Located in the old centre of Aix-en-Provence in a 17th century building facing south, this first-floor apartment looks out onto the Forum des Cardeurs and is a stone's throw away from Thermes Sextius (thalassotherapy 'à la carte'), the cathedral, Théâtre de l'Archevêché, the local food and textile markets, and events like the opera festival.
It is a 5-minute walk from the famous Cours Mirabeau, La Rotonde restaurant, and Musée Granet.
This spacious apartment measures 46 sq.m with a mezzanine of 12 sq.m. It has been beautifully renovated combining comfort and charm to make it a stunning place. It is beautifully decorated and features top quality renovations, including a French-style ceiling. The apartment faces the south with a clear view (no buildings directly across from it) of the beautiful Place des Cardeurs.
You will be in the centre of the old city, meaning that you can reach everything on foot, including: the market (organic fruits and vegetables sold every day only 300 m away), shopping, cinemas, restaurants, shows (at the Grand Théatre de Provence and Pavillon Noir), the rest of the city centre, and Paul Cézanne's favourite spots, like his studio (Atelier de Cézanne), Carrières de Bibémus, the Provencal house in Jas-de-Bouffan, etc.

In either a car or bus, you can visit what lies around Aix-en-Provence, such as: Montagne Sainte-Victoire (for walking or hiking) and the village of Vauvenargues (Picasso's castle), the former Roman city of Arles, the Camargue wildlands, the Luberon region and its perched villages, Côte Bleue and the sea, Marseille and its old harbour and rocky inlets, etc. Avignon and Nîmes are also not far away.
In the apartment, you will find all the tourist brochures and information you need to organize your excursions. There are also a number of books on the region, a list of restaurants we like in Aix-en-Provence, and a wheeled cart for when you go to the market.
At the entrance, you will find some basic groceries, like tea, coffee, sugar, etc. so that you do not have to buy everything.
Linens are provided.
We're back home physically, but mentally we are still back in this great apartment in Aix. Helene (the owner) was easy to deal with, speaks English, and was helpful with local information. Located 1 floor up from street level this modern and sparking clean apartment overlooks an open air plaza (approx. 3 acres). With the shutters and windows closed, it was dead quiet, but we enjoyed watching the street scene below. We would definitely recommend it to friends
Great location. Very clean with all you need provided in the kitchen. The owner was really helpful. Highly recommended. Really enjoyed a day trip to Cassis. Also enjoyed visiting the studio of Cezanne.
Our family of four enjoyed two incredible weeks at Helene and Fabrice's charming apartment - a highlight of our European holiday. The location is ideal - facing a pedestrian square with cafes and restaurants spilling out over the cobblestones. Throw open the windows in the evening and enjoy a lively buzz of happy diners and street musicians from the comfort of your own living room. Shutter up when it's time to go to bed and enjoy a quiet rest.
The neighbourhood has everything you want for a leisurely city break: daily markets, bakeries, cafes and boutique shopping through a lovely warren of beautiful French architecture. Funnel down to the Cours Mirabeau in minutes or pick up your car at one of the peripheral parking lots and head out in any direction for a Provencal adventure or time at one of the Cote d'Azur beaches.
Fabrice and Helene provide everything you need for self-catering in great comfort. Our kids - aged 9 and 14 - loved the loft sleeping area and we all enjoyed plenty of elbow room in our down time. The owners were very attentive to our arrival and checked in with us throughout our stay to ensure that we were comfortable and made the most of our time in Aix.
I would not hesitate to recommend this apartment to anyone and we hope to return some day!
The apartment is charming and wonderfully appointed- a great location.
The hosts are warm and friendly and very helpful. they even left me a few groceries so I could start my vacation without worry! I would absolutely come back to stay again and hope to return soon.
Our trip to Europe this summer was fabulous and our stay at this apartment was a great choice for our family. The location is very central so we were able to walk anywhere in the city. The daily market only a few steps away was super handy. The kitchen and bathroom were new, clean and well equipped. The hosts were attuned to our needs - very friendly and helpful. Couldn't really ask for anything more.
We (husband, wife, teenage son) recently stayed 5 weeks in Hélène and Fabrice’s fabulous and comfortable apartment, within a few minutes walk to the markets and sights of old town and Cours Mirabeau. We agree with all the great things that the other reviewer’s have said, including how friendly and accommodating are hosts were. We hope to come back to Aix and would absolutely stay here again. A few other observations:
The square footage listed in Homeaway (46 m2) does not include the loft sleeping area. That is extra.
The appointments and fixtures are very nice and modern. Great lighting in the bathroom, bedroom and kitchen.
The apartment is very well stocked with all the basic necessities including some starter food. Better than any place we have ever stayed. And there are maps and a lot of other tourist information available.
There is a lot of closet/shelf space for storing clothes.
There is a separate bathtub and shower and the toilet is in a little cubbyhole in the bathroom, making the bathroom amenable to multiple users. There is plenty of hot water and the rain shower is fantastic.
Our hosts washed our towels and linens periodically during our stay.
The square outside the apartment is lively, but not objectionable. However, if you want quiet the windows are practically soundproof when you close them.
Note that the kitchen has miniblinds covering windows looking into the bedroom. Also, the bedroom entrance does not have a door. So the bedroom does not have a great deal of privacy.
The old town area of Aix is a wonderful place to stay and stroll around. We just loved being immersed in it. And we found Aix to be an excellent base for visiting the places of Provence. We rented a car for 3 weeks and were able to do day trips all over Provence. We visited Arles to the west, the Luberon region (Lourmarin, Bonnieux, Goult, Gordes, Menerbes, L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Roussillon) to the north, Cassis to the south, and Cannes, Nice, St.Paul de Vence to the east on numerous day trips from Aix. Provence in general is a beautiful area and the journeys themselves are as good as the destinations. We would highly recommend Aix as a base for exploring Provence. For our extended car rental we used kemwel.com and only paid about 14 Euros/day. And we paid for 1-month parking for 25 Euros at the Park&Ride on the north side of Provence. We would catch bus #7 to and from the car park. It is free for the ride from the car park into old town.
In the ancient capital of Provence, Aix-en-Provence, the city of Roi René d'Anjou, in the heart of the old town centre, this building overlooks the end of the Forum des Cardeurs, one of the most beautiful squares in Aix-en-Provence and also the largest (which explains why there are no buildings directly across from it). Because it faces south, the apartment is flooded with sunshine, even during the winter.
About 200 metres away, you will find the square containing city hall (Place de la Mairie) with its flower market and daily local food market.
Approximately 100 metres from the apartment, you will find Thermes Sextius, a great place to relax, rejuvenate, and enjoy the wonderful hydrotherapy offered at this spa (you can also visit their website).
Place des Cardeurs is very close to Théâtre de l'Archevêché, a main attraction that hosts the opera festival in Aix-en-Provence (you can visit their website).
From Aix-en-Provence, you can also visit:
- The Luberon region: Gordes, Bonnieux, Lourmarin, Cucuron, etc.
- The Alpilles: Les-Baux-de-Provence, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, etc.
- Camargue: Arles, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, Salin-de-Giraud, etc.
- Côte Bleue: Sausset-les-Pins, La Couronne, Carro, Carry-le-Rouet, etc.
- Calanques de Marseille: Cassis, Sormiou, Morgiou, etc.
- Alpes-de-Haute-Provence: Gap and Sisteron for day-trips (visit the Provence website)
From Aix-en-Provence, you can take a day-trip to Avignon (nicknamed the City of Popes), the Roman cities of Nîmes and Arles, and Nice and the French Riviera.
You could make it a two-day trip and visit other places along the French Riviera, like Saint-Tropez and Marseille, with its old port, Île du Frioul, and more.
Other things you can do in Aix-en-Provence include:
- take Provencal cooking courses with top chefs;
- practice your drawing or painting skills in the Aix countryside;
- take French classes for foreigners run by language specialists;
- taste the wines of Provence and take a course on wine;
- learn more about Paul Cézanne and his studio; or
- stay in Aix-en-Provence and discover the city of Roi René d'Anjou, the ancient capital of Provence.
