Figueres area Apartment Rental Photos and Description

First floor apt sleeps 4 (max 5) , Ground floor apt sleeps 4 (max 5)

Two self-catering, fully independent apartments in the Catalan village of Rabós, tastefully converted with cottage-style bedrooms, comfortable beds, modern bathrooms and fully equipped kitchenettes (gas cooking). Linen and towels provided, but not beach towels.

The ground floor has a secluded private patio; the first floor apartment has a spacious terrace with views; both have charcoal barbecues.

We, the owners will be here to meet you and be of assistence.

The village is still rural, unspoilt, romantic. The church clock tolls the hour. There is no through traffic: for one thing, the streets are far too narrow; for another, vineyards and terraced olive groves begin on the outskirts and peaceful walks (ambles to rambles) lead towards the mountains. Yet the beaches - and there are plenty of them - are only 20 minutes away by car and range from long stretches of sand, with safe bathing and full amenities, to isolated rocky coves and perfect seclusion. The climate is dry, sunny. March to November.

Beaches: Our region has little in common with the congested, package holiday resorts further south. Our beaches are legion and not so crowded. Twenty minutes from our village, the small fishing port-yacht marina of Llançá is flanked by small sandy beaches with safe bathing and all the usual amenities: parking, showers, cafés, tapas bars and shops. Further north, more secluded, more romantic beaches can be found - even a nudist beach.

In the nearby town of Roses (20 mins) there are extensive sandy beaches with shallow water and safe bathing for children. Further south, three kms from the quiet town of San Pere de Pescador there are two or three kilometers of sandy beaches, so extenisive that even in August they are not crowded. In the Cap de Creus peninsular (30 to 40 mins by car), there are many secluded rocky coves, for many of which access is on foot. At the far end of the white-washed waterfront of El Port de la Selva there is rock bathing with parking and stairways down to the coves.

.Activities - enlarged on : Walking, cycling and mountain biking are available on our doorstep. The surrounding countryside, with cork oaks, umbrella pines, shrubs and wild flowers, is charming. At Llançá and Roses, both 20 mins by car, wind surfing, boat hire, snorkelling fishing trips, coastal boat excurions, kayaking and diving are available.

Every town has its weekly street market with an abundant display of local produce, fresh from the farms and orchards: local wines, locally made olive oil, honey, cheese, olives, dried fruit, herbs, spices, cured ham and sausages are on dislay at modest prices. Good places to stock up.

Ten minutes away, the fortified town of Perelada has a summer music festival, is famous for cava (sparkling white wine - the twin of champagne), has a five-star 18 hole golf course and and in the grounds of the castle a thriving casino - don't all casinos thrive?

Barcelona is two hours away by car - a full day excusion.

For children - a turtle conservation farm (2 kms) with turtles big and small.

Salvador Dali: Teatre-Museu Dalí is situated in Figueres, just off the Ramblas and is immediately recognisable by the ramparts of the famous eggs on the roof and, by contrast, the sylph-like statuettes in gold.

Salvador Dalí was born in Figueres in 1904, was a child prodigy and held his first public exhibition when he was 14. He later studied in Madrid and returned to Figueres in 1923, but subsequently split from his family and moved to the United States, from where he returned in 1948, not only famous but affluent.

His work is complex and not easy to understand. It has been described as a reflection of his spiritual torments and obsessions.

In 1960, he offered to set up a museum of his work and private collection of objects, to be funded by the state and donated to the town hall of Figueres. The theatre at that time was a burnt-out ruin. Dali worked tirelessly on the project for over a decade. He created a Dalinian world - which has endured and bought prosperity to the region.

He died on 23 Januay 1989

Nice Country Apartment

  • 4 of 5

The village was picture perfect, but a car was essential. The apartment provided the perfect base for exploring the local area. The apartment was nice and clean and very well equipped, the owners who live in an apartment above were very helpful and informative. There are a few small steps between the main living area and the terrace/second bedroom which I would say make the apartment unsuitable for anyone with a disability or small children.

Overall is was the perfect retreat for a chilled out holiday.

Lovely relaxing break

  • 5 of 5

If you want to return after a days exploring to a lovely unspoilt village but with a friendly bar / restaurant within walking distance this is the ideal place. The apartment is fabulous with 2 equally nice bedrooms to choose from, a gorgeous bathroom and of course the all important terrace. The location is a joy for exploring - walking for a couple of minutes through the village streets takes you to a river (look for the turtles) and then into vineyards with trails marked out. You need a car to make the most of the location - right on the edge of a national park and a short drive to the sea. There are so many choices of beaches - from family friendly built up towns with all facilities to fishing ports and secluded coves. We had a great time and were made to feel very welcome. The only thing to add is bring some insect repellant or a mosquito net so you can make the most of sleeping with the doors open to be woken by the birdsong. Its a lovely place and we hope to return soon.

Perfect Catalonian retreat and perfect hosts

  • 5 of 5

We did quite a bit of research on this north eastern corner of Catalonia and basically spent nearly a month in the area, one week of which was spent in Jack and Lella's little place in Rabos. The village is very small and, apart from the church bells (which add to the wonderful atmosphere), very, very peaceful. There is a small restaurant (Can Tomas) where the staff are very friendly, in the warmer months there is Denise, a lovely Swiss lady, who offers rides through the Catalonian countryside on her beautiful family of friendly donkeys, there is a small supermarket open most mornings and a lovely little river. The views are spectacular, the atmosphere so tranquil and our hosts, Jack and Lella, so helpful yet unobtrusive, that we could not have asked for more ... except a much longer stay! If I had to offer one small criticism, I couldn't. Everything was wonderful and the little apartment we stayed in is even better than the pictures suggest. Thank you Jack and Lella and I hope we can return one day and next time stay a little longer.

Owner's Response: My reply to this review is specifically addressed to anyone trying to decide whether to choose our village, our quiet corner of northeast Catalonia, for their holiday or not. It is one of the best reviews we have ever had, because it describes our village and its ancient ways, our unsploilt countryside and nearby mountains - all very peaceful. It even brings in Denise and her donkeys and their treks into the hills. The only small setback is that in the hot summer days our river almost dries up, but within 20 mins by car there are fourteen small beeches to choose from - Jonathon forgot to mention these. In short, it is a review which puts the right people for this area on the right track. Both Lella and myself warmly thank Jonathan

3rd trip Irene & Linda

  • 5 of 5

Spent another great week at Jack & Lella's apartment in Rabos. It's ideal for both staying and touring around this beautiful corner of Catalunya. Stayed here twice previously & Jack & Lella's apartment now feels like "home from home". It's so relaxing and unspoilt. Been depressed since returning home!! The apartments are really, really comfortable, clean and very well looked after. Jack & Lella are perfect hosts: welcoming & friendly, yet unobtrusive. They've got it down to a fine art!!

See our earlier review (October 2008 & 2009 above) for more info on how Rabos is ideally located near to the beautiful coastline of north Costa Brava, the surrounding mountains & trips into France. I also recommended a quite a few trips in this earlier review......

This year, we explored a few more beaches around Llanca (there are 10!)...many of which are quiet and unspoilt. Again, the coastal road to France via Portbau was a lovely drive.

Ceret (France) is worth a visit (especially on the market day) and should it rain (unlikely!!).....go to the Caves of Serinya (Besalu area on the C66); Figueres, Girona Old Town; La Bisbal; the Toy Museum at Sant Feliu; Dali Museum at Figueres; Banyoles Lake, etc. I also believe there will be a new upgraded superfast train service from Barcelona via Figueres and on to Perpignan & beyond from December 2010, which should allow even more scope for tours from this wonderful area. Other "musts" are Camprodon Valley, Cap de Creus, Massif Pedraforca, Bergueda. The list of things to see & do around the Rabos area is endless!

So......what can I say? 4th trip booked!!

Lella.....say "Hi" to the donkeys and Mooska the neighbours beautiful cat. See you October. x

Owner's Response: It is very very satisfying for us (Lella and myself) to learn of the enormous enjoyment that Irene and Linda have discovered in this particular, unspoilt corner of Spain - the NE corner of Catalonia, on the border with France. Our apartments in the tiny village of Rabós, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, seem to have become almost their second home. This gives us even greater satisfaction. The region is still relatively undiscovered, though travellers in search of holidays in peaceful surroundings, near the sea, on a magically unspoilt Mediterranean beaches, are now beginnning to find their way here. We welcome them. We only have one small quibble with Irene and Linda's review: Llançá (pronounced Llansa) doesn't have ten beaches (within 15 to 20 mins of our village) - it has 15! And it is true: they are quiet and unspoilt - even in summer. Magical. Thank you both for your lovely review. See you next year. Jack and Lella

Perfect place for a peaceful vacation!

  • 5 of 5

I cannot add much to the previous excellent reviews except to say that they fully reflect my experience while staying in Rabos with Jack and Lella. The village was quiet and charming, the house was old and picturesque, the apartment was fully equipped, perfectly maintained and just beautiful to the minutest detail.

My wife Julia and I were on a honeymoon in Catalonia, and Rabos was for us a relief after a week in Barcelona. It served as a base, from which we explored this beautiful region, and it couldn't have been better. Staying "at arm's length" from the touristic coastal resorts, not being tied to one hotel, one (very likely) crowded beach, seeing as much as we can, resting on our own in solitary coves, enjoying time with each other - that's what we wanted, and that's what it was. Just perfect! Many thanks to Jack and Lella!

Great place, lovely rural location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for two weeks in August 2010 and had a marvellous break. The apartment is hidden away up a narrow alley and the terrace offers wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. Jack and Lella couldn't have done more to make us feel welcome and help us explore this beautiful part of Spain.

I travelled with my wife and two boys aged 10 and 11 and it was everything we hoped it would be. We all agreed that this was one of best holidays for years and are looking forward to going back one day. There are so many beaches to choose from as well as Figueres, Barcelona and the amazing Cadaques to visit.

If you are looking for a busy, bustling place with bars and restaurants at the end of the road then this is not the place for you (although there is plenty of life around if you drive 15 minutes to Roses).

Owner's Response: Steve's review is very welcome. Every time we receive a review like this, we feel we have had a success - scored a bull's-eye. Our aim is that people don't just have an ordinary holiday here, in this wonderful corner of Spain, but that they have the holiday of a lifetime, an unforgetable holiday. And that is exactly what Steve says he has had. Which pleases us enormously.

The village is located between the high peaks of the Pyrenees and the broad fertile plain of Empordá, which borders the extensive, thinly-populated sandy beaches of the Gulf of Roses (20 mins by car).

It is a region that is less developed than the coast further south and still offers endless possibilities for exploration, ranging from the Teatre-Museu Dalí in nearby Figueres, with its comprehenisve exhibition of the surrealist painter's work (1904-1989), to the historic city of Girona with its cafés, bars, restaurants and fashionable shops in ancient, arcaded streets; to the art-centre, fishing village of Cadaques (where Picsso painted) and to the Cap de Creus National Park with its rocky coves, wild scenery and acres of wild flowers. Short excursions lead to castles, monastries, outstanding Greek and Roman remains, art galleries, village fiestas, wine cooperatives, museums, delicatessen and the wetlands bird sanctuary at Aiguamolls - to mention only a few!

The spring is sunny and peaceful - the summer crowds have not arrived, the beaches are uncrowded and the queues for the Salvador Dali museum are shorter or non-existent. Villages have cheese festivals, olive oil festivals and wine festivals.

Other Activities: Main activity here is relaxing!
