THE TOWN:
Ferrara, one of Italy's historical jewels, is a famous city of art, with many attractions.A walled city,it boasts the Estense Castle - it's moat and drawbridges - once home of the Este family & the notorious Lucrezia Borgia, the beautifully façaded Romanic/Gothic St.George's Cathedral & the majestic Palazzo Diamanti (exhibitions of famous artists twice a year & so called because of it's unusual construction) as well as museums, art galleries, markets & places of interest.Enjoy exploring the old cobbled streets and alley ways of this historic town! In May,the 'Palio' is held & the famous 'Mille Miglia' (Veteran Car Ralley) has an overnight stop in the Centre.August brings street entertainers (Buskers) from all over the world, for a week of music and singing. Hot Air Balloon(2nd last week of Sept.) & Firework festivals are also 'fun' events. In summer numerous free concerts and shows are held under the stars and on the 1st weekend each month, there is an antique market in the main square.
LOCAL FOOD:
It's an experience and an absolute 'must' to try the local dishes, 'cappellacci' (delicious egg pasta 'tortelloni' filled with pumpkin and parmesan cheese), 'pasticcio' (macaroni with a meat sauce and bechamel in a short crust pastry) and the famous 'Salama da Sugo', all of which go together with the unusual shaped 'coppia', the famed Ferrara bread. In and around the town, there are also many ethnic restaurants, so you can take your pick!

Nearby Comacchio, famous for it's eels (which come to breed in marshes),the remains of the necropolis of Spina (a sunken Greek-Estruscan city - 400 B.C.) & the relics of a Roman ship found in the muddy marshes & now carefully housed in a museum with it's artifacts. A bit further north on the coast is the old Romanic abbey of Pomposa, with its beautiful bell-tower (once a lighthouse),overlooking the wetlands.
