

In 2004, while on a 2 week vacation into the Yucatan, we chose Xcalak as an out of the way destination to relax and enjoy snorkeling and diving, our 2 favorite activities. That was the beginning of an exciting and enriching adventure that we enjoy sharing with guests who return year after year. Two months of every year we live at the Inn and enjoy the tropical breezes and calm, clear waters within the protective reef. We love our spacious, airy, 2 bedroom suites nestled close to the gently lapping waves that are only 60 feet from our porch. We hope to share our tropical paradise with you and have taken great pleasure in detailing the rooms with local Mayan arts and textiles.

Why roberta hunter chose Xcalak

We invested in this Villa because of the obvious beauty of the area and friendliness of its local people. The tranquility and its seclusion allows us the slowed down pace we need between our busy lives in the wine country of northern California. The rest and relaxation we experience while reading, snorkeling, diving and just hanging out in a swinging hammock is all the reasons why we enjoy this special retreat and hope you will too.

What makes this villa unique

Fun Things to Do - Walks on the beach, snorkeling with schools of fish along the coral banks, scuba diving the dozens of world class underwater canyons, a sports enthusiasts destination for great fishing, reading that novel that you've been dying to get to, visiting awe inspiring ruins of the proud Mayan people, eating great food, and reaquainting yourself with those you love.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for following up. We had a wonderful stay at Coral Garden. The road wasn't too bad, and our little rental car made it there just fine…albeit slowly. To answer your questions…

Yes, the unit was clean when we arrived.

We didn't have bad weather at all, and the beach was always raked and clean in the morning. We spent a lot of time out there!

Juana and Agusto really kept to themselves. They did come in and do the dishes and change out sheets and towels, and all. Their children were darling. But all in all we didn't see much of them!

Anything to make our stay more enjoyable? i don't think so! We enjoyed the security pups, the kayaks, snorkeling, and the beach. The condo was a little large for the two of us, but i can't complain about that!

My only suggestion is to clarify the driving directions…it would help to describe making your first left in town, and last left from there, follow the beach and then follow the signs to Costa Cocos, and then about 8k from there. We were really confused coming into town…maybe because the roads in town had seem the worst of the washout.

I would be happy to recommend Coral Garden Inn! We had a great time.

Thank you for all your help! we are already talking about Xcalak for next year!

A very relaxing stay.

We had an awesome stay in Xcalak. It is much more remote than several of the other places we stayed. The beach is virtually your own beach! The unit is not fancy but was VERY clean and spacious for just the wife and I. The pans were in better shape than any of the other places we stayed. We REALLY appreciated that as we cooked most of our own meals. The water here is some of the prettiest we saw and the snorkeling was superb. Roberta was very communicative with us from the get go.

Beautiful!

  • 5 of 5
We stayed here for a week. Back home in Utah it was dumping another foot of snow, while we were in the breeze with the palm trees swaying or snorkeling looking at the beautiful fish and coral just off the beach.

I wouldn't take life jackets again as all the reefs we snorkeled to were in about 3-4 feet deep water - it really is shallow a looong way out. Don't waste suitcase space with them.

Loved the downstairs condo, all the space and bright colors. The caretakers were very nice, even letting us borrow another pair of fins. We did get a chicken from the fruit vendor that came by. Although we missed them most days. Don't count on getting your food from them unless you stick around the house all the time.

We went into Mahahual only to find out our favorite restaurant was gone - 100% Agave is no longer open. :( It is getting much bigger with beach chairs and palapas all along the beach now. Made us kind of happy we were out so far from it all.

The condo was very crisp, clean and very inviting. I'd love to go back - if I didn't have to drive that 9 km dirt road to get to and from the property. It was really not fun to do over and over again in a rental car - lots of pot holes. If we had a motorcycle I would have loved that dang road. We could have zipped back and forth missing all of the holes like the locals did.

All in all, I still loved our trip. If you can handle the drive (or have a motorcycle), the peace, quiet and beauty are very relaxing.

Owner's Response: We are happy to hear you enjoyed your Coral Garden vacation despite the beach road conditions. Xcalak has received more than it's normal amount of rain this year (2013) and it shows in the condition of the beach road. The road gets repaired about every 2-3 years but it it only takes one season of hard rains for potholes to reappear. Some years are better than others. Almost all the hotels and restaurants are located on the beach road because this gives you access to the beach and the ocean. Even though you can drive to the house in a basic rental car, we encourage guests to take it slow.

Perfect Vacation

  • 5 of 5
Our family stayed at the Coral Garden Inn for over two weeks in August. Our girls keep on asking us to take them back there because they miss the coral gardens (beautiful circular coral formations with fish "flying" between the corals about 50 feet off the beach), the friends (Augusta the caretaker’s girls), the pets both in and out of the water (cats, dogs, fish, crabs, birds, lobsters, shrimps, etc.) and the kids' pool (Augusta's children built a little shallow sea-pool with conch shells and rocks).

The inn is beautiful, very clean, and comfortable. We particularly enjoyed having our meals on the porch. We had the entire beach area to ourselves. The only visitors were the food trucks and a group of Mexican scientists surveying the conch growth in the water in front of the house. There are hundreds of huge conches in the water. The water is crystal clear and calm, and there are beautiful coral growths right off shore. The water is shallow and calm enough for toddlers to swim in.

The inn serves as a great base for venturing out. The town of Xcalak is only a few minutes away, and has several shops with food supplies and other things. We had several nice meals at Toby’s. The children loved the fish tacos and fresh fries. We drove to Mahahual and Chetumal and got fresh pineapples on the road to Chetumal. The vendors come right to the road and you just pull your car over and buy it. Truly fresh pineapple is impossibly good! Don’t miss out the diving and snorkeling trips offered by XTC Dive Center. We made it to Banco Chinchorro, which was amazing. The staff at XTC are unbelievably cool, and even baked a cake for our 10 year old’s birthday, completed with relighting candles ?.

Roberta and Ron are gracious hosts. Roberta is patient, responsive and very knowledgeable.

Owner's Response: Thank you for such a positive review. We are happy to hear how much your family fully enjoyed the house, the beach, the caretaker family and the small community of Xcalak. This is the kind of patronage we like to support, where vacationers can create a home away from home and desire to return year after year.
