Photos and Description of the Figueres area vacation apartment rental First floor apt sleeps 4 (max 5) , Ground floor apt sleeps 4 (max 5)

Two self-catering, fully independent apartments in the Catalan village of Rabós, tastefully converted with cottage-style bedrooms, comfortable beds, modern bathrooms and fully equipped kitchenettes (gas cooking). Linen and towels provided, but not beach towels. The ground floor has a secluded private patio; the first floor apartment has a spacious terrace with views; both have charcoal barbecues. We, the owners will be here to meet you and be of assistence. The village is still rural, unspoilt, romantic. The church clock tolls the hour. There is no through traffic: for one thing, the streets are too narrow; for another, vineyards and terraced olive groves begin on the outskirts and peaceful walks (ambles to rambles) lead towards the mountains. Yet the beaches - and there are plenty of them -are only 20 minutes away by car and range from long stretches of sand, with safe bathing and full amenities, to isolated rocky coves and perfect seclusion. The climate is dry, sunny. Mar to Oct

The village is located between the high peaks of the Pyrenees and the broad fertile plain of Empordá, which borders the extensive, thinlyy-populated sandy beaches of the Gulf of Roses (20 mins by car). It is a region that is less developed than the coast further south and still offers endless possibilities for exploration, ranging from the Teatre-Museu Dalí in nearby Figueres, with its comprehenisve exhibition of the surrealist painter's work (1904-1989), to the historic city of Girona with its cafés, bars, restaurants and fashionable shops in ancient, arcaded streets; to the art-centre, fishing village of Cadaques (where Picsso painted) and to the Cap de Creus National Park with its rocky coves, wild scenery and acres of wild flowers. Short excursions lead to castles, monastries, outstanding Greek and Roman remains, art galleries, village fiestas, wine cooperatives, museums, delicatessen and the wetlands bird sanctuary at Aiguamolls - to mention only a few

Further details for this vacation apartment rental in Figueres area, Spain

Beaches: Our region has little in common with the congested, package holiday resorts further south. Our beaches are legion and not so crowded. Twenty minutes from our village, the small fishing port-yacht marina of Llançá is flanked by small sandy beaches with safe bathing and all the usual amenities: parking, showers, cafés, tapas bars and shops. Further north, more secluded, more romantic beaches can be found - even a nudist beach. In the nearby town of Roses (20 mins) there are extensive sandy beaches with shallow water and safe bathing for children. Further south, three kms from the quiet town of San Pere de Pescador there are two or three kilometers of sandy beaches, so extenisive that even in August they are not crowded. In the Cap de Creus peninsular (30 to 40 mins by car), there are many secluded rocky coves, for many of which access is on foot. At the far end of the white-washed waterfront of El Port de la Selva there is rock bathing with parking and stairways down to the coves.

.Activities - enlarged on : Walking, cycling and mountain biking are available on our doorstep. The surrounding countryside, with cork oaks, umbrella pines, shrubs and wild flowers, is charming. At Llançá and Roses, both 20 mins by car, wind surfing, boat hire, snorkelling fishing trips, coastal boat excurions and diving are available. Every town has its weekly street market with an abundant display of local produce, fresh from the farms and orchards: local wines, locally made olive oil, honey, cheese, olives, dried fruit, herbs, spices, cured ham and sausages are on dislay at modest prices. Good places to stock up. Ten minutes away, the fortified town of Perelada has a summer music festival, is famous for cava (sparkling white wine - the twin of champagne), has a five-star 18 hole golf course and and in the grounds of the castle a thriving casino - don't all casinos thrive? Barcelona is two hours away by car - a full day excusion. For children - a turtle conservation farm (2 kms) with turtles big and small.

Salvador Dali: Teatre-Museu Dalí is situated in Figueres, just off the Ramblas and is immediately recognisable by the ramparts of the famous eggs on the roof and, by contrast, the sylph-like statuettes in gold. Salvador Dalí was born in Figueres in 1904, was a child prodigy and held his first public exhibition when he was 14. He later studied in Madrid and returned to Figueres in 1923, but subsequently split from his family and moved to the United States, from where he returned in 1948, not only famous but affluent. His work is complex and not easy to understand. It has been described as a reflection of his spiritual crises, his terrors, nightmares and obsessions. In 1960, he offered to set up a museum of his work and private collection of objects, to be funded by the state and donated to the town hall of Figueres. The theatre at that time was a burnt-out ruin. Dali worked tirelessly on the project for over a decade. He created a Dalinian world - which has endured. He died on 23 Januay 1989

Nice Country Apartment

Dan28 Manchester, England
Review Submitted: July 24, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
The village was picture perfect, but a car was essential. The apartment provided the perfect base for exploring the local area. The apartment was nice and clean and very well equipped, the owners who live in an apartment above were very helpful and informative. There are a few small steps between the main living area and the terrace/second bedroom which I would say make the apartment unsuitable for anyone with a disability or small children.

Overall is was the perfect retreat for a chilled out holiday.
Owner's Response: Dan,

We are so pleased that you enjoyed your holdiday here. That's what this lovely area is all about - peaceful enjoyment.

Irene & Linda, October 2008 & 2009

Review Submitted: November 4, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
Just returned from our 2nd visit to Rabos and have stayed in both the ground floor and first floor apartments, both with their own street level front door! You need to visit here to understand.....and I certainly recommend you book this place NOW!!!! Both have been excellent, beautifully furnished and equipped. Jack & Lella are the perfect hosts: friendly and welcoming on arrival, and at the end of our stay, so keen to know how we'd enjoyed ourselves and that all had been ok. This place is just fabulous!!
Rabos is surrounded by vineyards and is perfectly situated to visit the coast, surrounding mountains and trips to France. I'd recommend a trip to see the small town of Castilfollit de la Roca, which is not a long drive from Rabos on the N260 east from Figueres (perched on the very edge of a cliff!!) Good place for long Spanish lunch is La Roc restuarant (the menu del dia: 3 courses plus wine) on the main road into the town and overlooking the cliff!! Take a long rest afterwards! Also further on, is Oix. Very pretty and surrounded by mountains. Also recommend Besalu, a trip into France via the coastal road via Portbau and Corbere and on to Port Vendres. For ceramics: La Bisbal d'Emporda.
Rabos is also extremely handy for the beaches at Llanca & Port de la Selva. A favourite was Port Lligat and nearby Cadaques. Both are delightful and thankfully have not suffered from development as much of the rest of the Costa has. No high rises around here!! Truely unspoilt!! Wonderful.
Again, Rabos is great for exploring the main towns in the area. It's easy to get to Figueres and pick up a train to Girona (1/2 hour) and Barcelona (1hour). (Free parking about 100 metres from station off John Lennon Street). Figueres is worth a visit too. Girona is a really great vist, especially to the old town walls and the Jewish Quarter, where there are great viewa along the River Onyar and good tapas bars running along the adjacent street.
Best bit for last. The accommodation. So nice to return at the end of a packed day to somewhere so peaceful, relaxing and unspoilt. Loved the floodlit church bell, local sounds, and smell of the bougainvillia and the other plants growing over the walls of the house. Really charming, beautiful place. It's an absolute credit to Jack & Lella. Rabos also has a good restaurant and an arts centre/tapas restaurant (great staff).
Jack and Lella........all I can say is thanks again and can't wait til out 3rd visit next year! See you then!! Linda :)
Owner's Response: Thank you Irene and Linda from Argyll in Scotland. My wife, Lella, and I are so pleased that you both got so much pleasure and interest from both of your stays with us - last year and this year. It is great for us when people find so much to do and see in our peaceful unspoilt part of Spain, close to the Pyrenees.

To those who haven't yet come to see us, please read the review of these two girls from Scotland. Take note of their enthusiasm. Come and see us while the area, so close to the sea (Llançá has ten beaches) is still so unspoilt, so romantic. As Linda says, "No high rises around here..."

Next year in October will be their third visit to us in Rabós, Figueres area, Catalonia - it is already booked.

We welcome anybody who is looking for a get-away-from-it-all, holiday amidst olive groves and vineyards with sandy beaches just 15 minutes away.

Thanks again Irene and Linda. We are going to try the restaurant you recommended in Castellfollit..

Simply Charming

Frank and Margaret Preston U.K.
Review Submitted: March 20, 2009 Date of Stay: March 2009
This was our second visit to this delightful apartment and hopefully not the last. This attractive old stone built house is a world away from the concrete blocks of so many coastal areas and yet you are within easy reach of the sea. At Port de la Selva it is especially pleasant to sit by the sea with a coffee. The country villages around,e.g. Macanet de Cabrenys and Cistella are stunning and unspoilt and filled with flowers.
Within yards of the house is a well stocked shop run by a very nice young woman and the interesting town of Figueres is a short drive away.It is possible to go to Girona or even Barcelona by frequent train from Figueres.Rabos itself is quiet but full of nooks and crannies and there is a river to walk by.
If you are interested in antiques and/or pottery go further afield to La Bisbal d'Emporda on the way through the country to Palamos.
The apartment itself is well-appointed,cheerful and spotlessly clean and there is a terrace for outside dining etc. However, it is Jack and Lella who make this such a welcoming place with exactly the right balance of being friendly and on hand but never intrusive.Well worth recommending.
Owner's Response: Thank you, Margaret,

I am so pleased - but not altogether surprised - that you found so much pleasure in our area. And thank you for passing on the message in your review.
Our aim is that everybody who comes to stay with us finds as much enjoyment and pleasure as you have done.

Just Beautiful!

J&S, R&C Bristol
Review Submitted: February 27, 2008 Date of Stay: February 2008
Rustic, charming & quietly enchanting with outstanding views over sleepy village & valley .... awoke to sounds of churchbells, birds & sheep however hop in the car & within 20 mins, you find beaches, dramatic rocky headlands, bustling market towns, smart restarants, cafes and shops ..... had a wonderful time.
Owner's Response: It is very kind of Julie and Steve to write this warm and spontaneous appreciaion of their holiday in one of our sel-catering apartments in the village of Rabós in the Pyrenees. My wife and I are immensely pleased: this is what we are striving for: we do everything we can to ensure that our guests enjoy the village surrounded by vineyards, the nearby beaches, the rugged coast and bustling market towns. This is the real Spain, not the Costas.
