Casa Roxa is a beautifully and completely renovated Asturian village farmhouse complete with its own 'horreo' (elevated grainbarn) and a large, semi-enclosed garden with views of the ocean. Its quiet location on the ocean edge of the village of Ballota offers a private site to relax and enjoy walks down to the coastline or through the fields. The house is on two floors. Downstairs is the open kitchen, dining area and large living room with a large, beautiful fireplace as well as a full bathroom. Upstairs is the second bathroom and 4 bedrooms, with beautiful views of the village, countryside and the sea. The fireplace in the living room heats the entire house incredibly well. The kitchen is well equipped and sunny. The stone paved outside patio offers a lovely setting for dining out and the sitting area under the horreo is perfect for staying out of the rain or sun. Ballota’s beach is an open pebble and rocky one with some sandy spots which never has very many people. A 15 minute drive away are numerous sandy beaches with parking, snackbars and lifeguards.

Casa Roxa and Ballota: Casa Roxa has been lovingly restored and decorated. Begoña the owner is an artist and her work is found throughout the house. The large garden is enclosed by a low stone wall and has fruit and flowering trees and bushes. There is plenty of room to play. This year Pascual & Begoña have a cheese factory and are happy to have you try their raw milk artisanal cheese provided for you upon your arrival.

Ballota is a small, neighbourly coastal town. The town enjoyed a building boom at the turn of the 19th century with splendid examples of local architecture both by local farmers and returning emigrants from the Americas. Today it is still small and quiet with dairy farms and corn fields. The beach in Ballota is a mix of sand, pebbles and stone with marvellous tidal pools. Rarely are there many people there. It is about a 2 Km walk from the house. Beautiful sandy beaches are found just a 10 minute drive away in either direction

Oviedo and Gijon: Oviedo, the beautiful cathedral capital of Asturias, and Gijon, the lively beach city on the coast, are both worth a visit for their museums, cultural events, historical centres and shopping. Both are just under an hour by car. Avilés, a smaller city, is only a 40 minute drive for shopping and its pretty historic centre. The narrow gauge train, FEVE, which travels along the coast and stops in Ballota can take you west to Luarca or beyond although at a much more leisurely pace. Leaving the car behind offers a stress free day for the driver. The train travels through countryside not seen from the motorway and adds local flavour to your visit. Train schedules are provided in the house. To go to Oviedo for the day you must travel to Cudillero or San Esteban de Pravia.

Western Asturias: Western Asturias is growing in popularity as it is now easily accessible along the new coastal motorway. With Easyjet and Vueling into Asturias (OVD) and RyanAir to Santander as well as ferry service from England to Santander and Bilbao this part of Spain is now being discovered as one of the still unspoilt areas of Northern Spain. The climate along the ocean is temperate offering pleasant summer temperatures and mild winters. The natural parks of Muniellos and Somiedo are closer at hand than the famous Picos de Europa. They offer unique experiences. Somiedo is home to the largest brown bear population in Asturias as well as vultures, eagles, wolves and other mountain fauna coexisting with the summer grazing of cattle in and around quaint thatched hamlets. Muniellos, an ancient oak forest, a Bioshere Reserve is for the serious nature lover and is only available through prior reservation. We are happy to help you with that. Wished we had stayed longer!

We--2 adults and 3 children- had a wonderful stay in Casa Roxa. The house was charming and modern. We enjoyed having fires in the fireplace. The children loved exploring the fields and making their way to the coast--a beautiful view of the beach below. We visited both Ballota Beach and Silencio Beach and loved both even though it was chilly.We got bread and cookies from the local bakery just around the corner. My children loved seeing the cows and horses and people working on the farms. Everyone was friendly. We had a wonderful meal at Casa Fernando-within walking distance. We mainly ate at home since the kitchen was well stocked, and we had stopped and bought groceries on the way. Casa Roxa had plenty of information about what to do locally. The house and surroundings were relaxing and could be enough, but the area has plenty of places to visit. My husband and kids climbed a mountain. We didn't do half of things that we would have liked to do. Our kids only complaint--was "Mom, why didn't we stay longer!"

This is a lovely house with a great patio and garden in a friendly village. All the rooms are big, and the house is lovely and cool inside in summer. Our three young children loved the house and garden. The village is charming too. The nearby bakery is marvellous, and the village cafe/bar, Casa Fernando, is fantastic. Ballota is peaceful, traffic-free, a great base for walking, cycling or exploring Asturias. We recommend it completely.

Casa Roxa is in the coastal farming village of Ballota halfway between the port towns of Cudillero and Luarca in Western Asturias within easy reach of the Asturian Airport and along the new coastal Cantabrican Motorway. Well located for exploring the mountainside and coast it is just under an hour from both the large cities of Gijon and Oviedo and only 40 minutes to Avilés. The narrow guage FEVE train stops in Ballota twice a day making excursions west to Luarca or beyond enjoyable. The village itself is attractive, perched above the ocean with spectacular views and its own pebble beach down a winding unmade road. Ballota has a restaurant/bar, 2 hotels, a tennis court and a bakery. The area offers endless dining opportunities, shopping and market days. The beaches are many and range from rocky to sandy, easily accessible or remote. The mountains are equally as scenic. The Camino de Santiago as well as other walking opportunities abound. Not yet 'touristy' this area is a gem of protected landscapes, small town flavor and friendly locals. Summers are delightful in Asturias as temperatures are mild year round and there is no need for air conditioning.
