EXACTLY WHAT WE HOPED FOR!

  • 5 of 5
A perfect experience from the moment we arrived and were greeted by managers Aurore and Nour. They were so charming and friendly... helping us carry our heavy bags up the winding stone staircase, showing us how the appliances worked, and then taking us for a lovely tour of the area -- so we would know the best places to shop for food and wine. They live very close by, so although we never needed them, it was nice to know they were only a quick phone call away. Our favorite parts of this beautiful apartment: The furnishings and decor... the 4 elegant floor-to-ceiling French doors... the grand view of the pedestrian plaza and the historic buildings and churches... as well as going to sleep to the pleasant buzz of conversations from the cafe 4 floors beneath us (which usually became quiet around midnight or so)... waking up to the sound of the cobblestones being swept (don't plan on wearing your very high heels in the historic areas!)... and the modern conveniences too: hard-wired internet, a large and new bathroom, secure locks, and a well-furnished kitchen for cooking. We LOVED our stay and wish it could have been even longer than a week. We visited many local cafes, went to the beach via bus one day, rented a bike for touring the city, shopped on the Place de Comedie, enjoyed Le Jardin de Plantes, joined the Friday night Festivale near the art museum (wine! food! concerts! craft vendors and artisanal foods!) The apartment is well situated to the train station too... as well as the historic sights of Montpellier. Thank you, Barbara, for sharing your gorgeous home with us -- and thank you to Aurore and Nour for your advice, your warmth, and wonderful hospitality. We would love to visit again!

Owner's Response: As this review indicates the apartment is practically at the epicentre of things to do in Montpellier, as well as a good base from which to explore Languedoc-Roussillion, a fascinating region. The apartment also offers a luxurious respite from the outside world when tenants want to chill for a while. I'm very pleased that the eyeofblue party enjoyed their stay and were appreciative of efforts by Aurore and Nour, fonts of local knowledge, to make their visit as pleasant as possible.

FANTASTIC LOCATION. ATMOSPHERE IN ABUNDANCE.

  • 5 of 5
There are rental properties into which owners have invested money and love. This is absolutely one of them. Barbara has created an apartment which is both beautiful and practical. Everything works as it should, but there are so many great decorative touches. And the location cannot be bettered. Wake up in the morning, throw back the purple curtains, and go through the ritual of opening old-fashioned french windows and shutters, and you are gazing out over a beautiful square, once the location of the town hall, and the main cathedral. Being on the top floor has it's advantages which is worth remembering when dealing with about 69 steps on the way up.
Barbara's local manager Monique was charming and met me at the station which is about 10 minutes walk away. She was available throughout in case of problems - but there weren't any! She did point me towards the renowned bakery across the square and the Saturday food market both of which were superb.
I would thoroughly recommend this apartment to any single or couple looking for a real local experience in a very agreeable environment.

CHARMING APARTMENT IN PERFECT LOCATION

  • 5 of 5
We arrived at the apartment to be greeted by Aurore and her husband and were immediately thrilled that we had chosen to stay here. The square must be the prettiest in Montpellier and the apartment is truly lovely. It is the best mix of authenticity and comfort, and was a joy to come home to. Montpellier is beautiful and there's lots to see and do, so it's even more of a compliment to want to return to the apartment! With a daughter studying at Montpellier University for a year, we could strike the balance of being tourists and parents at this home from home. On a previous visit to Montpellier I stayed in a swish hotel with a swimming pool etc - but Barbara's apartment was so much better. Already planning our next trip! Thanks to Barbara for useful advice before our arrival, and to the great welcome and tips from Aurore and Nour

CHARMING MONTPELLIER APARTMENT

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this elegant apartment. We received a warm welcome from Aurore and her husband and they told us all we needed to know about the flat.

It is very central and situated in a lovely square. It is as well to realise, however, that it is a top floor apartment reached by a climb of 65 stairs; worth it when you get there, though! Very clean, good linen and towels and everything necessary for a comfortable stay - including free Wi-fi.

Very good, lively bar/restaurant right next door, Comptoir de l'Arc. They don't serve breakfast, however, and for that we enjoyed Patisserie Teissier in Rue St Guilhem.

Don't miss Les Estivales on the Esplanade on Friday nights in summer: wine tasting, food, music and much more.

Would recommend this property to friends as an excellent base from which to explore elegant Montpellier. Thank you to Barbara Drake, the owner, for her excellent communications and ease of booking.

TRANQUILITY IN THE HEART OF THE CITY

  • 5 of 5
The view of Place de la Canourgue in the listing is taken from the third floor apartment. We were there in early February and very quickly fell in love with the apartment and Montpellier. The pictures reflect the flat pretty accurately. The address is slightly misleading in that the Hotel de Ville is a house rather than a 'rue'. The owner was most helpful and easy to communicate with. The arrangements for access simple and Mme Slim welcomed us and showed us round. The apartment was neat, fun and faultless - apart from a lack of a dishtowel!
The city is very pedestrian friendly and we were glad to have left the car at home. Parking would be a mightmare. On foor there are lots of lovely, tiny old streets to explore and wonderful restaurants and cafes within minutes of the apartment. We'd recommend the cafe on the corner, (1min walk) and Les Vignes (5mins) for something slightly more special. Fresh produce and a wonderful variety of cheeses and saucisson sec are available in the market at Les Halles.
For journeys beyond the city centre the trams and the trains are easy to negotiate. We went by tram and bus to the coast and by train to Carcassone (we've both read Kate Mosse's "Labyrinth" and that's where it's set - fantastic Medieval Castle but not really geared up for out of season visitors). La Grande Motte (coast) didn't appeal to us much - but at least we could say we dipped our toes in the Med!
Friends and relatives are tired of hearing us rave about this trip. We walked a LOT - but it meant we enjoyed our food and coffee/tea stops all the more! We confess to watching France massacre Scotland at rugby - the pub was packed and despite our allegiance to the 'wrong' team the natives were very friendly and the music and noise when France scored... oh, la, la!!
We very definitely want to go back - I suspect off season again since I imagine it must be so much busier in the summer and we quite liked being among the French rather than fellow tourists.
