''Quality of life, harmony, taste ...'' these are the terms which best define the Perigord.

First of all, as has been shown, the ''Perigord's raison d'être'' is to welcome with open arms those who come here to rediscover forgotten pleasures offered by the natural and simple things in life : pure air, silence, space (especially that), the genuine beauty of the surroundings and the art of living that these pleasures encourage.

Those who value archeology, history, gastronomy, in the country of prehistoric art and troubadors, with its natural beauties, its caves, its old stone buildings and its 1.001 castles, the Périgord and its capital Périgueux, lovingly restored, are all places that MUST be visited.

Come and wander around Perigueux classified ''Town of Art and History'' with :

- the Gallo-Roman remains of the ancient town of Vesunna

- the St-Front Cathedral : one of the landmark religious buildings along the Way of St James of Compostella UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This cathedral is quite a surprise. An unusual sight. It rears up, clear and white, from the very middle of the swelling sea of Medieval Perigueux roofs. A flash of brightness but which lasts. It dominates the town with its marvellous mass. What astonishes you is the lavish yet sober aspect of the Romanesque and Byzantine architecture but above all, it is the way in which the bell-tower grows ever taller as you approach just as the Compostella pilgrims in former times must have approached it, dazzled by it, captivated by it.

It is lofty and white, stark and empty with naves and domes, with arches and galleries and clear stained glass to diffuse the azure brilliance onto the stainless white stone.

- the Medieval and Renaissance district, one of the largest conservation areas in France. In strolling around the charming narrow streets, is to wander through 2.000 years of history.

Eating well is a virtue ! Having delighted your eyes, now is the time to delight your taste-buds. Armed with your shopping basket, you will be captivated by the atmosphere of our Wednesday and Saturday morning markets, where all the colours, smells and tastes of local produce, will excite all your senses.

From November to March, local award-winning duck, goose and truffles markets.

Taste the richness of this exceptional territory : foie gras, duck, truffles, cep mushrooms, strawberries, walnuts, goat's cheese, Bergerac and St-Emilion wines …

From the North to the South, from the East to the West, the countryside around Périgueux reveals its treasures.

It is said that the Perigord countryside is among the gentlest in the world and since happiness never comes alone, the villages of the Perigord are overwhelmingly beautiful : a Romanesque church roofed in heavy stone shingles (called lauzes in french), a chateau or a very old majestic residence on which History has left scars that tell many a tale, the curve of an old bridge, houses enclosing the priest's garden where forgotten flowers flower discreetly and just there, beyond the last barn of the village, the meadows softly rise and fall to the undulating mushroom woods where the muffled fox-barks yelp in the night. At the period of the grape picking, the vines are adorned with a gleaming kaleidoscope of colours, a very subtle impression of russet ...

- Brantôme, Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, Monpazier, La Roque-Gageac, Sarlat …

- the terrace at Domme is a miracle of nature refined by man. As you look upward from the valley on certain days, your first sight of Domme is enough to dazzle you for life.

- the Lascaux Cave (dubbed the ''Sistine Chapel of Prehistory''), Grand Roc (the site of Jean Auel’s 6th book in the Earth’s Children series, The Painted Caves), Villars, Gouffre of Proumeyssac …

- the Castles of Beynac, Castelnaud, Hautefort, Jumilhac, Losse, Puyguilhem …

Whether they are perched on the hills overlooking the Vézère and Dordogne rivers, or hidden in the forests …

- the fabulous gardens of the Manoir d'Eyrignac, the suspened Gardens of Marqueyssac ...

- the Vézère valley, also known as the Valley of Mankind, is one of France's UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Henry Miller on discovering the Perigord wrote :

“This is a magic land jealously guarded by poets ... It is a kind of Paradise granted to the French. I am convinced that that is how it was for Cro-Magnon Man and that he settled here because he was extremely intelligent, with a highly developed sense of beauty. Maybe one day France will cease to exist but the Dordogne will survive just like the dreams that nourish the human soul.”

Numerous cultural, musical and summer festivals and events, of which the famous International ''Mimos'' Festival of Perigueux, which will celebrate in 2014 its 32th edition, features mime, dance, object theatre, acrobatics, street entertainment, puppets and juggling.

OUR SECOND STAY IN THIS MOST CHARMING APARTMENT!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I feel very fortunate to have returned to what we consider our special "home" apartment in beautiful Périgueux 6 months after our last stay. We enjoyed it so much before that we wanted to return to see and do some things we had missed. We quickly contacted our wonderfully kind and generous hosts Marianne and Jean-Pierre and worked our schedule around their apartment's availability since we wouldn't have considered staying elsewhere. Both times they have provided us with many ideas and much information for making the most of our time in Périgueux and its surroundings. We love the location of this apartment which is within walking distance to everything we enjoy - enticing markets, wonderful shops and restaurants, cultural sights, everything historic Périgueux offers. And the apartment's layout and furnishings are exceptionally welcoming and comfortable which reflect the thoughtful care, knowledge and good taste of the owners. No detail has been omitted and nothing could have made us happier staying there so for a second time we felt it was our "home". This time we stayed for 8 nights but wished it had been much longer so truly hope to return. We travel more now that we are retired and in our later 60's and prefer to stay in apartments rather than hotels whenever possible. And this is our favorite apartment of any in which we have stayed. It is very clean and well maintained and the furnishings are truly comfortable. Since we have been there in winter and now summer, both the heating and air conditioning work very well. With wonderful boulangeries right around the corner providing delicious breads and croissants plus Jean-Pierre's tasty fruit jams, we ate breakfast in. Usually we had lunch out whether we were doing things in Périgueux or traveling to places like the Caves of Lascaux, Sarlat or Brantôme. However, the apartment's kitchen is so well equipped and the markets provide such delicious produce, cheeses, breads, seafood and meats, we enjoyed many meals at "home" with a lovely bottle of wine. Marianne and Jean-Pierre provided us with one such bottle! And in the evenings after dinner, we took leisurely strolls to admire the beautiful architecture while seeing other people enjoying the offerings of the city. As our stay was ending, we felt very sad to be leaving but were so happy to see Marianne and Jean-Pierre again and treasured our time in this lovely apartment.
With heartfelt gratitude ~

A TRULY BEAUTIFUL APARTMENT - WONDERFULLY LOCATED!

  • 5 of 5
We stayed 5 nights in this very lovely and very elegant apartment in the heart of historic Périgueux. The kitchen and bathroom were modern and so well equipped. Our bedroom was beautiful and comfortable as were the dining and sitting rooms - all with thoughtful furnishings and interesting window views. The owners, Marianne and Jean-Pierre, were a most warm and welcoming couple with an immense knowledge of their charming city and the surrounding areas and were graciously willing to help us discover and enjoy them. Their quiet apartment was a perfect “home” for us to experience the treasures and enticements of ancient Périgueux. The city’s gastronomy is such an important part of the culture so nearby there were abundant colorful outdoor markets offering such delights as the famous seasonal black truffles of Périgord, foie gras, an endless array of fresh produce and so much more. Plus there were small food shops selling alluring pastries, chocolates, farm cheeses, fresh seafood and meats, delicious prepared foods...! And then there were all of the many cultural, historical and architectural attractions! Just walking the narrow, stone streets seemed like a magical adventure filled with sights to stimulate one’s imagination and create lasting memories! It was very exciting to be there and the apartment’s ideal location was within a pleasant walking distance to everything. So sometimes we dined in one of the many fine restaurants and other times we ate in since we couldn’t resist shopping for some gourmet delights. It was very relaxing to stay “home” in our cozy apartment with everything we needed for an enjoyable evening in Périgueux. Marianne and Jean-Pierre gave us a lovely bottle of wine and some of Jean-Pierre’s delicious homemade jam which was perfect for the croissants we bought during our morning walks to the nearby boulangerie. We feel so very fortunate to have discovered this exceptional property and to have had the joy of meeting Marianne and Jean-Pierre. They are delightful and interesting people and it truly was a very special place to enjoy a peaceful vacation. It makes such a difference experiencing life more as “locals” in a comfortable apartment than tourists in a hotel so we highly recommend it. Thank you both for everything, Marianne and Jean-Pierre! You made our stay in Périgueux very special. And since we didn't stay long enough this time, we are hoping to return so “à bientôt!”

PERFECT APARTMENT & LOCATION

Perfect Apartment & Location
  • 5 of 5
My mother and I stayed at this beautiful apartment in the heart of Perigueux. The apartment is very clean, well equippped and has everything you need for both a short and long term stay.
The hosts Marianne and Jean Pierre are so helpful and friendly, nothing is to much trouble for them. They helped my mother and I with various questions we had about Perigueux as we were tracing our family tree.
The location is perfect. Just a short 40 minute drive from Bergerac Airport. Once at the apartment you do not need a car. Everything is on your doorstep, cafes, restaurants and local shops. The Wednesday and Saturday market is brilliant.
I would recommend this apartment in Perigueux to family and friends. It is super.

A huge thank you to Marianne and Jean Pierre who made our stay so comfortable and enjoyable. It was very much appreciated.

A WONDERFUL STAY

  • 5 of 5
My family spent a wonderful week in this fabulous apartment: it is extremely clean, has very modern features (especially the bathroom and the kitchen) and is perfectly located. It is indeed situated right in the middle of the "Old Town of Perigueux", you could not dream better! And although it is in the citer center, the flat is extremely peaceful and calm.

The owners are extremely kind and helpful and have done a wonderful job at putting together a modern, practical and chic apartment. I would definitely come back during my next trip down to Dordogne.

I would also like to specifically mention the cleanliness of the flat. We have a very small baby and I was hoping to find a clean flat...and it definitely exceeded my expectations.

In the end, I would definitely recommend this flat for anyone willing to spend some time in Perigueux and around!

A WONDERFUL PLACE TO STAY

  • 4 of 5
We had a wonderful stay in Perigueux at the end of June this year.
We were warmly wecomed to the apartment by Marianne and Jean Pierre.who gave us plenty of information on the area and provided literature to browse during our stay. Their recommendations for local restaurants and shops were excellent.
The apartment was gorgeous. The décor beautiful and everything we needed for an enjoyable stay was provided. It was well presented, bright and very clean. There are however two steep flights of stairs to the apartment.
The location was perfect with markets just ouside the door every morning. Perigueux is such a lovely town and so easy to see on foot.
We spent a wonderful evening with our hosts which we enjoyed tremendously.
Perigueux is a destination we would recommend to our friends and there is definitely no better place to stay than Logis de la Cathédrale

Owner's Response: Ideally located in the heart of historic Périgueux, yards from the pearly-white cathedral and an array of cafés, restaurants and shops, this 14th-century building has no lift. Inside, the characterful staircase is not steep. On the contrary, the steps are easy and the staircase is wide till the second floor with a banister. Among our guests stayed at this property, we met many sixties and seventies. Also persons with knee problems. When looking at other reviews, you will read that this property is first recommended to older travelers, etc ... You will see by yourselves how charming and comfortable is this apartment with character, high-end appliances and beautiful stylish furniture. Absolutely well worth the small effort to reach this home. The second floor of historic buildings was the reception level of the rich families. It is why the ceiling is 3.35 m high, providing feeling of wellbeing and comfort. In addition, the south-facing terrace is perfect for relaxing, having a drink or dinning after a whole day of visits. Ancient stone walls ensure peace and the setting – two minutes from the twice-weekly market and the river - is stunning : the perfect place to enjoy the delights of the old town and the gentle lifestyle of Périgord. Come enjoy this top-notch vacation rental steeped in romantic charm, elegance ...!
