Located in some of California's most rugged and breathtaking scenery, the cabin is situated 650 feet above the Big Sur coastline (Gorda-Lucia area) overlooking Highway One. Guests can enjoy a fifty-mile panoramic view from Cape San Martin to Point Sur. The cabin overlooks Jade Cove where some of the worlds most exquisite jade has been found and is celebrated in the nearby annual Jade Festival each October.
While the cabin is ideal for a romantic getaway or spirit renewing retreat, it is also located close to multiple outdoor activities. If you choose an ACTIVE vacation, Sand Dollar Beach is 5 minutes away where beach combing, surfing and picnicking are available. Numerous hiking opportunities abound in the adjoining Los Padres National Forest. Within an hour's drive or less, one can visit The Hermitage, Nepenthe, Elephant Seal Beach, Esalen Institute, Big Sur Village, Julia Pfieffer, Andrew Molera and Limekiln State Parks to mention a few highlights.
Tour world famous Hearst Castle then spend the day shopping for that special art piece in charming Cambria. In less than an hour and a half drive you can visit Mission San Antonio or enjoy wine tasting in Paso Robles wine country.
If you prefer a more RELAXED vacation, enjoy the expansive view of the ever-changing Pacific from either of two decks. Catch a glimpse of Grey or Humpback whales, dolphins, flocks of wild pigeons, boats, or perhaps a hang-glider before he lands.
Catch some rays on the built-in sun bench or take a dip in the hot tub while watching awesome sunsets. While soaking in the hot tub, listen to the surf and sea lions below. Wildlife is as close as the gardens. Big Sur Coast Cabin is a certified Backyard Wildlife Habitat site.
Relax on the sectional and bird watch through the windows for local favorites at the feeders. If you are very lucky, you might see a magnificent California Condor at eyeball-to-eyeball level. And when total darkness decends, sit on the deck and watch the Milky Way appear with no city lights to compete.
Chefs can try their skills on the outdoor kitchen/patio stainless steel grill and side burner. Enjoy the 6 person luxury glider swing.
Still too active? Relax, do nothing but enjoy being here. Satellite TV ( flat screen High Definition) ensures that no one has to miss their favorite TV programs. You may wish to bring your favorite DVD's or use the cabin's library to enjoy with that favorite novel. Forget that novel? Find a new author from the small in-house library.
Our caretaker Gail is close by (on site, out of sight) to ensure a smooth stay. She is well versed in the local flora, fauna, and the nearby area and should be able to help you with any questions you may have.
Come enjoy the new hardwood floors, carpeting, window coverings and new large propane refrigerator. No pets, please.
Big Sur Coast Cabin is pleased to now offer high speed internet and Wifi connections.
Almost 50 years ago my father had the foresight and ambition to 'build himself a cabin'. Introduced to this area by his father before him, who searched for gold in the nearby Los Burros mining area, he grew up with a love of the California coast and in particular, the Big Sur area. With virtually no services available and only a vision of the site he choose, he started his cabin. From building the road, clearing the site, hauling lumber and supplies, framing, etc.,he brought his vision of a coast cabin to reality.
For many years, the house, simply known as 'the coast cabin' by family and friends, has been a favorite getaway and meeting place. Not only has it served as a place for fun and laughter but as a retreat for those who need time spent in quiet reflection. The cabin with its unique setting and stunning views offers a respite in todays hurried world. The memories made are as varied as the guests who have been there. We, as family, know we are truly blessed to have this treasure and we share the cabin with you.
The cabin was a magical place to spend alone time with the one you love. It was so good to feel as though we were in our own home yet so far away that we could relax and enjoy each other in the beautiful surroundings.
We will be back again and again to enjoy your magnificent cabin.
Thank you for the ease of the transaction as well.
Wow, what a breathtaking place. The views were unbelievable. Big Sur is beautiful and this place allows you to experience the best of that beauty even while staying in the cabin. Every room had amazing view and a lot of personality. We enjoyed the hot tub, and the deck. At night, we saw about 4 shooting stars in an hour while sitting outside - Just amazing. The place was perfect and you can clearly tell the level of detail and thought behind the entire cabin. Also, the host make you feel at home. Thanks again for sharing your wonderful gem with us. Highly recommended. I have stayed in other cabins in Big Sur, and this was by far the best. By the way, I proposed here - and she said yes. Thanks again, we will definitely be back. - S & C
I agree with all of the reviews previously. We were there for a long weekend, wish it could have been more. Each morning the marine layer covered the view, but we went hiking above or below the cabin. The layer generally cleared off in time to enjoy the afternoon. The night sky was superb! We saw lots of shooting stars. We had driven south from Santa Cruz on 1, so we did spend one day going south to San Simenon and stopping liberally. Really enjoyed seeing the elephant seals! I had no idea they were so big! Humpbacks were migrating and coming in close to catch anchovies. While we were there we visited Jade Beach, Sand Dollar Beach all very, very close to the cabin! Easy walk to Sand Dollar Beach. The cabin was very comfortable. The towels and linens fabulous. We enjoyed the outdoor kitchen and the hot tub. The cabin is off the grid, but has all of the facilities we are used to. We are active and it was perfect for us, so much to do outside and nature wise nearby....but home base was soothing it begged you to stay! Both the owner and care taker were very helpful. As the owners directions state, be sure you get groceries before you get there!I would love to go back!
The pictures and descriptions are accurate but the view is better and has to be seen in person. The house is so comfortable. The kitchen was great. The wi-fi worked very well, once we turned it on :-)
The garden is beautiful. The hot tub was good!
The towels are better than 5 star hotels.
Can't wait to go back.
Oh my god what an amazing view! This cabin is a perfect for a couples weekend getaway. We spent almost our entire trip sitting in the hot tub overlooking the coast line and off into the ocean, it's really amazing. If you're looking for a nice quiet place to enjoy nature, this is a great place for you.
We have rented many cabins in the Big Sur area over the years and this is the best by far! The ocean views are spectacular and the cabin is tastefully decorated and contains all the comforts of home. We found the beds to be very comfy, which unfortunately is something that is often lacking in many similar accomodations. We especially enjoyed stretching out on the deck in front of the full expanse of the ocean while being entertained by the antics of dozens of hummingbirds zipping through the flower garden. We also made good use of the outdoor kitchen and the professional style range in the kitchen. Our communication with the owner was very pleasant. She called to ensure that we arrived safely and had everything that we needed. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful family treasure with us! We will definitely be back!
Nice spot for the four of us girls to have a relaxed, scenic weekend. Accommodations were comfortable and it was easy for us to prepare dinner in the fully stocked kitchen. Only downsides were the far drive from SF (which we knew going into it) and the fact that it's way up on a steep hill so not easy for the people in our group who were runners to take a spin. Loved sitting and watching the sunset with our glasses of wine!
Picnicking, Birding, Tide-pooling, Hang-gliding, Photography Opportunities. Two restaurants nearby, third one is 9 miles north and fourth one is 14 miles south. Wonderful opportunity to hunt for jade at Jade Cove and San Dollar Beach.
