Heaven!!

Review Submitted: May 18, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
When the gate swung open and I got my first glimpse of the stunning grounds that are the Quinta das Acacias I thought I was in the wrong place...someones private estate, a chic resort, Shangri la ??? I feel so lucky to have found this incredible place and imagine it will be a rare treat on my travels to find another that compares ...our immaculate cottage was perfectly equipped from the garden bbq to the perfectly equipped kitchen, there were even fresh herbs in the garden that we were invited to enjoy! But truely, the best part of this unique accommodation is the new friends we found in Ed and Bonita who both so obviously love their beautiful bit of paradise in the Azores. Thank you, Lisa & Terry USA
Owner's Response: Thank you for such kind words. We have worked delingently at everything in the quinta to make it an unforgetable holiday for each and everyone of you who wants to spend quiet time in the gardens. The cottages are made to create as much comfort to our guests as possible and for added interest, the manicured gardens have art sculptures to view while our guests stroll throughout the areas. Come join us in our little paradise.

A Garden in within a Garden

Mike & Kate Okehampton, Devon, UK.
Review Submitted: July 14, 2008 Date of Stay: March 2008
The Azores always were green even when I first encountered them nearly forty years ago, and despite the change for the majority of the island people in that time, from quiet poverty and dictatorial oppression to modern consumerist comfort complete with modern roads, (in places), fast cars and an abundance of supermarkets it still retains much of it's beauty and peace. It all seems very much like one huge garden. The most notable change for me was to find that the lupins which used to cover the island are all gone and now are replaced by the even more colourful azaleas. We went in the low season as we enjoy walking and that is best done in the cooler weather, nonetheless we had a marvellous time, the food was great and reasonably priced, the wine was plentiful and the people busy, varied, interesting and helpful. When our hire car broke down and our mobile phone was out of range, a passing motorcycle stopped, telephoned for help and stayed with us until the help arrived. The colourful Easter celebrations seemed to go on forever although the sudden explosions of the rockets bursting out over the sky were sometimes a little unsettling until you realised what was the source of the noise. Quinta das Acacias was a short bus ride away from town where there was plenty of shops, restaurants, history and the colourful market. The beach was about twenty minutes walk and the black volcanic sand was amongst the softest anywhere. The countryside offers some wonderful walks, enjoy a vigorous 12+ miles stroll around the rim of Sete da Cidadas in the West or a steep climb up from the South coast to Fogo.

Quinta das Acacias is a couple of acres of carefully tended beautiful garden with attractive home-made steel sculptures scattered around, they would make a wonderful souvenir and your host will make and sell you one if your baggage allowance will allow an additional 50 kilos or so. The bungalow units are scattered around so that individul privacy is assured. Our hosts were welcoming and hospitable. If you like loud music, parties into the small hours and plenty of lager this is not the place for you, if you like peace and serenity then stay awhile, we had three weeks, we should have had three months.

A bad point was the standard of driving, frequently every bit as bad as on the Portugese mainland. The Catholic faith still persists as a major part of life on the island, it must be a benificent God who protects the island's road users.

Marvelous!

Layr Arlington, MA USA
Review Submitted: July 13, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
There are so many wonderful things to say about Quinta das Acácias. First and foremost, Bonita and Ed are excellent hosts: when we mentioned being interested in hiking they suggested several trails and dropped off maps for us; they recommended restaurants and told us the best time to visit certain places. We even got to sample bananas from their banana trees! The accommodations were terrific, too. Our cottage was very comfortable, immaculately clean, quiet and centrally located (approx. 20 minutes from the airport and easy driving distance to all parts of the island). To top it all off, the grounds are lovely, filled with beautiful plants and sculptures (made by Ed). What a delightful place to stay.

Tender Loving Care

Jane and Chris Maidenhead, Berkshire, UK
Review Submitted: June 2, 2008 Date of Stay: May 2008
Out first trip to the Azores was made perfect by the fabulous accommodation, beautiful grounds and friendly hosts at this lovely property. A great place to relax and recharge your batteries or as a base to explore this wonderful island. Great restaurants around but you may need a little help to find them as this island is not at all "touristy". Our hosts were experts at helping us with maps and information.
Owner's Response: Thank you! Our undiscovered islands are still a little piece of heaven that Mother Nature intended it to be. As all our guests experience in our little paradise, traditions and cultural habits are very much visible in the everyday lifestyles of the people that have lived here for over five centuries.
