Viana do Castelo City Cottage Rental Photos and Description

1-bedroom and 2-bedroom farm cottages in quiet rural location

Two refurbished cottages at opposite ends of the owners' small-holding, amidst a garden overflowing with flowers and shrubs, orchard, vineyard, vegetable garden, along with bees, sheep, poultry and more. On the outskirts of a very attractive hillside village, with expansive views over the valley, especially from the large swimming pool. Casa do Valo has two storeys, with two bedrooms upstairs leading to a patio with barbecue and a pathway to the pool. Casa das Ovelhas has one bedroom and a particularly spectacular view over the valley from the large windows and the private lawned patio. The cottages have fully equipped kitchens and bathrooms and may be rented separately or together (to sleep up to 6 people). This is a really romantic spot all year round, quiet and very rural, yet with easy access to the beaches on the Costa Verde and to the historic villages and towns of the Minho region.

Beaches and golf: The family seaside resort of Vila Praia de Âncora is about 11km away, and either side of it, along a 50km stretch, are the many safe, clean beaches of the Costa Verde - surf beaches, sandy, rocky, wide, discreet, family, romantic beaches - you can go to a different one each day to suit your mood. At Afife there's a surfing beach (and surf/body boarding lessons); at Caminha there's a beach with one side on the Atlantic, the other on the River Minho; or you can hire a ferryman to take you out to a deserted island; on Serra de Arga there are fresh mountain pools and waterfalls (including one at Pincho, within walking distance of Casa do Valo); and there are also warm, sheltered river beaches on the Rivers Lima and Minho, within 15km.

For golfers, the excellent Ponte de Lima course is 27km away. Part of “a bucolic scenery of mountains, vineyards and fruit gardens”, is a course typical of the Minho region. Par 71, 6005m, including Portugal's longest hole at 622m (par 5).

Touring, tourism: For those who enjoy rural sightseeing, just touring around, or taking some long walks, there's the rugged, wild countryside of Peneda-Gerês National Park, & further away the Douro Valley provide plenty of opportunity. The villages and country lanes of Alto Minho, offer a landscape from an earlier era. Serra d’Arga (784m) provides great views in all directions, and the Lagoas nature reserve a chance to see some wetland wildlife. For more sophisticated entertainment, there's the Casino at Póvoa de Varzim, and plenty of history, culture and night-life in a dozen towns within a short drive. There's karting, canoeing, surfing, 10-pin bowling and fishing, and the World Heritage City of Oporto. The traditional Romarias, folklore, singing, dancing and decorative crafts and costumes provide an unusual taste of the local culture. And the famed cuisine of the Minho region can be found in restaurants galore.

BEAUTIFUL, AUTHENTIC RETREAT

  • 5 of 5
My partner and I stayed at the Casa dea Ovalhas for a few nights after touring around Portugal with mainstays in Lisbon and Oporto. We were looking for a rural retreat, full of local colour and character, yet not too far off the beaten track to challenge a couple's navigation/driving capabilities to uncomfortable limits. This was certainly the place.

Bergen's charming and detailed overview of the place and surrounds drew us in immediately and convinced us, even more than the photographs, that we had to stay. The booking process was straightforward, communication was prompt and clear, and the information provided in the cottage was extensive and personal, including hand- drawn maps and entertaining and informative reviews of restaurants in the local area.

The Casa is set nicely away in a private corner of a stunning landscape, allowing you to feel part of the rows of grapevines, fruit trees, flowers, and various other greenery. The light coming through the vines above you on various pathways in the grounds is so beautiful. Great for exploring, eating fruit straight from the tree, sipping vino verde while the sun sets and thoroughly winding down.

The Casa itself has an instantly homely feel, perfect for two, and has a fully-equipped and functional kitchen while maintaining it's rural character. Sharp knives are often a rare find in these cases, and we were grateful to find important attentions to detail.

The bed was supremely comfortable with beautiful morning views, and the bathroom modern with great shower and storage.

The whole house and utensils were immaculately clean throughout.

The only criticism from our stay was that an persistent visitor kept sneaking through the fence to join us at mealtimes which became a little trying. We are very animal friendly and loved the resident pets being able to pop in and say hello but it would have been preferable to keep them out at mealtimes as our four-legged friend became a little intrusive at the dinner table. Things got a little dangerous when he took an interest in the meat on the BBQ and almost cooked himself..
I'm sure this is a solvable problem though and it wouldn't keep us away.
Amelia and Manuel have created and maintain a truly beautiful home and we are lucky they choose to share it with others in such a considered way. We never felt we were imposing on their home and were left in total privacy while knowing we could call on them if needed. A unique and rewarding stay.

Owner's Response: It's reviews like this that make all the effort worthwhile. Thank you. Thanks, too, for not roasting Barrigas the cat!

VACATION

  • 4 of 5
The owners and family are nice people and made us very welcome despite the late arrival.
The view form the patio is wonderful.
The accommodation is basic but o.k. The bed was quite uncomfortable and moved to the fold up bed which was better but cumbersome to open and put away.
There was no Toaster or Washing machine as advertised.
Finding our way to the property in the dark down the narrow path was difficult on moonless nights, so we left the garden lights on the following night only to find they had been switched off!
We found having the garden watered, whilst having a patio breakfast rather disconcerting, but we did get eggybread served the next time it happened!

Owner's Response: I know these visitors had a great holiday, so their constructive criticism is very welcome.
The comfort of a bed is a very subjective thing, and we've had no previous complaints, but at least there was a back-up in the form of a sofa bed in the lounge. There is, in fact, a washing machine available for visitors' use, in an outbuilding a few steps away - but of course it was our fault these visitors weren't made aware of this. As for the toaster, it was broken the previous week, and not yet replaced - this has been rectified. In the meantime, there is a grill that could have been used for toasting.
And maybe the water spray in the garden turned out to be something of a relief, given the brilliant sunshine here during the summer months....
We take all our visitors' comments seriously, and always aim to make things as comfortable as possible. We're rewarded by the fact that people come again and again, and everyone seems to have a thoroughly good time.

A NÃO PERDER...

Passei 3 dias nesta casa e recomendo!

WONDERFUL WEEK AT CASA DAS OVELHAS

  • 5 of 5
An absolutely beautiful, tranquil place to stay. Thank you Bergen for the resturant reviews, they were indispensible! The description of the cottage/surroundings is very accurate - though it was even more beautiful than the photos had lead us to expect! Bergen, Manuel and Emilia were very welcoming, though as they were away during the week, it felt very private. The waterfalls that Bergen mentions in his pack are beautiful and well worth hunting out! The resturant on the beach in Afife (sorry can't remember the name, but it is in Bergen's pack) is stunning - amazing position, lovely food and incredibly friendly service. Though all of the resturants we went to were lovely!

Thanks for a great week, would not hesitate to recommend to friends who need a tranquil oasis to really relax in!

KLEIN PARADIJS

  • 4 of 5

Casa do Valo lies halfway up Serra de Arga, the highest point in the region, above a green valley amongst pine and eucalyptus trees. The view over the village is spectacular. It's in the middle of a triangle formed by Ponte de Lima (22km), Portugal's beautifully preserved oldest town; Viana do Castelo (15km), the region's fishing port and market town; and Vila Praia de Âncora (11km), a tranquil seaside resort and fishing village in the middle of the Costa Verde. The countryside is beautiful and unspoilt, the scattered villages quaint and rustic, and the local people enjoy a life that seems not to have changed for centuries. An idyllic paradise.
