About Sally Cartwright

Hi this is a photo of Geoff and I, Bethan and Lewis on the roof terrace in 2006 when the house was first restored. We live in Northamptonshire and first visited Essaouira in 2004 and fell in love with the town and the wonderful people. Darsal was deralict when we first purchased it with no elcetricity or running water. We put a lot of time and thought into restoring the Riad and have had many lovely holidays there since. Bethan and Lewis still enjoy visiting and lots of happy memories of childhood holidays in Darsal.

Sally Cartwright purchased this house in 2004

Why Sally Cartwright chose Essaouira

Darsal is a lovely property, we loved Essaouira, it's people and the the old medina. It has a wonderful feel of being somewhere colourful and viberant, whilst being set in a quiet street in the centre, you can get away from it all and still only a stones throw from the beach, souks and cafe's.

What makes this house unique

Darsal is full of surprises, you approach it from a quiet narrow street and once you open the front dooe, you enter into a room with a little couryard and lovely sitting areas. It then goes on to the first floor with a light airy master bedroom and a second bedroom, with a mezzanine bed which we built especially for Lewis, as a den. He had seen one in another riad we had visited. the main lounge is on the next floor, all open plan and a lovely area for relaxing, reading and children to play. There is a kitchen area, great for taking cool drinks up to the terrace. Once up on the terrace is a little onsuite bedroom with a lovely large window to let in all the light. A brilliant house to explore!

Beautiful Darsal

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at Darsal, it's a great place, plenty of space, comfortable and good location. We have visited Essaouira many times and this is the best place to stay. Aida made us a wonderful breakfast every morning, and one evening she barbecued some fresh fish for us that we'd bought from the port... Delicious! We were also invited into the neighbours home one evening as they were having a party, live drumming and lots of dancing.. It was a real experience! When staying at Darsal you really feel like you're living among the local people of Essaouira who are such warm & friendly people. We will be back & it will definitely be Darsal again for us

A fabulous gem in the middle of the medina!

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough good things about this wonderful riad! Fouad, the house manager met us with the warmest smile (despite our flight being delayed by 4 hours!), and whisked us away to this wonderful little gem. After a comprehensive tour of the house we were left to settle and make ourselves at home, helped along by the wonderful food that Aieda had prepared! The riad was just perfect for us (3 generations ranging from 2 to 70 years old) there was plenty of space for us to spread out, our favourite spot was definitely the terrace where we enjoyed meals and relaxation time. The riad itself is beautiful and the attention to detail at every level is evident. The location of the riad is perfect, it is slap bang in the middle if the medina, with everything you will need on your doorstep.

Fouad and Aieda really enhanced our stay, Fouad was on hand to answer any questions and was able to organise a few trips for us, Aieda prepared breakfast each morning and even a few evening meals, she was also a great source of local knowledge!

In the lead up to the stay the owner provided a wide range of information and was able to organise airport pickups on arrival, this ensured a smooth arrival with no stress about transport! Communication with the owner was always quick and easy.

I guarantee that a stay here will leave a lasting impression!

Enchanting!

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful property, in absolute tip top condition, very central and yet private. The roof terraces were magical, as sheltered from the wind, and we found ourselves stargazing at night more than once. They could not have done more for us, and made our first trip to Essaouria more enjoyable. We will return without doubt with our daughter for a family holiday, and another time with our friends for a more adult vacation. Stunning!

Excellent and authentic riad in a charming town

  • 5 of 5

First of all a little about Essaouira. It is almost a magical place, small, but has the feel of a big town with a cosmopolitan population of artists. It is a place for art lovers! The medina is full of charm at all hours. You will enjoy exploring the many narrow streets and sipping coffee or mint tea at one of the many outside tables while watching people. Essaouira is always full of life, but you will feel safe. The views from the ramparts over the Atlantic Ocean are exhilarating and the sunsets truly spectacular.

Darsal: From the first moment we walked in the door we could feel that we made an excellent choice. The refurbishment and decor immediately transport you to the Moroccan atmosphere. The owner has certainly made sure that the finishes and furnishings are of the highest standard. There is everything you need to enjoy a comfortable stay. Also delightful to cook meals and enjoy in the delightful internal yard or the lounge upstairs - with fresh ingredients from the market it is impossible not to be tempted to use the fully stocked kitchen! We always looked forward to returning to the comfort and serenity of our dar after a day out. When our holiday was over, we found it difficult to leave and want to return as soon as possible. Darsal exceeded our expectations and it was so enjoyable to be inside this oasis of peace and charm.

Some words about the people taking care of Darsal: Fouad met us on our arrival outside Bab Marrakech and he was punctual and courteous. Aieda is a truly genuine and warm person. There wasn't a language problem as our language (Maltese) is in many ways close to arabic and we could converse at length about many things. She gave us all information and was always available to help if we needed anything. We enjoyed talking with her so much about family and many other things.

We were overcome by the charm of Essaouira and the people we met there, but the success of our stay was mainly due to the fact that we stayed in Darsal . This would definitely be our choice when we return.

Quaint Dar/Riad in the heart of essaouirs

  • 5 of 5

Taken to the property by the ever-friendly and helpful Faoud, we weren't sure what to expect when walking down a narrow cul-de-sac. It was a very pleasant surprise to find such a beautiful looked-after property just off one of the Medina streets. It had everything one needs and we felt that as a family of four we couldn't quite fill the whole building which had 3 full bedrooms and a mezzanine bed. Will certainly try to stay there again if we are ever back in Essaouira.

Beautiful Riad in Fantastic Location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Riad Darsal with our 3 children aged 5, 7 and 8 over New Year and had a wonderful time. The Riad is brilliantly situated in a quiet but convenient location. Fouad met us at the Medina entrance with a cart and transported our luggage (and children) to the House! He made us very welcome and was very helpful during our stay. Aidea cooked for two nights for us and her Tagines were delicious. The Riad is beautiful, well furnished and has a fantastic traditional feel. The open fire in the salon was a welcome bonus as the evenings were cool. It was lovely sitting on the terrace listening to the waves crashing and watching the seagulls, which for some reason were illuminated at night. I can thoroughly recommend staying at Riad Darsal and we will hopefully return before too long.

Essaouira his a charming ancient Medina (walled town), it has a colourful and vibrant center with many mysterious and interesting streets and souks to explore. All within walking distance are the historic Portuguese ramparts, a small working fishing port with it's traditional blue boats bringing in the daily catch and the 3 mile long beach, where there are a variety of water sports available. There are no cars allowed inside the Medina, which gives it a very hassle free atmosphere. There are plenty of restaurants which offer a variety of Moroccan, French and Italian cuisine. The climate is temperate and rarely gets above mid 30's. There are many sports and activities available in the area.

Other Activities: land yatching, kite surfing, camel riding, historic sites, small traditional port, souks, hamman, 4x4 off roading and quad biking
