Overview

Viana do Castelo City Cottage Rental Photos and Description

1-bedroom and 2-bedroom farm cottages in quiet rural location

Two refurbished cottages at opposite ends of the owners' small-holding, amidst a garden overflowing with flowers and shrubs, orchard, vineyard, vegetable garden, along with bees, sheep, poultry and more. On the outskirts of a very attractive hillside village, with expansive views over the valley, especially from the large swimming pool. Casa do Valo has two storeys, with two bedrooms upstairs leading to a patio with barbecue and a pathway to the pool. Casa das Ovelhas has one bedroom and a particularly spectacular view over the valley from the large windows and the private lawned patio. The cottages have fully equipped kitchens and bathrooms and may be rented separately or together (to sleep up to 6 people). This is a really romantic spot all year round, quiet and very rural, yet with easy access to the beaches on the Costa Verde and to the historic villages and towns of the Minho region.

Beaches and golf: The family seaside resort of Vila Praia de Âncora is about 11km away, and either side of it, along a 50km stretch, are the many safe, clean beaches of the Costa Verde - surf beaches, sandy, rocky, wide, discreet, family, romantic beaches - you can go to a different one each day to suit your mood. At Afife there's a surfing beach (and surf/body boarding lessons); at Caminha there's a beach with one side on the Atlantic, the other on the River Minho; or you can hire a ferryman to take you out to a deserted island; on Serra de Arga there are fresh mountain pools and waterfalls (including one at Pincho, within walking distance of Casa do Valo); and there are also warm, sheltered river beaches on the Rivers Lima and Minho, within 15km.

For golfers, the excellent Ponte de Lima course is 27km away. Part of “a bucolic scenery of mountains, vineyards and fruit gardens”, is a course typical of the Minho region. Par 71, 6005m, including Portugal's longest hole at 622m (par 5).

Touring, tourism: For those who enjoy rural sightseeing, just touring around, or taking some long walks, there's the rugged, wild countryside of Peneda-Gerês National Park, & further away the Douro Valley provide plenty of opportunity. The villages and country lanes of Alto Minho, offer a landscape from an earlier era. Serra d’Arga (784m) provides great views in all directions, and the Lagoas nature reserve a chance to see some wetland wildlife. For more sophisticated entertainment, there's the Casino at Póvoa de Varzim, and plenty of history, culture and night-life in a dozen towns within a short drive. There's karting, canoeing, surfing, 10-pin bowling and fishing, and the World Heritage City of Oporto. The traditional Romarias, folklore, singing, dancing and decorative crafts and costumes provide an unusual taste of the local culture. And the famed cuisine of the Minho region can be found in restaurants galore.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Everything at Casa do Valo was excellent – charming and generous hosts.

The property description was spot on – a beautiful and restful place and everything totally fit for purpose.

Bergen's restaurant guide was a real help too so many thanks for compiling that.

We look forward to coming back to Northern Portugal and would recommend all aspects of the break.

Highly recommendable

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent 12 days at Casa das Ovelhas. It is a wonderful place which guarantees relaxation and tranquility. We loved the peaceful moments sitting in the garden, looking into the valley and enjoying the pool. We found unique air, atmosphere, fragrances and light. The nicest holiday home we ever had for reading, cooking and enjoying the sun and the wines of the region.

In the very clean house you find the required equipment and Manuel and Emilia are adorable people who help whenever you need something. Stay here if you plan to come down. Using Amonde as your starting point you have the chance to see Viana do Castello, Guimarães, Braga, Caminha, Monção and many more pretty places.

amazing time

  • 5 of 5

We spend one amazing week in this house with small baby. The house is well equipped with the kitchen accessories, technic equipment, textiles: high quality bedding, were enough towels, owners left tablets for the dishwasher, and other detergents, that is very necessary in the first day, when we hadn’t time to get its in shop.

The owners, Manuel and Emilia are absolutely lovely people. The place is very peaceful. We walked here a lot, also going down from the mountain on natural terraces, or on the road paved by old stones, and simply enjoyed the beauty of nature, of houses, arrangement of the road.

There are a lot of opportunities to broaden horizons of the 2 years child in practice, not according to books: we got acquainted with cats, a dog, ducklings and ducks, hens, sheep. We saw as grow pears, plums, grapes, a kiwi, a fig and many other fruits growing.

Thanks for fine rest in lovely Portuguese countryside

Un séjour merveilleux !!!

  • 5 of 5

Perfect combination between nature and discovery!

  • 5 of 5

I really had a nice time at the house. It was more than I could have expected. It was really great to have a swimming pool next to your bedroom, so to say. Also the contact with the other families (staying in the other cottage) was very pleasant as there is some come company nearby then. The owners, Manuel and Emilia are absolutely lovely, and they have a lot to tell you about the region! Really the way I know Portuguese (and I know, as I have lived there many years); so gentl, kind and always helpful. Whenever we needed anyhing (which was not often!) they were there to help or just have a chat!!

What I liked about the house and the service was the weekly cleaning. And cleaning really means cleaning in Portugal!!. Also very handy is the washing machine facility. In the small house itself we had everything we needed for a wonderful relaxing holiday!

Excellent Idyllic Holiday Destination

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from our 5 day trip to Casa Do Valo and all I can say is that it was exactly what we wanted. A perfectly sized cottage for a couple or a small family, in beautiful peaceful valley within a incredibly well maintained garden.

The location is ideal for both trips to the beach and trips further inland up the Lima and Minho rivers and even across to the stunning Peneda-Gerês National Park.

We were made to feel welcome by Bergen and the owners of the cottage as soon as we arrived (which was a relatively painless 60min trip from Oporto), being supplied with basic provisions, and a great guide to the local area written by Bergen, including an excellent set of reviews of the best local eateries.

Although we didnt spend much time by the pool, it was in a great location with sun all day long, warm well into the evening.

Ultimately, this was great base in beautiful surroundings for those who want a bit of peace and quiet and the chance to explore and experience the best of the Minho region and further afield in Northen Portugal.

Peaceful cottage in the mountains

  • 3 of 5

My family spend two weeks in the cottage. The owners are very friendly and the place is very peaceful. This is real portuguese countryside as there are only local people around. The nearest town and seaside is 12-15 Km away. The drive to Porto airport is a good 90 minutes if you do not know the area.

If you are looking for a very peaceful ad quiet holidays this is the place. There is very little to do unless you are prepared to drive. You can do walks in the mountains. It is not recommended for families with young children.

The house is faily dark and could do with more lighting. and entretainment like cable, DVD, books and games.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed it. In fact, there is satellite TV, DVD (and some DVD films that guests have left for others) and a small multi-lingual library of novels and guide books. But we agree, it is a peaceful place, and we'll be putting some games in the cottage too, for those really quiet moments.

Casa do Valo lies halfway up Serra de Arga, the highest point in the region, above a green valley amongst pine and eucalyptus trees. The view over the village is spectacular. It's in the middle of a triangle formed by Ponte de Lima (22km), Portugal's beautifully preserved oldest town; Viana do Castelo (15km), the region's fishing port and market town; and Vila Praia de Âncora (11km), a tranquil seaside resort and fishing village in the middle of the Costa Verde. The countryside is beautiful and unspoilt, the scattered villages quaint and rustic, and the local people enjoy a life that seems not to have changed for centuries. An idyllic paradise.
