Cannaregio is the northernmost of the six historic sestieri (districts) of Venice. It is the second largest sestiere by area and the largest by population,

The Cannaregio Canal, which was the main road in the city until the construction of a rail link to the mainland, gave the district its name. Development began in the eleventh century that the area was drained and parallel channels were dredged. Although elegant qu'arabo Normandy were built in front of the Grand Canal, the area has increased mainly with the working class housing and manufacturing. The history of the Ghetto of Venice is generated fascinating. When 29 March 1516, the government of the Serenissima Repubblica issued special laws, the first Ghetto of Europe was established. This is an area where Jews were forced to live and they could not leave from sunset to dawn. The area was closed by gates watched by guards and so far the marks of the hinges are visible there. Jews were allowed to practice only in certain professions were doctors, because they were the most willing and able to understand the Arabic writings, money lenders, because the Catholic religion forbids this practice, traders and " strazzarioli "ragsellers. However, the Jews have held successful positions in the city as merchants, physicians, money lenders and other businesses. The Ghetto existed for over two centuries, until Napoleon conquered Venice and finally opened and eliminated every gate (1797): the Jews were finally free to live in other areas of the city.

In the nineteenth century, civil engineers built a street named Strada Nuova, through Cannaregio and a railway bridge and the road bridge was built to connect directly to Venice Mestre. Today, areas along the Grand Canal district, the train station to the Rialto Bridge are highly frequented by tourists, but the rest of Cannaregio is residential and relatively peaceful, with morning markets, neighborhood shops and small cafes.

fantastic apartment and location

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 stayed for 4 days and loved it. The location is in a local neighborhood, so you get the real feel for life in Venice today away from the mobs of tourists. From the front window you hear and see all the action on little canal, tons of working boats and families heading off to work and school in the morning. The apartment is well appointed with a true Venetian character.

We walked everywhere and thoroughly enjoyed meandering through the narrow winding streets. Google Maps is an invaluable tool even without a data plan. You can find your location on a map which will keep you from getting too far lost.

Elisabeth was a marvelous host; leaving wonderful treats and making sure everything about the stay was perfect. Her efforts alone are worth 5 stars. We would definitely return and recommend the apartment highly.

Our group of 6 travelers enjoyed our stay at this lovely apartment. The hospitality shown to us was outstanding. Lots of space for everyone, an easy walk to restauraunts, bars and of course all the attractions. The kitchen was perfect for our needs, the washer a blessing on week 2 of our trip. When we got back home tired out, sitting to watch a movie was great. Highly recommended

Wonderful Welcome to Italy

  • 5 of 5

Venice was our first stop on a multi-city tour of Italy, and this apartment was the perfect landing spot! Marc patiently and promptly answered my email inquires before our arrival, and Elisabeth prepared the apartment for us beautifully. The apartment is spacious and attractive, with plenty of space for gathering as well as separate spaces for all six of the travelers in our group. My mom was especially happy to see the bathtub in the downstairs bath! The kitchen was compact and so well arranged we found it very easy to prepare breakfasts and snacks. The apartment was a little outside the main tourist area, but the walk was very manageable even for my parents in their 70s. It was just as attractive as the pictures in the posting.

We have rented through VRBO in many places, but this one stands out because of Marc and Elisabeth's exceptional hospitality. In addition to Marc's prompt and thorough communications, Elisabeth did a wonderful job preparing the apartment for our arrival. It was the most thoughtfully stocked of anyplace we stayed, with coffee, juice and wine in the kitchen and a big bowl of fruit, and bread for our first breakfast. There were lots of towels for the bathrooms, plenty of dishes and glasses and supplies. Marc, if you ever tire of your day job you would make an excellent innkeeper! We hope to stay here again sometime.

Wonderful! This is what homeaway stay should be!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful, roomy apartment (my son loved having the loft and a bathroom to himself) in a quiet, less touristy neighborhood in Venice. Good restaurants nearby, though we also cooked in the kitchen and ate in the dining room. Elegant, clean, well-stocked, and many thoughtful touches. Grazie, Marc!

Gorgeous Apartment

  • 5 of 5

My family of 5 stayed in this gorgeous Venice apartment for 5 days. It is even more beautiful in person than in the photographs. It is in a less touristy area so was an excellent escape from the summer crowds, but an easy and beautiful walk to the popular tourist areas. There were several great restaurants within a couple of minutes walk. The owner was more than accommodating, and the business side of the transaction was easy and stressless. They provided bread, milk and fruit for us on arrival. The beds were very comfortable and having 3 bathrooms was great. My whole family gasped when we entered for the first time ("oooo, ahhhh") and thanked me for bringing them there. I highly recommend this property.
