It Depends On What You Are Looking For

The most fair and honest rating we can give is 4 stars--5 for the location and 3 for the cottage. The lake and surrounding area are beautiful. In the fall it would be majestic! There are numerous waterfalls within minutes of the cottage and two on the lake we found. It is close to Smoky Mountain National Park, although it is not an easy drive to get there. The lake is clear and deep and just gorgeous. It is ideal for watersports, but even the locals say that the fishing is tough. The lot truly is the only semi-level lot we saw on the lake. The marina is literally next door and we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the diner there. The owners' boat is old and not as clean as it could have been, but it is functional and was reasonably priced compared to what the marina charges for a rental. There are very few services available within 15-20 minutes. Again, it's just a matter of preference. The owner seemed reasonable and communication was ok. Now to the negative...The cottage was not adequately clean--especially considering the cleaning fee charged. There were cobwebs in the ceilings and corners throughout the cottage. There was some debris left on the floors as well as a few dead bugs. The master bedroom had live ants including in the bed itself. Also, a towel left for our use was covered in pubic hair. The cottage is accessed by driving through the marina/diner parking lot. The road to the cottage from there is not maintained. There is a metal drainage pipe with a sharp point that shredded our tire. Stay left. The beds we used (the two upstairs bedrooms) were of very poor quality with the master bed being horrific. It is as if two twin beds were pushed together to make a king sized bed. It is as if there is a bar running down the middle of the bed and elsewhere the springs will poke at you. If you have small children, be extra careful on the stairs. They are small and extremely slick. The trash dump site is only open M, W, F. Remember, this is our opinion and improvements may have been made. For what it's worth....
Owner's Response: I don't feel like I should have to defend this complaint. We have rented out this cottage for 7 years to many, many people and have received nothing but rave reviews both from our guest book and from phone calls when guests leave. Many of our guests return each year. Not once has someone complained about spider webs-dirty window sills (which he did to me-this was pollen by the way) bad beds- stairs being too steep-cobwebs in the boat(which he mentioned to me) and towels COVERED with pubic hair, (he told me there was A pubic hair). I'm sure if there were ants in the bed it was due to the sliding glass door and screen in the master bedroom being left open. where there is a tree branch that hangs over the deck.. The topper, however, was he blowing out a tire on a culvert on a road to the cottage. True, in that one spot the road is not the best, but for this to have happened he had to have driven off the road for over time 100s of cars have driven thru there with now problem.
I think for his next vacation, he should not return to the mountains where he might come into contact with bugs, pollen, cobwebs or culverts. Instead, go to a metro. area where all services are close and none of the above can be found
