Wonderful apartment

  • 5 of 5

My wife, I and our three young children spent four nights in Chris' wonderful apartment. The apartment is located in the middle of the Marais with everything very close by; bakeries, supermarkets, cafés, restaurants, shopping etc. The marketplace, Marché des Enfant Rouge, is only a few blocks away in Rue de Bretagne. If you bring smaller children playgrounds are to be found in the various squares close to the the apartment (e.g. on Place des Vosges). Cultural sites are easily reached by walking, e.g. the Picasso Museum or Notre Dame, or by public transportation (try the busses on Rue Saint-Antoine towards Louvre or the Eiffel Tower - a great alternative to sightseeing busses).

Chris is a very kind and welcoming host and we really enjoyed our stay. Highly recommended.

A few words of caution...

  • 3 of 5

I thought long and hard about writing this review. And I decided that I didn't want what happened to me to happen to anybody else…so here goes.

Whatever you do, don't lean or touch the floor to ceiling mirror in the bathroom. It's not mounted flush to a somewhat curved wall. If you happen to lean against it even ever so lightly, it may crack. And not only do you risk injury, but you will lose your entire deposit. This is what happened to me when I stayed here for a week last year with my two grown sons, ages 18 and 21.

It was entirely accidental--my youngest son was on his phone, sitting on the bathroom floor because the wi-fi doesn't reach the back bedroom. He didn't want to disturb his older brother who was asleep in the living room--and sat back against the mirror. I tried to reason with the owner, but he insisted we were entirely at fault. As I explained to him, if the mirror had been installed correctly in the first place, this wouldn't have happened. Since he has used my deposit to reinstall the mirror exactly as it was, I felt it would be a good idea to warn anyone contemplating renting this apartment.

Yes, the apartment is lovely and the location is convenient. And despite several days of pounding and hammering while the apartment below us was gutted and the elevator was being repaired (and by the way remained broken the entire week), we did have a nice time. It's just too bad the tiny mistake we made cost us so dearly (I am a single mother and was on a tight budget!), and to be honest, spoiled my memories of Paris. This wasn't my first visit to Paris (I actually lived here for a year while studying French Lit in college) but it may very well be my last.

Owner's Response: I’m answering to Deborah’s comment. She stayed in our apartment, in Sept 2014, with her 2 sons, 18 and 21 years old. During her stay, she informed me that there was a small crack at the bottom of one of the mirrored panels in the bathroom. I replied that the mirror was intact before her arrival !!! Deborah finally said that her youngest son broke this mirror. He leaned his back against it one night while sitting on the floor. I told her that I had no other choice than to replace this broken mirror, and I would keep her deposit until I received quotes. She asked me many times to reconsider charging her for the expense of the mirror. Then she left first a laudatory assessment of her stay. She also said that the mirror had probably been improperly installed. Early estimates suggested that it would cost more than her deposit. I sent her the quotes I received. On October I confirmed her definitively my position: - broken mirror must be replaced - her full deposit will be retained Deborah made her booking through Homeaway: she had read the renting contract, there are lines regarding the deposit. I told her that I sincerely regretted this situation She then chose to move to HomeAway insurance or her own insurance to be reimbursed for the cost of mirror replacement. On January 2015, I sent her the mirror replacement invoice that she asked me for her insurance. Final cost was almost 700 €. And now today, 7 months after her stay, Deborah, obviously remains dissatisfied with the turn of events. She wrote this 2nd assessment, replacing the first one. THE FACTS ARE: This mirror has always been properly installed on the wall. This wall itself had been redone entirely during renovation 3 years ago, by certified companies. This wall is not curved and has never been. A mirror is not a seat, not even a back on which to lean. The misuse of Deborah’s son, even if it was is not intentional, does not exempt Deborah from her liability as a tenant. I didn’t refund her deposit: it was used to replace the mirror. I didn’t ask Deborah additional cost for the repair. I ensured quality and safety in the mirror replacement. I understand that Deborah is disappointed by the outcome, but I think that there were no other way to do it.

Perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with our 3 sons (aged 11-18), and loved it. The location is great--walking distance to the Notre Dame (20-25 minutes), plus close to numerous metro stations. There are great restaurants nearby, as well as bakeries, coffee stores, etc....

The apartment was clean and nice, and has everything you could need. We ate dinner in our apartment a couple of times, and found the space more than adequate. Our two older kids--who are very tall--were a little uncomfortable in the 2nd bedroom because of the low ceiling height. But our younger son loved their bedroom. The bathroom took a little getting use to (its very long & narrow), but we certainly managed.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this place.

What a wonderful apartment!

  • 5 of 5

Cozy, stylish, functional, clean. This was a great place to retreat to every night after a busy day in Paris. My wife and I stayed here with our four daughters (ages 8-16). This apartment is on the edge of the Jewish Quarter, and we found the people so friendly. We felt safe and we had great food around the corner on Rue Des Rosiers.

Lastly, there are 3 different parks close by including the Place des Vosges. And the Picaso Museum is right around the corner!

I felt silly that I had to call Christophe on how to work the shower, but he was there in 30 minutes to show me what I was doing wrong. He has wonderful English and really helped us with our general questions about Paris. Don't be afraid of 5th floor living... The elevator works perfectly.

We highly recommend this apartment and we highly recommend the owner, Christophe.

Thank you for making our dream-week a reality.

~David W.
