The beautiful Austrian village of St Gilgen, nestles on the shores of Lake Wolfgang in the region of lakes and mountains known as the Salzkammergut. It was home to Mozart's mother and sister. The region is a popular holiday destination throughout the year, with outdoor activities, cultural events, historical sights & local festivals. The village has a lovely ambiance day and night with enough places to eat and drink and small shops without being crowded. The area is excellent for a whole range of activities including walking and cycling. There is a full range of water sports including water skiing, sailing and windsurfing. In winter there is skiing above the village and the extensive Dachstein West ski region, with 140km of runs is comfortably reachable by car.

Further details for this vacation apartment rental in St. Gilgen, Austria

Ski Details: St. Gilgen skiing is on the Zwölferhorn reached by cable car from the village centre. There are 9 km of piste, including 5km of medium level of difficulty and 4km of easy routes. Skiers may also use 2 lifts: line and belt at the beginners slope in the village. The family ski area of Postalm is 30 minutes away by car. This is fantastic for beginners and intermediates with a whole range of wide blue and red runs. At Gaissau Hintersee 30 minutes away in the other direction, there are 40km of routes. The best skiing with 140km of pisted runs is at the extensive Dachstein West ski area near Gossau- approximately 50 minutes away by car and on Krippenstein near Obertraun (55 mins) for high altitude skiing at over 2000m. Snow-sure year-round skiing is available on the glacier at Kaprun, next to Zell am Zee, 90 mins away. Others to sample are at Schladming and Flachau. Ski lessons can be booked at Postalm, Dachstein and Kaprun

Golf: There are 3 excellent golf courses in the area at Bad Ischl, Fuschl and Mondsee.

Other Activities: The area is excellent for a whole range of activities. Lake swimming is popular with many attractive beaches and surprisingly warm water from July to Sept. It is safe and the water is of drinking quality. A visit to the beautiful onion-domed church of St Aegidius in the village centre is a must. Mozart's grandfather was buried here as were several other members of his family. Hugo von Flisch the Nobel prize winner also lived here. Another must is the historic 11km walk from St Gilgen to St Wolfgang, returning by boat ferry. In the surrounding area there are plenty of places to visit including the historical village of Hallstatt, salt mines & ice caves. The nearby spa town of Bad Ischl which was once the summer retreat of the Austrian Royal family is a popular destination, with its thermal baths renowned for their healing properties. Historic Salzburg is about 50 mins away by bus.

Other Activities: kayaking, winter and summer tobogganing

Great flat

Marianne1 London, UK
Review Submitted: December 12, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
I loved the flat. It's really spacious and great value for money. It's brilliant in summer as there's so much to do: it's in walking distance of the beach, there's mini-golf, slides, walks around the lake, boat trips, tobogganing, water skiiing and wakeboarding, boat and canoe hire, you can take the cable car to the top of the mountain where there are amazing views and nice mountain restaurants, or you can take a train right to the top of an even higher mountain! It's great and you don't even need a car - we just got a bus from Salzburg airport.
I've been in winter too and it's really lovely, especially around Christmas time when they have an advent festival with a Christmas market, mulled wine, bands, etc. You need a hire car though to get to the ski lifts.
Overall it's a great flat and highly recommended!
Owner's Response: Another 5/5 rating. Splendid !

Rentals are indeed great value, half of the French Alps & English Lakes.

As you found, its a superb location for lots of fun activities as well as for walking, sight-seeing, boat rides and skiing.

There's also a bike hire place next to the mini-golf and many safe cycle paths - ask at the friendly tourist office for a map.

The views from Zwolferhorn, 1521m ( on the right from the balcony ) and the spectacular Schafberg, 1783m ( on the left from the balcony ) are breath-taking. For good walkers, both are delightful full day walks. For a more relaxing ascent, take the cable-car & funicular respectively. The view from the peak at the top of Katrin cable car at Bad Ischl includes the majestic Dachstein Glacier.

Travelling by bus from Salzburg airport is indeed very economical. Alternatively, the booking agent can provide the contact for a cost-competitive taxi service. Car-hire with easy car is also good value.

Comfortable, lovely views, and good value

Vishva London
Review Submitted: September 10, 2008 Date of Stay: December 2007
I have stayed at this flat twice now - it is in the charming village of St Gilgen, with a supermarket a short walk away and lovely view of the mountains. The double room is large and spacious and the bathroom bright and modern. There is a balcony leading out from the main lounge / kitchen with a pretty view. This apartment is an absolute bargain - Austria is expensive - especially if you are skiing. Staying here means comfortable accommodation at very good value. But you will need to hire a car if you plan to stay here for a ski trip!
Owner's Response: Wow, 5/5 rating! Thanks.

Rentals have been set up at a very competitive rate - typically, half the price of anything similar in the French Alps or the English Lake District

Charming is an apt description for St Gilgen, its Austrian residents and the apartment.

Next door to the well-stocked supermarket referred to is the friendly Tourist Office and a cash point. Its English, French and German-speaking staff are very helpful.

They will supply you with a free map of the village and its surroundings, which also shows popular walking routes. Also ask for a free weekly guide to 'whats on' in the area, bus and ferry timetables, etc. During the high season, you can buy the Salzkammergut Card, which entitles you to good discounts to most of the area's tourist attractions.

If you are visiting Salzburg, get its 24 hr tourist card for free entry on its buses, cable car, river ferry, museums, palaces, zoo, Steigel brewery etc.. A clever trick is to get it just after lunch to get 2 half days within the 24 hrs!

Well worth a stay!

Review Submitted: September 9, 2008 Date of Stay: March 2008
Have rented this apartment now on 4 separate occasions and have no need to go anywhere else. Large and comfortable bedroom, nicely furnished with plenty of wardrobe space. Cosy duvets and clean and decent bed linen. Excellent bathroom and shower, (careful with the heater in the bathroom as if you turn it on highest setting, it turns into a sauna) Good decent kitchen with all necessary cooking utensils. Absolutely extraordinary views from the balcony. St Gilgen is a friendly and quaint village with character, really enjoyed walking back at night and being able to see the stars. Highly reccomended.
Owner's Response: Delighted to have so so many repeat bookings. Please keep coming.

I'm pleased you found the view from the balcony extra-ordinary. I fell in love with it at first sight. Zwolferhorn (1521m) & the cable car on the right, majestic Schafberg (1782m) with its triangular peak on the left, ahead a glimpse of the lake and Great Gable look-a-like Bleckwand (1516m), next to the Postalm ski area.

Superb!

Our Comments On This Appartment In Sankt-Gilgen

jonnyteabag Lancashire, England
Review Submitted: August 22, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
The apartment is in a ground floor location within an elevated block with lovely views, however it is a bit of a drag up the hill out of the village and the street lamps were always out. You had better take a torch if walking back from the town. The apartment had a large bedroom with plenty of storage when you put the surplus duvets on the top of the wardrobe. The bed linen could have done with renewing, our duvet cover was torn at the bottom. The electrical sockets appeared to be a bit loose, incapable of holding a UK adaptor and in our view dangerous. Somewhat annoying when trying to use any electrical item such as hairdryer, shaver etc. The bathroom and separate toilet were fine. The lounge consisted of very old furniture. There were no coasters to put hot drinks on. The spare blankets could have done with renewing as these had a stale smell. The light fitting in the lounge was very old and looked as if it had had a repair at some time. The kitchen was OK. The balcony had a lovely view over the car park with the lake in the back ground, but the table and chairs could have done with renewing and there was a door mat which had clearly seen better days. The washing machine/dryer room were good. Only thing was you could not wash at weekends and after 19.00.
Owner's Response: Many holidaymakers have returned again and again to this apartment because it is so comfortable, is such good value and because it is in a wonderful location - within easy reach of Salzburg airport, quietly situated at the end of a cul de sac, lovely views, walking paths from the door-step, 350 metres from the well-stocked supermarket & friendly, efficient tourist office and half a mile from the delightful village centre of St Gilgen which features in many holiday brochures.

The issues referrred to have been fixed by the resident agent. He is quite efficient and would have done so within 24 hours had this holidaymaker contacted him.

Furniture in the lounge and dining area is of a traditional Austrian style in antique oak, all beautifully co-ordinated, exactly as in the photographs. View from the balcony is also as per the property photographs - shrubs, trees, lawn (& car park) at the bottom, part of Lake Wolfgang in the middle background and then fabulous mountains on either side of Wolfgangsee.

The local authority was notified by the agent about the failed street light - it was fixed promptly. Location of the flat is up a gentle hill - the short climb is well worth while for the great views.

Washing machine usage restictions are to ensure quietness for other residents; however, an exception can be made by the agent, if he is contacted.

Other guests have not had problems with UK adapters -- but they do need to be of good quality. Spare blankets have been aired - they are hardly used by anyone because there are already 2 duvets per person. There is plenty of spare bedlinen. Coasters, door mat & light fitting have been replaced but not the charming patio table & chairs.

This is an outstanding value flat according to most previous guests, accommodating up to 5 persons in 53 sq m of space and you'll get the full Austrian experience in this area - wonderful mountains, cable cars for easy access to the tops, a clean region free of litter, traditional and friendly hospitality, safe & crime-free and lots of choice in activities.
