Photos and Description of the Jonzac area vacation house rental
5 Bedrooms (3 en-suite) with family bathroom, comfortably sleeping 10.

La Renaudrie is a nineteenth century 'petite Maison de Maitre', which in 2006 underwent a luxurious and total restoration. It is in a truly rural setting amongst vineyards and sunflower fields overlooking a valley which gently slopes towards the Gironde estuary. The light and airy house can comfortably sleep 10, having five double bedrooms, (three en-suite). The dining area, sitting room and new kitchen are combined into one comfortable space. The garden has plenty for children to do with a 14' trampoline, a swing/slide/climbing frame and a Wendy House. The former dairy was converted into a games room (pool table) and there is table tennis in an open barn also available is a skateboarding area.

The 11m x 6m L-shaped swimming pool has been designed for family holidays and sited for day long sunshine. It is in a fenced area (with lockable gates) and equipped with an alarm so as to give you peace of mind. It is set by a fig tree and has wonderful views across the countryside.

Riding: There are a number of stables to be found in the area. Les Ecuries de St Antoine is not far – take the D146 on your right as you drive into St Ciers du Taillon and keep on this road. Tel: 05 46 48 07 07.

Otherwise try 'Le Haras' at St.Thomas de Conac (10 minutes), with accompanied riding available by the hour or by the day. Tel: 05 46 86 03 22.

Bird Watching: There are usually birds of prey circling in the area and you might see black redstarts, cuckoos, black kites, hen harriers, buzzards, goshawks, herons, pied flycatchers and hoopoes, amongst others. (A pair of hoopoes were munching-up newly laid grass seed outside the front door this April). In spring and autumn the area as a whole is excellent for spotting migratory birds as the Charente-Maritime is located in the region known as the 'East Atlantic Flyway' an important crossroads for migratory birds. Every year, between August and November, the area becomes the meeting point for birds escaping the winter cold.

Beaches: La Renaudrie is about 35 minutes away from sandy beaches at Meschers sur Gironde and St Georges de Didonne. As you travel west the beaches get smarter and at Royan you can hire a blue and white striped tent and join the ultra-smart set.

Further west, past Royan, St Palais is good and near the impressive zoo at Palmyre there is a great beaches through the pine trees. It has a naturist section (the end nearest Royan). This beach is about an hour away. Further west are surfing beaches on la Cote Sauvage and la Grande Cote - great sandunes and very unspoilt.

La Renaudrie is about 40 minutes away from sandy beaches at Meschers sur Gironde and St Georges de Didonne. This is a quiet rural corner of France ideal for family holidays. The local micro climate gives this area the more hours of sunshine than any part of France - other than the Mediterranean.

The population density for the Charente Maritime is on a par with Cumbria – England’s least populous county – for those used to Britain’s congested roads the comparative peace of rural French roads almost makes driving a pleasure again. Royan to the west of La Renaudrie, is a popular holiday destination for the French who enjoy the excellent beaches & appreciate the local oysters, mussels and freshly caught fish. The local restaurants have excellent fresh fish dishes.

The nature reserve at Vitrezay is local to La Renaudrie & well worth a visit particularly in the migratory seasons. Cognac, Bordeaux, Saintes, La Rochelle and St Emillion are within easy reach.

Golf: Golf - The south Charente-Maritime is good for golfers as there are three excellent 18 hole golf courses not too far from La Renaudrie.

• Near Saintes there is Golf de Saintes Rouyer Guillet, La Grange, 43 Route Golf, 17100 Fontcouverte, Tel: 05 46 74 27 61.

• To the west at Royan is Golf de Royan, www.golf-de-royan.com at 7 avenue Palmyre, 17420 St. Palais sur Mer, Tel: 05 46 23 16 24.

• Near Cognac, Golf du Cognac at 2 rue Maurie, St. Brice, Tel: 05 45 32 18 17.

• A Golf Pass can be bought entitling 10 days use of all three E-mail: cdt17@marcireau.fr

• In addition, there is a smaller 9-hole course available at Montendre (30 mins). Tel: 05 46 49 40 31. E-mail: hubert.ducau@free.fr.

Notes: The garden has well established fig and cherry trees, with plenty of fruit in season - you are welcome to help yourself. The garden has plenty for children to do with a 14' trampoline, a swing/slide/climbing frame and a Wendy House. The games room has a pool and football tables. Also available is table-tennis and skateboarding. The house is in a tiny, rural hamlet; there are only four other houses nearby, on a road that averages about one car every five minutes. Local craftsmen, who worked to high standards, undertook the recent renovation of the house. All the shutters have been replaced and the new, wooden shutters are of the traditional Charentais design. Upstairs all the double-glazed windows have an integrated mosquito screen; so cool, fresh air at night comes without the irritating whine of a midnight mozzie! Downstairs is light and airy. The kitchen, dining area and sitting room are combined into one comfortable space. The kitchen is new and the electrics are mainly Bosch.

Fantastic house

Submitted: July 23, 2009 Stayed: July 2009
We stayed for one week at La Renaudrie in early July 2009 and really enjoyed our stay - right from start with the generous welcome pack. The house itself is as good as it looks in the photos, clean and well looked after. Nice and cool if you keep the shutters closed, and the bedrooms were very comfortable. The gardens were enjoyed by our 3 kids, as were the games room and the pool itself, which has a nice L shape allowing child-friendly depths down one side. There are bikes as well, but we didn't get the chance to make much use of them. Good range of games, books, DVDs and CDs to while away the hours for all ages. Would recommend trips to Meschers beaches/caves, Talmont to walk around and the Palmyre Zoo. All in all, a very good week and a house I would recommend.

A beautiful, well equipped home with a lovely pool

5 of 5
Submitted: September 8, 2010 Stayed: July 2010
I holidayed during the first 2 weeks of August with my family and friends - 9 of us altogether. We have been to France quite a few times now and this house beats them all! It is well equipped with plenty of room for 2 families and a pool that kept our children occupied for hours. The area was quiet and peaceful with fantastic views of the countryside of sunflowers and grapevines. The description on the owners website is exactly as it describes.

On arrival the house was extremely clean, we even had a welcome pack with all essentials including wine!

We visited Royan where we hired bikes, Jonzac, Rochefort, Bordeaux (tip try the park and ride and catch the tram only 4.10 euros p.p), La dune de Pyla at Arcachon was lovely and well worth a visit, Meschers sur Gironde where we found high ropes for the children, and go-karting at St George de Didonne amongst other trips.

The house is about a 10 minute drive from Mirambeau where you can find a Super U, this was great for topping up all our groceries and wine!

We had a brilliant holiday and only wished we could have stayed another week. I would thoroughly recommend this house to anyone looking to holiday in France who wants a picturesque location.

Thank you Gus for being so co-operative during the early booking stages, it really was very much appreicated.

Fantastic House and Pool

5 of 5
Submitted: July 16, 2010 Stayed: July 2010
We (2 couples, our mother & father & twin 18yr boys) have recently returned from La Renaudrie after a week relaxing in this beautifully restored house which is finished & furnished to an expectionally high standard. The house itself is generously proportioned & all double bedrooms are a great size (especially the master). Everything we could possibly need was available, incl. plenty of outside furniture, all towels & linen (incl. beach towels), cooking utensils etc. We liked the open plan living space but very rarely used the indoor table as the weather was so beautiful.
We usually sightsee/travel most days, however the POOL was such a good size, clean & refreshing that we spent most of our days at the house. We managed to use the net & ball provided to set up a vollyball area in the shallow side of the pool and even grandma & grandpa played along.
We visited the local outdoor eatery at the end of the road when our friends visited for the day with their 3 children and had a mixture of burgers, chips etc. which was good, however 2 of the party had the duck which was very good. The visiting children loved the trampoline & ping pong table at the house.
We also ate in the local restaurant 'The White Horse' on our last evening and the food was excellent, however the next day we thought we had been overcharged so would suggest that you check you bill before paying. We didn't get a copy!
One of the day trips took us to Cognac and we enjoyed the tour (& cool air) around the Otard distillery (after being suggested by a very friendly restaurant owner in the town - can't remember the name but walk up behind Otard into town & you'll come to a pedestrian area with a few cafes etc. they served excellent kofta kebabs). Otard was interesting due to the history of the castle and the non-drivers enjoyed the tasting afterwards! Cognac was very pretty & quaint especially by the river. We also visited Royan and enjoyed a pleasant walk along the coast and of course lunch in one of the many restaurants, enjoying moules & frites.
We were regular visitors to the 'Super U' in Mirambeau which is more than adequate for food, wine etc. and only a few minutes away by car.
Our only negative comment about the whole trip was the mosquitos as half of us suffered a few nasty reactions, however a trip to the chemist & some antihistamines & repellent helped. Be prepared.
That said we had a fantastic holiday & many thanks to Gus & Judy for their detailed information & beautiful home.

Owner's Response: Thank you for letting us know that you had a good time, and our gratitude for leaving the house in such an immaculate condition. When our cleaner arrived on Saturday she asked what was she expected to do?

Also thanks for the warning about the mozzies, I will make sure future holidaymakers know to bring repellent and the excellent After Sting from Boots.

10 of us stayed here at the beginning of June to attend my wedding in the area. It was the most perfect environment for relaxing and enjoying quality time with friends and family, we all had a wonderful time. It is just as beautiful as the pictures online and would recommend it to anyone 100%, a very high standard of cleanliness and beautifully decorated. An excellent garden for children with plenty to keep them entertained and plenty of space so even if there is 10 of you there you can always find somewhere you can be for some quiet time. The owner Gus made us feel very welcome and always responded very quickly during the booking process. Overall great value for money, you won't be disappointed.
