We have lived in Arcata for over 30 years and we have lived at this property since 1987. We thoroughly enjoy living in Arcata and we especially like our neighborhood. Mountain bike riding is only minutes away. The area is excellent for road riding. No matter what one’s preference for scenery is – forest, seascape, or pastureland, its always easy to take a great ride! We enjoy going to the farmers market on Saturdays, which is only a ten-minute walk from where we live. Local produce is organic and abundant! We enjoy films so consequently we have a large collection of DVD movies, which are available to our guests. We enjoy preparing good meals and do so often. We share our house with our cat Jewels. Jewels was a stray who decided to live with us about 10 years ago – so now we live with royalty.
We purchased a vacant lot in a newly developed subdivision in 1986. What was unique about this subdivision is that the land it was created from was originally used as a playground/ball field for the public school that it is adjacent to. Because of earthquake safety, the school had to be relocated and the property, including the structure that was used as a school, was sold to private developers. Originally, these investors wanted to develop a medium density multi-unit subdivision without a park. The surrounding neighbors protested vehemently and ultimately the subdivision was reduced down from 39 living units to just 17, which also included a 1.25 acre park. Only 3 of the 17 building lots were designated for a supplemental living unit, ours being one of the 3. The other unique feature about our subdivision is that because it is surrounded by historical homes, we were required to build a structure that had historical architecture. This wasn’t a concern for us because we wanted to build a Craftsman style home anyway, which we did. The end result of all of our efforts (community members and neighbors) is that we created a highly desirable area in which to live and it now serves as one of the “jewel” neighborhoods of Arcata. We moved into our cottage in 1987 and lived there until our house next door was completed. What we offer you is a charming place to stay in a quiet, secure neighborhood conveniently located in Arcata.
Such a peaceful cottage environment--small yet full of space. We love the beautiful trees nearby, the interesting book collection, a movie for every taste, lovely art on the walls--a charm to share with our family members who live here in Arcata and McKinleyville--a great way to be an Arcatan for awhile! Thanks.........Marsha
This is our third stay at Parkside Cottage. Each time we found it very clean, quiet, comfortable and a thoroughly enjoyable place to stay. Our son attends HSU and the Cottage serves as a very good home base for us to hang out and relax while waiting for our son to get free from school responsibilities. I know that our son likes that he can get a "home cooked" meal from mom because the kitchen has everything needed and we make good use of it. Great location that is easy walking distance to HSU as well as the downtown plaza area, and the park is a real bonus.
It is a great deal for price/size/location/amenities--far better than a hotel room! I am certain we will be staying here many more time over the next few years.
We are always pleased to stay at Parkside Cottage which became our second home in Arcata. Christine and Jim are so kind and helpfull, the Cottage is well located, not far from downtown, and the location is very quiet.
This was our second stay at Parkside Cottage. We enjoy being within walking distance of town and the Redwood Community park. It is situated on a quiet residential street with a beautiful little park at one end. The kitchen has everything you need for cooking including pie making for the holidays! Super comfortable bed from which we could see the stars at night through the window. Lovely little porch at the top of the stairs to enjoy morning coffee or a glass of wine at sunset. Jim and Christine are the perfect hosts! We were treated to freshly caught yellowtail prepared in various ways during our stay. Superb! They are also full of information of the surrounding area. Can't wait to return!
Our long weekend stay at the cottage was a great get away. The cottage is cozy and welcoming with plenty of space to settle in and feel at home. Jim was the perfect host, very friendly and informative. There are thoughtful extra amenities included through out the cottage. I cooked dinner several nights and had everything I needed to prepare our meals. A perfect home base for a weekend of hiking and music. We will definitely be back again.
Our 3 day stay at Parkside Cottage the end of September was a pure delight. It was everything we expected from the listing/photos and MORE. This is a beautiful place to stay when visiting the North Coast. In a lovely, quiet residential area, adjacent to a small park yet close to amenities of town, the cottage is very clean and beautifully appointed,
the bed is very comfortable, many upgraded items, such as kitchen knives and pots/pans. and art work. A deck with tiny views of the park, mountains to the east and a glimpse of the ocean. Though small the cottage seems spacious. Everything you need has been thought of. Jim, the owner, was helpful and available if needed. Parkside Cottage is a gem. We are looking forward to our next stay here. Our Thanks to the Owners for creating it and making it available.
This is our second time to stay at Parkside Cottage and we had a great time. The cottage is in a good location so that you can walk to the farmers' market, restaurants and shops. We brought our bikes and stored them downstairs under the eaves where they stayed dry when it rained the last night. There are a lot of trails for hiking and riding.
