The rue des Lices is one of the oldest street of Marseille, lices means wooden palisades, which surrounded the squares or the fortified castles, an enclosed plot of land used for jousts or tournaments.

Some remains of the battlement built during the reign of Louis XIV can be seen al along the rue des Lices.

From the end of the rue des Lices, go up to the rue Vauvenargue towards Notre-Dame de la Garde, you will discover a magnificent panorama of the bay and the city. Bus 60 if you wish.

Visit the Basilica and the crypt and go down to the rue de l'Oratoire,(at the bottom of the stairs, on the side of the archbishop's palace) Place Colonel Eon, you will see a tank which was used to liberate Marseille during World War One.

On the way there is a a large building, the Institute for the Blind and the first public garden of Marseille, the Pierre Puget Garden.

Here are some good addresses closeby, l'Epicerie,Le café de l'Abbaye (good value for money).

To be visited in the area:

The St Victor Abbey, place of pilgrimage, Black Madonna, catacombs.

The St-Nicolas Fort which is on the opposite bank with the St-Jean Fort, were guarding the entrance of Marseille.

The Palace of Pharo offered by empress Eugenie, the spouse of Napoleon III to the city of Marseille.

Since Ancient Times, the Vieux-Port is embedded in a calanque. The Calanque du Lacydon (the name of a brook coming from the heights of La Canebiere towards the harbour). Curled up between the St-Laurent Butte, Carmes and Mills on the north side and the hill of Notre-Dame de la Garde on the south side, the city grew up all around over the course of the centuries.

The Quai de Rive-Neuve and the Quai des Belges are currently being renovated, one of the most beautiful walks of Europe will be inaugurated at the end 2012 , beginning of 2013 (with no transit traffic).

Restaurants, brasseries, ice-cream parlours, souvenir shops, OM soccer shop, etc. can be found all around the Vieux-Port.

Les Arcenaulx where the galleys of Louis XIV were constructed. The arsenal were destructed at the end of the XVIII the century and the area was rehabilitated for living and warehouses.Today, boutiques, art galleries, cafés and restaurants encircle the Estienne D'Orves Square.

The surrounding streets have evocative names like rue des Brusques (brooms used to burn the hulls to clean the particles attached during navigation) rue du Petit Chantier, Boulevard de la Corderie,

La criée Théâtre National (the old fish market).

Cross the harbour in a typical boat from Marseille. The ferry in fron the Bar de la Marine.Pagnol with Escartefigue, Mr Brun, Panisse, Marius, Fannie.Here you are in front of the Town Hall.

Discover the oldest area of Marseille, the Panier (where the soap 'Plus Belle la Vie' is being filmed).

Admire the Maison Diamante, wonderful dwelling, saved during the dynamiting of the area during World War Two and which has been moved.

The Hotel-Dieu, from the 17th Century, is an old hospital and soon to be luxurious 5 star hotel.

The Church of the Accoules and the hill going to the Place des Moulins.

The Place de Lenche.

The place has been influenced by every emigration wave that Marseille has seen during the 20th century. Italians, Greeks and Corsicans. The narrow streets allowed to communicate from window to window. Evocative names reflect the intense history of the area. Rue du Petit Puits, Place des Treizes Coins, rue Puits du Denier, rue des Cordelles, rue des Mauvestis (the badly dressed), rue Belles Ecuelles.

La vieille Charité (1641) hosts many exhibitions, was an hospice and then a prison.

Visit of the Chapelle St-Laurent, the cathedral of La Major, the St-Jean Fort and the Musée des Civilisations.

Enjoy the tram, visit the Palais Lonchamps, on the heights of the Canebiere.

Book a nice day or an afternoon for this walk.

Bus 83 will take you to the Vallon des Auffres, a typical old fishing village.

You will walk along the Corniche-Kennedy (a residential area of Marseille with splendid villas), stop at David (a copy of the statue of Leonardo Da Vinci).

Take a walk along the beaches of the Prado, (hectares reclaimed from the sea with the rubble of the construction site of the underground of Marseille) have a glass of wine on the terrace of one of the many establishments.

Visit the Château Borely.

Bus 19 towards the Goudes

Quai de rive-neuve, board on the excursion boats to visit the islands, Frioul, the Château d'If, famous for the Comte de Monte-Cristo, of Alexandre Dumas.

Visit the Calanques by boat, you will not be able to land nor swim but you will have amazing photos. They start just after the typical area of the Goudes, at the south end of the city. Bus 19 to Callelongue,

Marseilleveyre,Sugiton, Morgiou, En-Vau, Port-pin,etc.

To visit Cassis which is a summer resort and a pretty village, you can ride a special bus. Marseille /Cassis in Castellane next to the Mac Donald. Prices.

To visit Aix-en-Provence

Underground Vieux-Port, exit Gare St-Charles

Follow the signs Gare Routiere, departure every half hour towards Aix. Beautiful market on Saturday morning.

Cet appartement est joli , bien équipé donnant sur une esplanade trés calme , plein sud.
Il n'y a aucun bruit de voiture.
Pour des raisons professionnelles j'y ai logé à plusieurs reprises et je peux dire qu'il est confortable été comme hiver.
Le quartier est particuliérement sympathique.
On trouve dans le bas de la rue d'endoume, boulanger, primeur et autre commerce , un super marché est accessible à pied à environ 400 m.
On peut passer de trés bon moments dans les restaurants et cafés environnants.
