3 Self-catering holiday houses for 6-8, 2-4 and 2-3 people

The Mas de L'Elze is a rambling collection of old stone buildings, clinging to a sun-drenched, south facing slope on the edge of the Ardechois Cevennes. In the past, these buildings served a multitude of purposes typical of the local countryside: a silk-worm loft, a drying and smoking area for chestnuts, a barn for storing hay and raising geese and ducks for the 'gavage'. Now, they have been lovingly transformed into a set of completely independent luxury houses, from which you can fully appreciate the beauty and tranquility of the surrounding countryside. There are 3 gites at L'Elze. Two - La Clede and La Magnanerie - are small, open plan houses for 2/4 and 2/3 people respectively, while the third - La Grange, is a larger house which sleeps 6-8. All are completely independent and have private terraces for al fresco dining. For large groups it is always possible to rent a number of the gites together.

All houses share a large 15x5m swimming pool and jacuzzi and gym.

The local bar at just 2 minutes drive or a 20 minute walk does a great steak-frites and wonderful pizzas. But if you don't want to expend the effort just eat in! we'll provide a gourmet meal if you give us 24 hours notice.

La Grange is a house on two and a half levels for six people. It is the original barn of the mas; the goats had only just left the bottom floor when we started restoration! The entrance at road level leads into the kitchen and dining area, with a shower room behind. Above, there is a large mezzanine with two single beds. The living room, with a magnificent view towards the Tour de Brison in the south, is through a stone archway from the kitchen. Just in case you choose to take our holidays out of season, there is a large fireplace for the long winter evenings. The two main double bedrooms are downstairs, where the goats used to be! There is also a luxury bathroom and a 'cave' complete with washing machine. Outside, there is a large stone-paved patio with a walled flower garden; it is fully equipped with furniture and a BBQ.

Fabulous place to unwind!

Our family of five, including three teenagers, enjoyed a wonderful holiday in this stunning location. The house was very clean and the welcome very warm.
The situation and views from the property are glorious and the hosts, Bill and Carol, were very attentive, making us feel like honoured guests. The pool is just as beautiful as the pictures and our kids made the most of the other facilities - table football, gym equipment and the hot tub. This area of France is truly beautiful and the house, whilst quite remote, offers everything necessary for a relaxing break. There are not loads of 'attractions', but we liked the peace and tranquility.

Great place to stay

My wife and I stayed in La Magnanerie for a week and it was perfect. Stunning property, stunning views and great people.

Carol and Bill are excellent hosts. I would definitely recommend taking up the option of having an evening meal cooked by Carol whilst there as her cooking is amazing!!!

For cyclists this is a great part of France to ride in. Not as hilly as the Alps or Pyrenees but don't let that put you off. The hills are still challenging enough!!

We stayed in La Grange which felt quite spacious for the four of us and had everything we needed. Remote and quiet, this was the perfect place for a relaxing holiday.
Mas de L’Elze is a beautifully restored property with stunning views. With its ducks and chickens and cherry orchards we felt we were experiencing the rural idyll. We spent most of our time relaxing by the pool but also undertook some walks in the surrounding hills. The home grown produce for sale at Mas de L’Elze is an extra bonus and we particularly recommend the apple juice and the bottled cherries and peaches!
The owners were incredibly welcoming and friendly and we are seriously thinking of going back next year. Thank you for making our holiday such an enjoyable one.

Beautiful location, warm welcome!

We spent 2 weeks in the Clede property (1 adult and 2 children) and had a wonderfully relaxing time. The owners of the property were very helpful, warm and welcoming. The property was as described and the view from the pool absolutely gorgeous! We were about 20 minutes away from the nearest town, which was fine with us, lots of lovely walks in the area and the lovely pool to keep us occupied. I would definitely recommend this property.

nature gives you the energy

We rented 2 gites, at very short notice, but nevertheless, we felt very wellcome.
For the second time, we enjoyed our stay, specifically on the next items:
- wellcome by the owners, easy to communicate
- nice looking gites
- emazing views
- calmth
- swimming pool
- fact that my dog could come
- information at our disposal

Next time, we will also use the bikes I think and ask earlier a few references to make walks, go for dinner etc

If the owners could make improvements, maybe it would be in the bathrooms. The shower is not that practical and toilets do not always flush easily. I don't know if anyone uses a bidet, we don't, so we would put some shelves instead.
These remarks are no obstacle for us, just only hints.

What we do appreciate, in comparison with many other French accomodations, is that we do not have to sleep in the living room but we had a separate bedroom. For us, it is an important asset to realy relax!

Thanks for your posting. I wish you'd told us during your stay that you were having problems with the toilets and showers! Bill is very good at fixing plumbing problems. Nobody has said anything in the last 10 years - but perhaps you were unlucky.... As for the bidets, we do use them but perhaps we're old-fashioned.

We hope you will be back - for the 2nd time, so it seems you did like L'Elze just a bit in spite of the apparent downsides!

La Clede - the review

It was a lovely place to stay, the Gite has enough room for four and good facilities. The pool is wonderful and the jacuzzi good also. We did not use the gym. The local facilities are within driving distance, with the local bar being very friendly and serving good food. Mas d'Lelze is high up in the hills, hence the stunning views, but central enough for all the sights.

The Mas de L'Elze is right in the middle of the Ardechois Cevennes - magnificent countryside with rolling hills and rugged mountains, dropping down to crystal clear rivers in deep gorges. L'Elze faces due south so there is always sunshine. We are located at 550m so even when it is hot there is usually a refreshing breeze.

L'Elze is situated roughly halfway between Largentiere and Valgorge, some 30 kilometres south-west of Aubenas, in the Department of the Ardeche. We are between Provence and the Cevennes and the scenery is wonderful. There are far fewer tourists than in either of these more well-known areas.
