We loved this house so much we have already booked it for next year! The positive: the deck looking out over the tide pools, quiet and peaceful, snorkeling was amazing, house comfortable and clean. The negative: nope none!
We found this house very comfortable, yes it is older and not fancy but then we are older and not fancy! It is a long way to the store but the best snorkeling that we have ever experienced is in your back yard! You do want a rental car if you stay here!
My Husband and I stayed for a week at this cottage as a nice getaway without kids. It was our first time staying on the east side of the big island. On the drive from the airport we loved how it felt like we were getting out of the city and there was no cars around. The Cottage had hawaiian character and was equipped with everything we needed. The highlight was the lanai overlooking the kapoho tidepools. Although it got busy around the tidepool during the day, visitors were respectful. In the evening time it was very quiet and even though the homes are fairly close together, it didn't feel like it. The Cottage was clean upon arrival and even had beautiful flowers and music playing. There was a minor repair during our stay and the management company was very quick to respond and took care of it promptly. The snorkeling in the tidepools is amazing, the best snorkeling anywhere we have traveled. We were so excited to swim with a turtle one of the days we were there. We look forward to bringing our kids back to this location because the tidepools are so calm right out the back yard, I know they would be safe and they wouldn't have to go far to see numerous species of fish. Thanks for an amazing experience!
The Kapoho Tidepools are a unique environment for snorkeling, with easy entry into sheltered water featuring beautiful coral and abundant marine life. Hale Hui is suspended above its own shallow mini-tidepool, providing views of little butterflyfish and Moorish Idols right below the lanai, and giving easy access to the deeper water across the lava shelf. The lush green forest area is filled with birds, and the frog chorus at night is very jungly.
The house itself is quite rustic. Unlike many vrbo properties that are lived in by an owner much of the time, this one appears to be always used as a rental. That lack of a loving hand to set everything right at intervals shows in the details. The management company is very available and responsive, but things like screens and doors that can deteriorate quickly in this wet, salty environment could use an overhaul. The outdoor furniture is also showing the effects of weathering and age.
If you come to Hale Hui prepared for a rustic cabin in a beautiful location, you won't be disappointed. Late afternoon on the lanai, with the seabirds finding their night roosts, the songbirds getting in a few last numbers, the frogs tuning up, the sun sinking toward Mauna Loa, the waves crashing on the outer reef, and the soaring clouds reflected on the calm water of the tidepools makes it easy to overlook the minor flaws in the building. The nice little gas BBQ also helps, and the bed is comfortable. It isn't perfect in every respect, but the things that are perfect more than make up for the rest.
Myself & my wife have been renting the Oceanfront Cottage for yrs. Usually 2 to 3 months at a time. It has such a remarkable location situated on the Tidepool. The view over not only the Tidepool, but also seeing and hearing the surf, just adds to one's vacation/getaway. I tell my friends that just below the outside deck, I can swim with turtles and enjoy being in my own aquarium. To be able to see so many fish, corals, and other assorted sea life at arms length is something that you will remember FOREVER!!!
The cottage itself is cute and provides you with everything one needs to enjoy the area. Only about 35 miles from Hilo, a little over 2 hours from Kona and the volcano is about an hour away. Just 1 mile down scenic 'red road' there is a park with an acre warm pond heated naturally and kept at a perfect temperature by the surf.
There is bus service, but a car is really best to enjoy the entire Puna area.
We highly recommend a stay at the cottage if one decides on the Big Island as their destination.
Even though we live here now, we continue to rent the Oceanfront Cottage as 'OUR' very special getaway! Very enjoyable memories continue to happen here!
Seeing the constellation of 'The Southern Cross' from the deck to watching rainbows out over the water, to the fabulous sunrises and sunsets...., all...., only from this very small cluster of homes.
There is no other place like this, in the entire USA.
The cottage is perfect, and experience Aloha first hand from the management team, Mark, Ron & Jeana.
You will NOT be disappointed......
FROM THE GUESTBOOK: Our 2nd stay here at the Hale Hui, again another wonderful stay. For a delicious meal we suggest Kaleo's in Pahoa. And for fresh delicious Thai food, we loved Blue Moon Cafe in Hilo, they also serve American food. And don't miss the Hilo Farmers Market on Saturdays and Wednesdays. We enjoyed fresh fruits and veggies from here. The resident eel keeps getting bigger it seems - we loved watching him. We enjoyed viewing the pond in the evening with flashlights. One night we saw the biggest puffer fish ever! He must have been the size of a basketball! Thank you so much and aloha! The Schulte's - California
Wow. We loved this and will be back. We loved that they had snorkel gear for us, and the outside bathroom was perfect for peeling off our wet gear and showering off before going in the house. So private and quiet, we barely saw anyone the whole time we were there. Unlike my past trips, this one we spent almost every day just snorkeling, enjoying cocktails and laying around. I thought after one session of snorkeling I'd be done with it, but every day we'd find something different and it just felt refreshing and relaxing to float around out there in our private tidepools. We brought our ROKU player on the off-chance it would work, and it did. There's a newer HDTV there, the ROKU player was easy to set up and we watched lots of shows on Netflix. Other than wishing there was air conditioning, we had a great time. If you venture out, on the way to civilization at the intersection of a coupla of the jungle roads, is The Hot Dog Man. Try him out--just a guy from the mainland with a hot dog cart....sometimes there, sometimes not...just like everybody else in that part of the world. We went to Pahoa for food, drove to Volcano Nat'l park one day. Also went to Kona and around the entire island in one day....but really whenever we ventured out we just couldn't wait to get back to our house. It was like having our own private island, and it was easy not to feel guilty for not sprinting out to sight-see every day when we awoke to the surf and views and our private tidepools :)
