Castelou is a traditional building which, with the castle and the old cemetery, form a beautiful architectural complex on top of the village of St Rome.

From the house you have an exceptional view of the village, its hilly surroundings and on the rock of Combalou Roquefort caves site.

Renovated in 2006, our home offers for 2-6 persons modern interiors with fully equipped kitchen, living room with wood stove, 2 bedrooms each with bathroom, shower and toilet and a small attic room for 2 to 4 people . The house has 2 separate entrances, 2 cellars and an extra toilet.

In the evening, the gravelled terrace give you an end quiet day in a warm atmosphere.

Just 100 km from the Mediterranean coast and its flood of tourists is the famous limestone plateau of Larzac, the largest of the Grands Causses region vast arid plateau with its strange limestone formations and cut by the Tarn Gorges , Jonte and Dourbie.

Arid in summer, in winter swept by an icy wind, it is characterized by a mosaic of evergreens, boxwood and juniper moors, lawns to large and small grasses and gray rock formations with bizarre shapes. No less than 2,000 species of flowers growing there, 40% of the French flora and 60 species of orchids have been recorded on the census hundred in France.

The Causses are also home to a diversity of wildlife. The area is particularly popular with birders (golden eagle, Bonelli's eagle, vulture, black vulture, chough, etc..).

Traces of ancient colonization of inhospitable plateau of Larzac are visible in many places, the Aveyron department of France being the richest in megaliths.

Later a man leave another feature traces; in the 12th century the Templars acquired the land for building cities.

In the 15th century, after the dissolution of the Order by the Pope, the Holy cities Eulalie de Cernon Couvertoirade, Cavalry, St Jean d'Alcas, the Le Viala No Jaux will be administered and fortified by the Hospitallers.

The architectural remains from this period are partly remarkably well preserved. The most interesting stage of the Circuit of the Larzac Templar and Hospitaller is Couvertoirade, impressive medieval town completely surrounded by a fortified wall with towers and walls erected by the Hospitallers, characterized by a remarkable state of preservation.

Behind the walls, with its narrow cobbled streets, old houses in which are installed workshops and shops of many craftspeople, visitors are truly immersed in the Middle Ages.

Outside the fortifications, one can admire the most beautiful lavognes Causses.

The Templar Commandery and Hospital Sainte Eulalie de Cernon, the largest in the south of France, is considered the best preserved in France. It is the testimony of the presence of religious and military orders in the West for six centuries. The Templars settled in Sainte Eulalie in 1153 and become the main landowners of Larzac. The well-preserved medieval town is enclosed by walls and speaker towers, it houses a Romanesque church and buildings of the Commandery.

The Templar Cavalry site is a fortified village of Larzac being restored, pregnant by a wall with battlements and a large door, the houses of the fifteenth and seventeenth century hotels.

The Templar site of Saint-Jean d'Alcas is a beautiful small fortified village with a pregnant framed by four corner towers identifying two parallel streets lined with medieval houses with mullioned windows, scheduling an astonishing regularity and that must construction to the abbess of the Abbey of Nonenque.

For those who love to cook and appreciate good food, The Castelou is a great place. Every day you will find fresh, in Millau in the market (Wednesday and Friday hours from August to December 30 - July / August on Monday evenings) or the halls (Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday morning) at the St Affrique market on Saturday from 8 to 13 hours or on Country Farmers markets. Having picked thyme and other herbs at a short walk behind the castle, it was around 19 hours, when the temperature became pleasant, which you can then enjoy on the terrace small prepared meals.

The proximity of the Roquefort Caves encourage you snuff different recipes using this amazing cheese and visit the caves, natural cavities formed in the rock slides following the collapse of the cornice of the limestone plateau Combalou, broken by faults which provide an air circulation between the inside and outside and thus maintain a constant temperature and a favorable moisture refining Roquefort. Tours all year, but it is recommended that these visits between April and August during the ripening period.

Millau Aveyron is the sub-prefecture and has about 25 000 inhabitants. Roman city, capital of the glove, and in the 1970s, center of resistance against the extension of the military camp of the Larzac, Millau is a friendly and picturesque city. Random your walks, you will discover a Mediterranean climate in the narrow streets of the old town with its squares lined with plane trees, shops, restaurants, lively outdoor cafes and shops, its market and its markets with regional products.

With its natural resources, Millau, capital of Causses, the confluence of the Gorges de la Jonte, Tarn and Dourbie is dominated by limestone cliffs, unique sites for hang-gliding and paragliding.

The Cernon has a justified reputation for excellent trout stream. Clear water, limestone, are well oxygenated for strong growth farios. The herd is outstanding in quality and quantity.

The stream passing Sainte-Eulalie-de-Cernon grows very quickly and, three kilometers down, Lapanouse-de-Cernon, he already has a good fish value.

Sainte-Eulalie-de-Cernon in Saint-Rome-de-Cernon it flows in a wild valley with a near vertical drop of four hundred meters above the Larzac plateau. Access is easy, however, because a very narrow and picturesque road winds through the valley following exactly all the meanderings of the river allow many places to park without problems. The banks are often congested with dense vegetation canopy and the bed is made of alternating flat rocks carved by erosion and small pebbles. Fishing is better by practicing in the water rather than the bank. (See morganmiranda. Free. Fr / Larzac. Htm)

Millau Viaduct:

The tallest vehicular bridge in the world with a steel deck 2,4 km long and supported by masts supported by seven concrete piers crosses the Tarn valley at a height of 270 m at the highest point. The viaduct is a must see attraction for both bold project, technological prowess, majestic architecture and discreet inscription in a high quality landscape.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Quel bon souvenir ! Encore merci...

Restauration réussie

  • 5 of 5

Bravo

Très bonne semaine au Castelou!!

  • 5 of 5
