The Casa Benussi apartment is in a much photographed Venetian Gothic house in prime position on the main square of the medieval town of Vodjnan in Istria. A sweeping circular stone staircase leads to the the apartment on the second floor. The rooms are very spacious and light with great views from all 8 windows! In 2006 the property was modernised to a very high specification, with attention to the preservation of the original character and free Wi-Fi internet access. Vodnjan is 20 minutes from Pula airport (Ryanair), 2 hours from Rijeka airport and Trieste airport. It is also 20 minutes from Rovinj and 5 minutes from the ferry to Brijuni Islands. The apartment has a roof top terrace with spectacular views over the countryside, distant mountains and nearby sea. The local area is excellent for biking, exploring, walking and rock climbing. Nearby Pula has a large Roman amphitheatre, a busy harbour as well as museums, shops and many cultural and sporting activities. Frequent bus service.

Istria has been an important gateway to Europe for more than a thousand years. This coming and going is reflected in both culture and architecture making Istria more like Europe than the rest of Croatia. Italian is the official second language here and both buildings and agriculture seem much like Tuscany. The ever popular coastal towns are well worth a visit, but so are the gems inland - the walled medieval hills towns of Groznan and Motovun, the ruined city of Divigrad and the dramatic views from the top of Mt Ucka. Wine, truffles, and a therapeutic hot-spring mud bath can make a great day out. Formerly Vodnjan was a garrison town for the Roman army; later overshadowed by its port, Pula. Today Vodnjan is rebounding in a rather relaxed fashion, and is a fine staging post for trips to the palaces of Tito's island retreats on Brijuni, the beaches of the fishing port of Fazana and the seafood restaurants of Pula.

Well equipped, spacious, tasteful apartment

The apartment is centrally placed,overlooking the town square, which provides endless 'watching the world go by' entertainment.
The apartment itself is well equipped, spacious and tastefully decorated. The town itself is an ideal base within 10 mins of beaches and the wonderfully clean Adriatic.
Several excellent resturants that were cheap for food and drink.
Well placed for lots of good sight seeing, Pula, Roman remains, The Brinjini Islands, Tito's residence etc etc
Overall I would thoroughly recommend the apartment and the area.

A fantastic place to stay!

We arrived at night in the middle of the penultimate night of the Bumbar Fiesta - the town square was alive and the atmosphere was brilliant. Things got even better when, after meeting the keyholder who was very friendly and helpful, we were shown up to the gorgeous apartment. Very spacious and tastefully decorated - a brilliant base for the week. Around the town we found the people to be friendly - the bar below is a great place for a bit of people watching! The Girotondo restaurant is a must for a visit - unbelieveably good prices for the most amazing pizzas - and our waiter went out of his way to be helpful and make suggestions - all of which were spot on!

Slightly further afield, we enjoyed Fazana for the beaches, a bit rocky but lovely scenery and not too overcrowded. Other day trips including Rovinj and Pula made the trip a great sightseeing tour. We hired a car and found this invaluable in helping us get around - so much to see and do!

Sorting out the apartment prior to our visit was easy - lots of clear communication and a very helpful map and set of directions. I was impressed with how easy it was to find and the convenience of the airport. The place was spotless and very comfortable. The only thing I missed was a cooker rather than just a hob, but in the end it wasn't a problem as we ended up sampling local places! Plus the weather was so hot, we didn't fancy cooking much anyway!

Thanks for the great accomodation. It was lovely to return back to each day and relax, especially with great views from both the terrace and the front of the apartment - I'd definitely highly recommend a stay at Benussi! Too good to miss!

Things got better and better.

Being dropped off by bus in what appeared to be the middle of nowhere was not the start to our holiday that we anticipated.However meeting our keyholder put our minds at rest,and seeing the apartment for the first time confirmed this, the facilities are excellent.There are great nightime views from the roof terrace which is when the place comes alive.
The locals are friendly and shops, bars and restaurants are all nearby, max. 10 minute walk. The Girotondo being the pick of the bunch for quality and value for money.
Local transport is reliable and on time but not plentiful, so a car is a must.
There are some good days out to be had, Fazana has a nice harbour and take the Brijuni island excursion really nice.Venice is a great day out to,although we used public transport for the connections this made an extremly long day but well worth it.
Overall i would not hesitate to recommend this apartment,
and dealing with the owners was a pleasure nothing was too much trouble.

Wow! This apartment has been expertly and sympathetically renovated to provide a superb, spacious and bright holiday accommodation. It is set in the heart of the little town of Vodjnan and is within easy reach of anywhere in Istria. A hire car is a must to appreciate this beautiful, unspoilt corner of Europe.
All the amenities in the apartment were clean and of good quality and the owners communicated well via email beforehand.
Eating out is good value (we are a family of 5) and plentiful.
I would not hesitate in recommending this apartment...it is truly wonderful!
