The Marais is an historic district (not administrative) in Paris located in a portion of third and fourth arrondissements, on the right bank of the Seine. It is bounded on the west by the Rue Beaubourg, east by the Boulevards, north along the Rue de Bretagne and south by the Seine.?The Marais (which translates literally to “swamp”) is a former marshland occupied from the twelfth century by religious orders (most notably the storied Templars). In the early seventeenth century, following the construction of the Place des Vosges in the heart of the Marais, this district, hitherto peripheral, became the preferred place of residence of the Parisian nobility. Many mansions built in that era remain today. In the middle of the eighteenth century the area was deserted by the Paris elite in favor of the Faubourg Saint-Honoré and Faubourg Saint-Germain that offered more room for expansion – a process that came to a hault with the French Revolution. The Marais is now occupied by a fashionable population of artists and artisans and its old streets and gorgeous buildings are bustling year-round.

We stayed in Sept - had perfect weather! Apt was great - centrally located, with a health food store on the corner, Monoprix a couple blocks, and great restaurants all around and Metro. The apt was perfect for our stay, particularly nice at night with the lighting. Bed comfy, washer-dryer great to have! We had a great stay. Tina and Jade
