BEAUTIFUL HOME, SUPERB LOCATION, LOVELY OWNERS

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I spent a glorious June week here with our two young children and their grandparents. The photos and descriptions do not deceive -- Pat and Kay have all their bases covered. The house is nicely appointed and immaculately maintained. There is plenty of space, even for three generations! The view is spectacular and ever-changing. The front garden is lush and lovely. The terrace is a boon. The silence is uninterrupted.

We had everything we needed, and Pat and Kay were most hospitable and obliging without being in any way intrusive.

It's about a 2-minute walk to a fishing harbour, from which you can stroll out along a rocky strand for even better views of the mountains to the east and the inlet to the south. It's a short drive (or pleasant ~30-minute walk) to Ardgroom, which has a shop-cum-internet cafe, a gas station, and nice little pub. There are mountain lakes, waterfalls, tranquil beaches, and lovely walks, all within a short (and scenic) drive of the house. Pallas Lodge is the ideal base from which to explore the Beara Peninsula, a gorgeous (rain or shine), uncrowded, unhurried corner of Ireland.

Thank you, Pat and Kay!

NOTHING SHORT OF FABULOUS!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I, along with another couple, stayed in Pat and Kay's beautiful home for a week this past May. Following a harrowing drive from Dublin, all stress was gone upon entering the home. Pat was there to meet us, gave us a tour, and even bought us our first beer down at the pub. The house itself is immaculate. There is easily enough space for three couples to come and stay and have their own space. There are 2 seating areas to relax in, but by far the most spectacular feature of this home is the outdoor space. There is a beautiful garden out back with a view. The perfect place to come and sit for coffee in the morning, or wine in the evening. The sheep, cows, bunnies, and the neighborhood fox will be the only company in this very tranquil space. Additionally, the folks in the town of Ardgroom are the most welcoming bunch. The store (Harringtons) has everything you could need, and the pub is perfect. Great food, and great beer...of course. From the house, we set out each day to a different part of the Southwest of Ireland, whether it be close towns like Kenmare, Macroom, or Castletownbare, or ones further away like Kinsale, Killarney, or Dingle. All can be reached in 2-3 hours, and then you have this wonderful house to come home to and relax after a day of driving. It is a "MUST SEE". Don't miss the opportunity.

A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY!

  • 5 of 5
Pallas Lodge was fantastic! The pictures and descriptions don't do it justice . . the home was very comfortable and spacious and extremely clean. Pat and Kay have thought of everything. There were 3 living areas (main living area with fireplace, the sunroom-surrounded by windows with lots of light and gorgeous scenery, and an upstairs loft get-away - off of the 3rd bedroom. It was a wonderful get-away . . very quiet and very peaceful. We drove all over southwest Ireland during our stay at Pallas Lodge (Pat had given us great information and maps), but the best of SW Ireland was the Ring of Beara - which was only just a few kilometers from the house! The tour books all tout the Ring of Kerry - which was very nice - but did not compare to the Ring of Beara. Besides the wide variety of scenery, there were no buses to contend with on those small roads. There were many places to hike and explore. We saw stone circles, castles, and majestic scenery. The many people we met were absolutely charming and very helpful. Our favorite towns were Castletownbere and Kenmare. We ate at family-owned pubs, listened to live traditional music, and experienced "craic"! The town of Ardgroom has a one-stop shop, Harrington's, for all your needs, including internet service. I would stay here again and again and would definitely recommend Pallas Lodge to anyone wanting to stay in SW Ireland - you must have a car to make the most of the area. Killharney National Park is less than an hour away and is also a jewel. My Mom, my Aunt and I are very happy that we spent the majority of our vacation time in the Cork/Kerry areas - it was the best of the best! And Pallas Lodge was an extremely comfortable place to begin and end our days. Orginally, our vacation plans were to see and do as much as we could with our time in Ireland . . but many mornings as we drank our coffee and watched Ardgroom bay and the sheep, cattle and bunnies graze around the cottage, we found ourselves pleasantly relaxed and willing to throw out our pre-planned iternaries for a slower, more enjoyable pace and really experience Ireland. Thank you.

EXTREMELY NICE HOLIDAY HOME

  • 5 of 5
Stay in this house if you get the chance!! I would recommend this place to anyone interested in staying in the West of Ireland as it was perfect for our vacation to West Cork. It is as described and is actually nicer in person than in the pictures. It is in a very pastoral setting right on the scenic "Ring of Beara" and only half an hour's drive from the start of the "Ring of Kerry." On beautiful days it is private enough to open up the windows and enjoy the fresh sea breezes all day without a need for anything more.

If you get restless, there is a nice little village with a general store, internet access, and a cozy little pub less than a couple miles away. There is also some outstanding hiking in the area with plenty of ancient stones and historic sites to explore. We weren't very adventurous athletically, but I'd bet in an outdoors like the Beara you could find plenty to keep yourself active as well, just ask the owners who are knowledgeable about the area and happy to help.

The owners were also incredibly hospitable to us. We had difficulty getting to the house on the first day since most car rentals were booked for a busy tourist weekend, but the owner waited for us until very late and even had a fire going when we got there. We couldn't have been more relieved and grateful!

JUST WONDERFUL

  • 5 of 5
Saying our stay in Pallas Lodge was perfect would be an understatement. The house with its spacious and tastefuly furnished rooms immediately makes you feel at home and is in a perfect state. Nothing that you may expect from a modern holiday home is missing - the descriptions in the internet presentation are precise and accurate.

Kay and Pat were wonderful hosts from the very beginning. They provided us with instructions for the way from Dublin to Ardgroom, took care that there was everything in the house to get us over the first weekend and gave us an introduction in what to do and where to go around Beara Peninsula upon our arrival.

Fishing is great from the cliffs near the house, there are wonderful gardens to visit (e.g. Bantry, Mucross and Dereen Gardens and more) and we had wonderful trips to Dursey Island and along the Ring og Beara.

Ardgroom offers basic shopping opportunities, a Petrol station and a Pub (The Village Inn which we can recommend); more sophisticated shops can be found in Castletownbere and Kenmare.

We hope to spend our holiday in Pallas Lodge next year again.

WONDERFUL TIME ON BEARA PENINSULA

  • 5 of 5
Saying our time in Pallas Lodge was perfect would be an understatement. The house and the garden more than fulfill the expectations raised by the internet presentation. Nothing you expect from a modern top class holiday home is missing and everything is in a perfect state.

The rooms are spacious, tastefully furnished and the house immediately makes you feel at home. Kay and Pat were wonderful hosts and took care that there was enough food in the house for the weekend we arrived (and more). Upon our arrival, they gave us a detailed overview on what to do on Beara, where to go fishing, where to have a walk and where to go for dinner (the Village Inn in Ardgroom, which we can recommend). A shop and a Petrol Station are nearby, Castletownbere and Kenmare offer more shopping opportunities. There are beautiful Gardens to see (Bantry, Dereen Garden) and walks along the well marked Ring of Beara Trail are really exciting.

We definitely can recommend to spend a holiday in Pallas Lodge, as we intend to do next year again.

Pallas Lodge enjoys magnificent views over Ardgroom Harbour, the Caha Mountains on the Beara Peninsula and the Kerry Mountains. It is situated on the scenic Ring of Beara and it is adjacent to the Beara Way. From here, you will enjoy long walks, with fine views over Kenmare Bay. The attractive village of Ardgroom is nearby (3 km) and it has a restaurant, a pub, a shop, a gas station and a church. Castletownbere (10 mls) is a large fishing port which overlooks Bere Island that can be visited by ferry. There are excellent stone circle and ring-fort sites near the town. These locations offer picturesque views of the Bantry Bay. Places to visit include the Ring of Beara, Dursey Island via cable car, Dunboy Woods and Castle, the Healy Pass. The Italian Gardens on Garnish Island, Glengarriff, and noted for its tropical plants, and Dereen subtropical Gardens at Lauragh. A visit to Kenmare and its many restaurants may be a good choice.

Golf: Golf can be played at nearby Castletownbere, which is a beautiful 9-hole course with the sea as an extra challenge. Booking is not always necessary. Kenmare also provides a challenging 18-hole course which is generally available.
